I had the surgery 2 years ago. No medicine afterwards. I passed fluid immediately following surgery which fits definition and they scooted me out the door. I could not urinate for 10 days, the pain was too intense. That evening I went into a different emergency room and got cathetered. Uncomfortable, but painless for the 10 days. Then I went in to get the stent removed, they removed the cath, numbed me, then went in and removed the stent. 45 minutes later I urinated without pain, peed all over the place, but no pain.

I just had surgery 1/13 and body rejected stent. Was ok in hospital then when I came home was a mess due to low grade fever and horrible pain! I had stent removed Tuesday and am now finally experiencing some relief. I have slept a lot the last 2 days and still tired but assume partially anemic due to passing a lot of blood in urine yet. For me this whole experience has been a nightmare but I know others bounces back and returned to work in a day.

I had two ureteroscopy done roughly 8 months ago for a stone that was over 1cm. I had a complication during the first surgery because I have a slight fold in my ureter and they were unable to get the scope into my kidney. So they placed a stent in the ureter to expand it and allow for a second attempt. Additionally after the first surgery I had a catheter that was removed in hospital and that was awful and caused very scary things to happen during my first urination which they push you to take immediately after removal. I was then sent home. I can tell you now that the pain from the temporary stent was truly amazing. I was in torture for about 12 hours post op. There was an immense amount of pressure in my body that would not let up even with pain medication. With much anguish, I was able to push through it and fell asleep. When I woke up the next day it was gone.

I then had the second surgery about 3 weeks later. They were able to break the stone and remove most of it (a 3mm section had broken away and was missed during the op so it's still in there). I then had a second temporary stent in place for about 4 days which I removed myself as it was attached to a length of medical grade thread which was left hanging out of my penis and taped to me. For those several days I was in discomfort when I was awake and when I was asleep I would wake up several times a night because when I got an erection during sleep this would cause pain in my penis that was quite bad. I called the urologist about this and he stated that sometimes that happens as the stent causes pressure to develop throughout your bladder and penis. I was worried there would be sexual complications, but there were no lasting effects. So, this was also not the most pleasant experience but compared to the first stent it was nothing and the pain passed very quickly.

It is now several months later, I am on U-crit to try and limit stone growth but I am having some discomfort over the past few days and I have a follow up scheduled for a scan and a visit with the urologist to see if anything has changed. I'm just lucky the discomfort has coincided with this follow-up otherwise I would likely had to call for an appointment. I can tell you that the surgery itself is not painful but the post operative procedures/effects can be both painful and somewhat unsettling or distressing. I personally have a level of PTSD about it and I am afraid to have the surgery again knowing exactly what I am in for. Luckily, I did not have massive amounts of bleeding or other issues that some have posted here. What I can tell you is that unless the next scan shows another large unpassable stone I will not be seeking another surgery I will attempt to control it and pass it on my own. This may seem crazy to some, but prior to these surgeries I had passed a 5mm stone on my own, which took about 6 hours in an ER, and in comparison to the temporary stent to enlarge my ureter, the catheter, and the second temp stent which I had to remove myself after the second operation the 5mm stone was nothing. Up to this surgery I believed myself to have a very high tolerance for pain, and I still believe I do as I did not immediately run back to the hospital during the first stent pain and instead rode it out. My wife says that after the surgery she was afraid I was dying, she had never seen me in such distress before and she's seen me injure myself in many ways including rupturing my Achilles and walking around on it until we got to a hospital. Frankly, and I don't tell her this, at the time of the first stent I sort of thought I might be dying too.

I am not telling this story to scare anyone away from the surgery if it is absolutely medically necessary because it does work, but instead to inform them of what it is really like. The doctors, rightfully so, use bedside manners and downplay the amount of pain you can experience. My urologist told me that the temporary stent after surgery 1 would "create some pressure". When I was at home thinking I was dying from pain his words kept ringing in my head "some pressure". If that's "some pressure" I'd hate to see what his description of pain is. What it taught me however is to advocate for myself. After the second surgery I demanded a higher dose of pain medication for home use as I was aware that the pain could be significant and almost unbearable. He seemed to balk at the idea at first (probably because doctors are afraid you may get addicted to the pain meds) but he eventually relented when I said I would not leave the hospital until this was done. Because of this the second stent was much more bearable. So, beware! Advocate for yourself. If you have a low pain threshold this surgery could really make a bad day or two for you. Just tell the doctor you will need adequate pain management post op to try and mitigate the situation. The other advice I can give you, and this seems counter-intuitive when you are in pain and such, is to drink as much water as possible. Yes this makes you urinate a lot and there's discomfort during urination, but it does clean out your kidney and any clots or debris from the surgery and eventually you get used to the pressure. I am certain that the amount of water I drank helped prevent further complications.

