Hi, I'm 20 years old and I have a problem with swelling of my lips. Lately I have noticed that there is a big swelling on my lower lip and that it hurts when I touch it. at first it was located on my lower lip only, but then it spread to my upper lip too. The swelling started shortly after I started using some anti acne cream that my friend used to treat her acne. Few days after the swelling started I stopped using the cream but the swelling didn’t disappear. What should I do about this, why are my lips swollen?

You didn’t mention what kind of a cream you were using but it is very likely that your swollen lips are swollen because of an allergic reaction to the cream or it may also be a side effect caused by some substance in the cream. If it is antibiotic antibacterial cream it may contain antibiotics like ergomycin or clindamycin that cause such side effects like the swelling of the lips. They usually go with some other symptoms in the digestive system so if you have nausea, diarrhea and vomiting you can be pretty sure that it is a side effect of using topical antibiotic. In that case you should stop using the antibiotic and consult your doctor if the swelling doesn’t disappear. It is also possible that you are allergic to some inactive substance or preservative in the cream. In that case if you stop using the cream it will almost certainly reduce the swelling of the lips. If these advices don’t help you then it would be the best to turn to your doctor and ask for his or her help. Taking somebody’s medicines, even if it’s just a simple antibacterial cream can be very dangerous. Before taking any medicine, even the simplest one you should check with your doctor to make sure it is safe to use.
