Go to a medical supply store and they have these plastic boots that you can wear over your leg that allows you to shower or bath and the foot stays BONE DRY. These saved my life after my hammertoe surgery because I take a bath everyday - not shower.
how are you doing now?
I had hammer toe surgery on my right foot 10 days ago. I have to say it has been the most painful thing I have ever experienced in my life. I am 44 years old, am an athletic guy, have played sports and broken almost every bone at some point. The pain from this surgery has been off the charts.
I was given Tylenol 3's for home and had to take 3 every 3-4 hours just to take the edge off.
After 3 days without sleep, and the doctor's office closed for the weekend, my wife finally reached them and asked for a prescription for a stronger painkiller. He prescribed "Percocet".
In two days in see the doctor to have the bandages removed and I finally get to speak face to face with the doctor. His office had advised my wife that if the pain was excruciating, -just go to the hospital emergency. Well, here in Canada, that could mean a 7hour wait before being seen...while in EXCRUCIATING pain! Not doing it.
I've pretty much only hobbled from the bed to the bathroom on my crutches, but am hoping that after we get the bandages off and see what's going on..I'll get to start moving around more. The pain is the controlling factor.
I'm not the kind of guy to sit around, so when I say that this operation has kicked my butt....heed my words.
I had been told prior to surgery , that it was "just toes..." , so it would be an easy recovery. Not true.
So far it's been hell and I am supposed to have my left foot done next.
Nope.
i understand i had hammertoe surgery dec 15, 2012 and it has been four months i had four toes done and i still have swelling and pain very bad pain i have therapy twice a week. i was out of work for 3 months and now working half days.. had 3 rods in 3 toes for 2 weeks. I am still wearing a boot up to my knee. this is awful I hope no one will go through what i am going through. she ordered a MRI it found nothing abnormal. I understand what you are going through. debbie
I had hammertoe surgery Nov. 13 2011 and am still in pain. They cut the bone, put a pin in, but the bone did not knit and it needs to form scar tissue instead. I had this surgery many years ago with no problems, but this time is bad. Now I think it is from what they call induration as I have an incredibly hard lump on the top which burns and is painful and the skin is raw. The toe is still swollen and red.
What kind of therapy are you doing? My doc just said wait another 5 months. I started acupuncture on the toe 1x/wk and after 3 times I am starting to notice a difference. I do towel crunches since I could bend, maybe a month and a half. What else to they recommmend?

I see the surgeon for the first time since my operation tomorrow a.m.
I will update after I speak with him and they remove the bandages.
Took 4, yes 4! Percocet over the night to overcome pain to sleep. Not good.
For the record, I never take pain killers. I've played competitive sports my whole life and have ad many surgeries and injuries.....nothing like this though.
I'm almost embarassed at how bad it is...TWO TOES!!! Sheesh.

I had a hammertoe and bunion surgery on 1/6/2012; yes, the pain is bad. But, my doctor put me on vicoden and it did help. I didn't walk well for over 5 weeks, but am doing well now. The only problem I have now is a metal rod is coming out of the big toe therefore I have to have it removed.
Yes, I would never have this done again. And I am developing one on the other foot. The recovery is long, painful and very inconvenient. But as of this date 4/10, I can say I can walk and am doing much better.

Saw the surgeon yesterday a.m. The pain removing the bandages was so bad that I was screaming and almost past out. They had difficulty removing the bandages and the assistant said that they were on very tight.
When finally all were cut off, there was silence. The surgeon looked at my 3rd toe and said " I'm not happy with the way this looks.." His next words were:' You may lose this toe."
My toe was completely black. It was so painful that they could not remove any stitches from anywhere on my foot...and there are ALOT. The assistant suggested they give me another week to see if it gets better with a new dressing.
I'm home and my foot is swollen. The pain isn't as bad as yesterday...but all I can think about it losing the toe and possibly my foot...as the 4th and 5 th are half black.
It felt like the bandages were so tight this past week, but how do you know what it's supposed to feel like? And you trust your surgeon.
My wife and I are monitoring the pain and if the foot continues to change color...straight to emergency.

sept. 2011 i had a very good surgeon,NYC. <Dr. Barfeld. I took vicodin 2x a day for 7 days and then 1x at 11pm and then one motrin at 11 pm only for4 months. , and limitrd walking for 30 days, I used a scooter in target, and costco for the first two months and wore big wide sneakers. after 3 months i was more confortable but used ice compresses and could not step on recycled boxes even ater 6 months.. it takes about 7 to 12 months to really loose the swelling.. however i did have to do the operation because I had swelling and pain in my feet and now i feel better. I used 1 crutch the first 1o days afer the operation on my right foot and did the second foot after 5 weeks. ok but i feel better now after 7 months. Also limit your salt,as it causes further swelling. GOOD LUCK11
Yes, going on 5 weeks after surgery still in a boot and the toe feels like it is limp dead, extremely painful first 2 weeks
Attended Emergency on Sat. Doctor says I will lose 3rd toe due to Dry Gangrene. I am now on Morphine for the pain.
Saw my surgeon on Monday, and he says he thinks the toe will survive. Sent me home til Wed.
Saw surgeon at hospital yesterday where they removed all sutures and cleaned wounds. Pain was horrible. Had an allergic reaction to the Morphine so I am back on Percocet. Redressed wounds as they are now draining but have a small amount of color. Have now been prescribed super antibiotics and am hoping that it kills whatever infection is in the toes/foot. Casting guy said it's good that it's draining so I may save my toes...he said to envision blood going into the toes and stay positive.
I'm to return to hospital in a week April 25th. It's been a nightmare..I just want it over.

It is awful . I am in my eight week of recovery. I go to physical therapy twice a week and do exercises six times per day . The pain is getting better but the swelling is not. I had two hammer toes next to my big toe. My other foot will need the same surgery but I will wait a few more years .Best wishes to you .
Im 56 and my experience has been much like yours . A nightmare. My pins were bent also. I fell in the office one week after surgery . I had two bunions and two hammertoes. The bunions healed fine . The swelling and pain in the hammer toes goes on and on . I was going to have my other foot done next year but not now ! I will put it off for a long while .I am eight weeks post op and in physical therapy.
Update: Attended hospital April 25th. at casting clinic. with surgeon.
Dressing was removed and 3rd toe is worse. Large part of toe came off with dressing. Skin was removed from both toes- extremely painful procedure[debridement].
Doctor says 3rd toe will probably require amputation. Prescribed another 14 days of Cephalex and redressed the wound .
Have to return May 9th for pin removal. Final decision on amputation will be done at that time.
Unfortunately in Canada, we can't sue. Go in for a routine operation...lose your toes.
Supposed to have left foot done and also rotator cuff surgery....think I'll EVER let another surgeon touch me??!