If I remember I will follow up this post with a reply about my most recent urology visit to let you know how it goes. I am praying that the discomfort I am feeling is merely the 3mm stone moving around and rubbing against something and not something more serious.

The only pain you will experience after surgery is begging of urination due to the stent in ureter.

There have been no changes in the stone left in my kidney, so the discomfort I was feeling may be either the stone moved slightly or some other issue in my back. I am quite relieved.

Seems quite a few people got lucky with the pain in here. First off, I had a 10mm stone lodged in my ureter below my kidney since December 14th 2016. On that day, i went to the emergency room because of testicular pain. They foudon't nothing and said it is probably a kidney stone and released me. Next morning, I called my urologist, and he suggested I go back to emergency and tell them to give me a CT scan. Then they found the stone. My urogist then scheduled a procedure to put a stent in my ureter. You see, I had to see another specialist to get it actually removed. So, to make a long story short, I have been pissing g blood and clots since December 14th 2016 to February 21st 2017 where I got it removed at UCSF. It took 2 days for me to go pee without pain, but am now pain free while peeing. BUT I am 3 days post op and my kidney area still hurt pretty good. Now this could be because I stopped the pain medication 2 days after surgery so I could pass a stool, but I am still in pain. It is getting better though. I was totally u Der for the surgery. My stone was blasted and then mostly evacuated out of the ureter.

I had my first kidney problem last June. I had been having UTI 's constantly one after the other and was put on several antibiotics. As I was over menoupause my oncologist (2 breast cancers a couple of years before) told me to try vagifem 2 times a week. That stopped the UTI 's. But I still had a lot of back pain, physical therapy wasn't working and I was sent to a spine doctor. I have protruding discs, sciatica and a little arthritis. Right after this both my husband and I got really sick, thought it was food poisoning or a stomach bug. He felt much better in 2 days but I got worse, to the point where I was acting like my Mom did when she had alzheimers. He took me up to urgent care and after they looked at me rushed ma to local hospital. I was sent right up to OR (I don't remember any of this) they tried to remove the largest kidney stone but there was all kinds of bacteria that was released into my body, I went into shock (sespsic) and my kidneys started failing. Next thing I knew I woke up in ICU where I stayed for 3 days, they moved me up to a regular room for 8 days. Still sick because the stones were still there. They sent me home with a pic line inserted into my arm so that I could give myself intrevenous antibiotics for 2 weeks. I eent back to the kidney specialist and was told I would need to go a specialist that only deals with stones. Saw her, afmitted me and again tried to remove the stones. Still too much infection in my body. I was sent home with a pic line for 10 more days
I was admitted again and this time it worked. Thai January my UTI s and back pain were back. I had 2 separate back injections but the pain is still there. Had another MRI and stone were back. Had surgery on Friday sent home same day. I am in agony this time. Last night I was awake all night in pain. Today feels like a really bad UTI, I am on antibiotics and other drugs. The drugs don't seem to help. I will go back to see the doctor in 2 weeks but she wants me to see an infectious disease doctor. Meanwhile my primary has me setup for an MRI and then wants me to see a spine doctor. Any advice????

I was in the same boat as you. I am jealous of all the people telling me the size of their stones as I had two that were over 2cm in size and two more that were over 1cm in size!!! Two of them were almost an inch in size!!! After the surgery I was stuck in the ER for another 5 days of pure unadulterated Hades. Afterwards I passed a blood clot that was as painful as a full blown kidney stone attack!!! Everytime I peed I had to bite on a towel so hard that my gums would bleed. It felt like someone was putting a barbed glowing hot rod in my penis everytime I peed for the first week. The amount of blood I peed was ungodly! Then came the removal of the stints... I had two of them. My half assed urologist told me it would take less than a minute to pull them both out. Well less than a minute turned into the worst 7 minutes of my life!!!! He lost grasp of both of them when he was pulling them out and they recoiled all the way to my kidneys. I was begging him to put me to sleep. He had to call both nurses to hold my legs because they were shaking uncontrollably from the pain. I never experienced a shaking/shiver of that magnitude in my life. It didn't help that he was getting nervous during the removal, as he had such a hard time grabbing them after they recoiled in the manner in which they did. It has been over two months since the surgery and I'm still passing stones till this day. I've counted over 100 small pieces, although about 4 of them were over 4cm. That gives you a reference to the size of them, as these stones are supposedly the residual left over pieces from the surgery. Oh yeah BTW, after the stints were pulled out make sure someone is near you when you have to pee for 24 hours after (or wear a helmet) because you may faint from the pain. Yeah it burns that bad. I hope no one here has to go through that, well.... Because.... It sucks!!!!
