Hi I had a tonsillectomy ten days ago and I have to say it was not all it's made out to be. To me I feared it would be way more painful than it actually was. My doctor prescribed me hydrocodone and amoxacillin, I also got acetaminofen with codeine over a weekend, which didn't help me at all. I reccommend anyone to take their meds on time every time! I slept sitting up every night (still am) and continuously drank water. I survived on lukewarm chicken broth, jello, applesauce, popsicles, gatorade, and water for the first five days. On day six I was brave enough to try some other foods (due to starvation!) I tried hard boiled eggs, (which were great and went down easy with a bottle of water) oatmeal, pudding, and even a hamburger patty. Here I am on day ten and starting on day seven I began feeling sharp stinging pains on the left back side of my throat. It feels like I am swallowing glass or there are tears/cuts/blisters where my tonsils used to be. This is way more painful than the actual surgery pain. My white scabs are almost completely gone (by the way they dissolve not fall off), and I am feeling as though I will never fully recover. It hurts when I drink water, try to eat popsicles or ice cream. My left ear and left side of my throat are worst when I wake up in the moring, and I have to get up take meds and lay back down. I called my doctor to ask about this new pain and was told to wait until my follow up to get it checked out :( .. four more days. I am wondering if anyone else who has had a tonsillectomy went through this or experienced any blistering. When will the pain stop? When will I be back to normal? Please say soon!! By the way I am twenty-three I have a two year old and am starting my second semester of college tomorrow, and I need advice from someone who has gone though this. HELP PLEASE!!
Taking your tonsils would be this painful, I can't see my scabs anymore.. I pray everyday that this pain would go away, but it doesn't:(.
I am 23 also. Reading this article is very accurate. I am on day 6 and on top of the operation I have been very sick between taking the hydrocodone on an empty stomach basically and having to go to the hospital twice. My ears are the big issue right now heading into week 1. I do not sleep at night because I feel like a have the worst possible ear aches. I have lost 10 pounds in just 6 days due to hardly being able to eat. The first 2 days I was like woah this is nothing like what the doctors said it would be. Boy was I WRONG!!! Between all the sickness and different phases of pain in between I do not recommend anyone ever getting this done unless they have to.
