I had a tonsillectomy a year ago. My soft palate seemed really low after the surgery, but it did get a bit higher over the period of a year. But still lower than it was before tonsillectomy. My sleep became horrible, so does my concentration and memory, shortness of breath during sports as well.

Until now I still don't know what to do with it. Trimming the soft palate may cause my voice to change. I do know some people who didn't have any voice change after. But I still get worried whether the hands of my surgeon will be good. Those confirmed good surgeon will charge a lot.

It makes me so sad to read this, my soft palate/uvula is pretty low and I am almost on 2 months post-op. My uvula is wider and leans to the right. It looks so strang and I can feel it 24/7. Did this feeling go away for you? I am so depressed and I've lost so much weight worrying about this. It has affected me so much mentally I can't even NOT think about it.

What do you mean by "trimming the soft palate"? Don't you mean your uvula? I really feel for all of you going through this. I am so mad at my Dr. for not telling me about these types of complications pre-op. I would never have done this If I knew, and I paid so MUCH money!!

My surgeon said that he noticed that I had a saggy uvula area, and that after my tonsils were removed it became even more saggy. So he did a little face lift around my uvula so to speak, so I have stitches as well. He also said that this should help with my snoring problem. I hope your all able to get this fixed for you.I will let you know if I have any issues in the next few days as this is only day one.

I hope with time it will correct/heal itself. I am so depressed. My family and friends are worried about me. I am not myself since the surgery. I pray to God this will get better, and look/feel normal again. It hurts when you paid to much and it ends up not like you wanted or expected. It's quite life changing. I try to stay positive but then the panic-attacks curls up. Hope it goes well for you and that you can breath and sleep normally. I don't have those problems. My uvula and the soft palate is on my tounge, and it look so wide and strange.

Going on to day six almost everything I eat stings even apple juice, but I think that may be the stitches. It is not pleasant but I have high hopes that it will all be worth it. Hopefully I am through the worst, keeping up with your liquids makes it a lot more tolerable. Drink ice water as soon as you wake up take your pills and put an ice pack on your throat. I find this is the best way to get through the morning. It gets very dry, stiff, and sore.

Did this ever go away for you? Mine did the same thing. I am 2 1/2 weeks post op and my left side is great but my right side feels like the uvula is attached to it as the palate is a lot lower than my left side. Thanks!

The right side is still lower and my uvula seems less pronounced than it was prior to surgery, but it doesn't bother me. However, I have gotten strep a few times after having my tonsils out. It is unusual, but I'm a weirdo. Lol. I also continue to get a lot of sore throats and now the sides just swell way out and my throat gets nearly as small as it did when I had tonsils! More referred ear pain when that happens too. However, no more stones and less chance of strep.

It will get better for you, but will take time. I had issues swallowing liquid for several months. Lots of stuff came right out my nose. Lmao! Great party trick! Hahaha!

Good luck and speedy recovery!

Thank you! I am looking forward to not having stones anymore just still getting used to everything but I know there is still healing taking place since it hasn't even been 3 weeks yet. I have a post op next week and going to ask them about it just in case just because it seems like my uvula doesn't move right now. It was definitely as hard of a recovery as I was told it would be! Thanks again!

Hi everyone I'm also in the same situation with the uvula being too low after tonsilectomy almost two months ago and the doctor said that he might have to trim it.

Hi everyone -
Reading all these messages makes me feel so much better, it's not just me!!
I have tonsil cancer and had a radical tonsillectomy. I'm almost 6 weeks post op and my soft palette is constantly swelled and my uvula hangs low (touching my tongue). I also had the metallic taste for a few weeks (gone now). I had the constant feeling that I had food getting caught at the back of my tongue. I went to see a speech pathologist and she confirmed that I am getting food caught because the tongue, back of throat and soft palette were not working together to get the food. She gave me a bunch a exercises to do make the tongue and throat muscle stronger AND to lift my pallete. My uvula hangs low but now I only feel it when I swallow instead of all the time. It's only been a week but I'm hopeful. She said it takes time and most patients get to 85-90% of where they were before surgery. So no one seems to get to 100% of what they were like before surgery. Honestly if I could get rid of the constant pallete swelling and talking through my nose - I would be very happy. I think patience is the key to this surgery recovery, unfortunately I don't have any ;) I start radiation in 2 weeks and that will just add more side effects to these ... ugh!

Hi, did this improve? I am so worried that I will always have this annoying feeling in my mouth!

My uvula is actually really small now. The right side of my soft palate is lower than before, but it doesn't cause me trouble. You will acclimate over time. Learning how to swallow again took the longest time. Everything I drank came out my nose if I wasn't careful. Lol

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply, this is really getting me down. I just have one more question- did you also have a strained feeling/pain when talking?

I actually dread speaking or laughing.

Thanks!

In the beginning, absolutely. But by the 3rd week, I started to feel much better. If it's been longer for you, maybe ask the doctor. Could be some inflammation involving the vocal cords. Best to talk to a professional.

hi did you get it done? I did and it totally affected my singing! :( whenever I force air out, even blowing balloons it comes out my nose instead of my mouth. Any body else notice this. I tried to explain it to the surgeon at the 4 week follow up and he didnt seem to understand, he just said there was scar tissue and some people notice a different resonation but it is more noticeable in kids that had huge tonsils and sounded like they had marbles in the back of their mouth when they talked before the surgery. I really hope this goes away eventually!!! :(
