I am going into my 2nd year since hammertoe surgery on just one toe. I still can't wear closed in shoes. It's a good think I live in Florida because I wear sandals or flip flops all of the time. I wish I had never had it done.
I had one toe all joints removed and pin insurted (next to big toe R foot). Very little pain, but no showers or driving or extensive walking for 4 weeks. Pin removal in two days. How muich recovery time is normal after Pin removal? Thanks in advance for your reply

I developed lympedema . It has been a nightmare. I live in Panama city Fl. I need surgery soon on my other foot but I wont do it now because of this .
Hi I had stiches removed and was told I could bath straight away I did made scar look a little better also it had a little like red orangey liquid coming through and stayed on the line of the scar any advice I am scared of infection
I soak my foot ina warm salt water bath for an hour every night or I use Epson Salts and it keeps the infection away and allows the dead skin to slough off. Try it.
I had nine toes operated on at one time. To take a shower, my husband would take two rubber/vinyl gloves that they use in the nursing home or hospitals and put them on my feet. Wrap duct tape around them and take all the showers you want. It's wonderful.
Hi Erin
Your foot op experience posted over a year ago sounds v similar to my friend's current experience altho she's much older than you. All this time later can you say how things progressed re the swelling and anything that works to help reduce it. My friend is normally v active and now v frustrated and getting depressed. Its 4 months since the op and her foot is v swollen and cannot wear any kind of shoe. Surgeon says shouldn't still be swollen. But that's it. Having physio but no visible change.
Anything you can say to help?

I had bunions removed from each foot (one year apart) a decade ago...it was a life changing experience....I dropped a shoe size, I was finally pain free and could enjoy life. Recently I had both feet operated on together to remove hammer toes. It is tough going but if you are prepared to leave some dignity at the door and if you have someone to take care of you and the house for the first week or two and if you want to get things over and done with at once, then it's OK'ish. There are pros and cons to each choice. Bunions done at the same time is a hard recovery but I wasn't prepared to sacrifice another two summers, so I just did it all together this time around. It's a personal choice.
The first week or two post surgery is hard going with the pain and boring too as you should be mostly on bed rest with the feet elevated. The following 4 weeks are OK as you start to apply more weight to the feet. The cast comes off and it certainly feels strange to walk again. The recovery doesn't end here though. Realistically, it takes a good few months for everything to really settle down.
Do not compromise with your feet (they carry your entire body weight) and make sure you get the very best surgeon...I have seen some awful jobs done to people that my own surgeon had to fix. I lived with horrendous pain for years before I had my first two operations and I am so thrilled with the results. I have stuck like glue to the post operative care I was given, including certain lifestyle changes: no high impact sports, no stilettos, no pointy shoes....flat wide fitting shoes as much as possible and heels are no more than a two inch block. I make an exception a couple of times a year for weddings etc. Longterm aftercare and lifestyle changes are crucial...I am still active and fit and healthy in spite of activity changes.
Some physio post surgery is wise but not a whole lot is required.
I had hammertoe surgery about 5 years ago and am doing it for a second toe in a couple of weeks. Had no trouble with it...wore a tennis shoe for about 6 weeks, but stayed off of it for most of 2 weeks and then went back to (fairly) normal life. Did you have pins to keep the toe straight?
Hello, i am due to have the same operation in two weeks time and would like to know how long you were unable to drive for. I do alot of spinning in the gym and cycle on weekends, how soon will i be able to return to these activities?

Hi, it is September 2012.... so dont kknow if you have had your surgery or are well and truly recovered by now.... but I'd like to tell my story.
I had R.foot done 2 and 1/2 months ago. I had a hyprocure (stent to realign foot structure) inserted. Also 3 toes straightened (hammertoes). My big toe straightened (wedge of bone removed and then straightened). My surgeon USED NO PINS, SCREWS OR WIRES.
It was all done with Splints (bandages). then a post op boot.
There is some swelling still, but pain after couple of weeks minimal.
ALl controlled with pain killers and anti inflammatory drugs.
Walked on it straight away (as the boot protects the foot).
ADVICE TO ANYONE CONSDIERING THIS SURGERY: RESEARCH!!! FIND A SURGEON WHO DOES MINIMAL INVASIVE SURGERY (KEYHOLE SURGERY) I HAVE NO SCARS!!
AND ALSO WHO DOES NOT USE WIRES, PINS OR SCREWS!!!
THIS IS THE NEWEST TECHNIQUE, AND A LOT OF DOCTORS ARE STILL DOING THE OLD METHOD. I KNOW AS I SHOPPED AROUND.

I had my surgery yesterday May 7, 2010. I had left foot (toes 2, 3, 4, and 5 done with pins. pinky toe didnt need a pin so bone was removed and stiched) So far,so good. Still no pain. I was scared because of all the horror stories as well as I know 2 people that got it done last week. I keep my foot elevated with ice. The numbness has worn off for the most part.

It's now October 2012. My 5th right toe is still fat full of scar tissue and hurt like ....I still can't wear a close fitting shoe. I have a doctor appointment next month. I don't know what I'm going to. Naturally in the summer months I can wear open toes shoes but here comes another fall and winter. I'm constantly on the Internet trying to find remedies for breaking up scar tissues but having no luck. Can anyone offer advice other than what I'm hearing "find another podiatrist". I don't think at this point another one couldn't help because the damage is done. I'm open for suggestions.
If needed, it is advised...painful or not. Foot can deteriorate with age, and problems get worse!
I had hammertoe surgery July 17, 2012 with 4 Smarttoe impants and staples put in my big toe. The surgery was not fun but I had very little pain. I really did what the doctor said, keeping it elevated and iced and staying off it. I was out of work for 7 full weeks, worked only half days for the next 3 weeks and went back full time Oct. 1. Still have some swelling and some minor pain but not much when I walk a lot. I still ice and elevate. Looks much better and doctor said to give at least 6 months on the swelling. You really have to do what the doctor says by staying off your feet and icing and elevating. Good luck
