I know they seem to allow childhood drinking in other countries and I don't know how to reconcile that with what I've heard about the damage it does.
It was 34 years ago when my 16 year old sister in law moved in with us. Actually she was assigned to us by the sheriff's department because she wouldn't obey her parents and was staying out and getting drunk and running with older boys who just wanted her body. Are you familiar with the song Barbi Benton did? "She out grew brass buckles on her shoes, at 12 she was fillin out her jeans. with a mind young and wild and a body that the devil styled, she could make a man do anything" That was her and she knew it. She seemed to live to show guys what they weren't going to get. Halter tops and mini skirts. Where ever she went they were hanging around her like tomcats at the house of a cat in heat. I caught her heading out one night with a miniskirt and panty hose that you could see through. I called her sister in and she made her add some undies to her outfit. We were just lucky that going commando wasn't the style back then. The deputy who worked with those situations, knew me and he felt she might do better at our house. I don't know if we did that much better but I was able to at least make her sleep at home every night and go to school every day.
At that time there was a lot of information coming out that put forth the idea that drinking during the growing years, up to about 21, was very damaging to the development of the brain. They claimed that the damage alcohol did to the brain after the age of 21 was almost insignificant compared to what it does in earlier years. So I expended a lot of effort trying to keep her drinking to a minimum and talking with her about that premise. She WAS a "wild child". I hope I helped some during the time she was here.
