I have given up smoking for 3 weeks and have felt very sick - can't stop vomiting and have the trots too. but I am on heavy medication for a spinal problem and just wonder has anyone found like a drug muddle up? I am not going back to smoking but I am only a lite weight and losing more. Had to take a week off work because I thought it was a bug - but not I am not sure it it too incidental that it occurred at the same time. Any ideas?
Hey Everyone. I had written about all the terrible digestive issues I was suffering from shortly after I had quit smoking.
I am also in menopause which affects digestion as well. I have found something that has worked like a miracle for me in every way!!
Turmeric...a simple seasoning which is using in Indian cuisine. It is a member of the "ginger family" ...a simple spice u can buy in the grocery store. I take a supplement which I get from the health food store and use the spice sprinkled on my veges as well.
The pain in my stomach is gone! the bloating is going down.
Turmeric helps strengthen and heal the liver. and I know my liver is working waaay too hard at trying to balance hormone changes and still have energy left for digesting food.
Yes. Your digestion slows down majorly when u stop smoking. It does in menopause too.
I had been dealing with not only hormone changes affecting my stomach severly but also the quitting smoking.
That is why the gas...the bloating...and the pain!
We have all taken a stimulant (nicotine) away from our body...now everything has slowed down.....we were running on high speed in a sense..but it was not healthy for us and not normal.
Now our bodies have to adjust...and it takes time for that to happen.
I believe Turmeric is a a "superfood" it helps with lowering blood pressure...can also help with weight loss...lowering cholesterol (not that I have a problems with either).........but
it is nice to know a simple spice can perform so many little miracles.
The indians have used it for thousands of yrs...it's benefits include killing cancer cells or preventing cancer cells from spreading.
so many other benefits as well. All I know...is the pain is going away......
Time is also a healer...for this too and it has been just over 9 monthes since I quit smoking (YAY! for me!)
I quit smoking 11 months ago and for the most part feel great about it. I smoked a pack a day for 14 yrs. I have been experiencing severe bloating and gas since I have quit. I have tried almost everything to relieve these symptoms. I exercise 3x/wk and eat healthy for the most part. I am glad to know I am not the only one experiencing this. I am trying a probiotic pill and increased my water intake. I hope this helps.
Hi everyone! It's my 1st year anniversary of quitting. All I can say is that all your health problems will gone soon, just wait until your body has fully recovered from the withdrawal. Mine took me almost 10 months to finally get back to normal (of course without the smoking). I think what helped me the most is proper diet (eating less and avoiding fatty foods) and drinking C-lium Fiber every morning. Search it up, it may help you. Regards.
Just because you havent experienced it doesnt mean its not real. lol
I have had the same digestive and swelling problems every time I quit. It goes away when I start back. My theory is it is some kind of allergy that the body does not react as strongly to when you smoke because it is not working as well or because you are not eating as much of the allergen.
I visited a homeopath specialist for my stop smoking symptoms, he said my body is in shock, its been 4 months since stopping smokes and my body is still in shock. He suggested herb - a - lax from health store, take daily and at least 3 hot baths a week with epsom salts. I have been doing for a week and things are getting better, but I also cut out all processed food for last four months and exercised, yes its hard but truly worth it. Its definately not an allergy just shock to your body, go easy on it.
Quitting smoking and ulcerative colitis! I am now diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, and I'm only one year without cigarrettes... I found this bit online:
Smoking
One of the more confounding aspects of IBD is its interaction with cigarette smoking or tobacco. Smoking is associated with a worse disease course in Crohn's disease patients and may increase the risk of relapses and surgery. For some people with ulcerative colitis, smoking has a protective effect, though smoking is NOT recommended due to its significant health risks. Ulcerative colitis is often called a "disease of non-smokers."
From http://ibdcrohns.about.com/od/ulcerativecolitis/a/diffuccd.htm
So, I guess I lost my 'protection' because I now have ulcerative colitis, complete with bloody stools and painful BM. I wish they'd get up to speed on the research between bowl disease and quitting tobacco.
I am sooooooooo relieved to have found this post, I stopped smoking nearly 5 months ago, thinking that the cravings would be hell and that they was all i would have to control and contend with, oh no, i have had all kinds of things going wrong with me, but none so bad as the digestion, i was always as regular as clockwork and not over weight i even excepted that i was going to put weight on , which i did, a stone an a half to be exact, so i started to look on the internet for symptoms that i had such as flatulance, cramping, constipation, and the bloating like i was five months pregnant was the worst, i went to the doctors who run tests and found nothing she said it was probably IBS which i thought was possible, i had that befour and the symptoms are similar, and i did some research and found that IBS cause is unknown, but i think it has a lot to do with a change in lifestle and diet, and a combination of the two with the extra weight gain and the lack of chemicals now going into the stomach and like someone said my intestines are going into overdrive as if they dont know how to work properly has caused this which initially had started when i stopped smoking as my eating habits changed, hence the weight gain and now as i write this post i have started weight watchers and started being more active than i usually would be, drink more water, and i still suffer but it is not as bad, now i feel only 2 month pregnant, but after all said and done i am glad that this is probably only a temporary thing until my digestive tract heals itself after all that poisonous stuff i inhaled into my body had cased. I am still glad that i stopped smoking regardless of what els that poisonous c**p throws at me.

please use some full stops or! I thing I've been having the exact same problems as you but, I couldn't stop giggling because I was trying to read the whole thing without any pauses ;-) ! Thanks for making me smile again. I hope for both our sakes that our problems with even out and not get worse - by the looks of this website, it's 50/50 improve or get a serious bowl disease. Let's try our best to get thin and happy again! And 'punctuate' the suffering with a few laughs (u,U)/'
I have been a heavy smoker for almost 8 years. I decided to quit smoking and has been on vegetables for sometime.
My breathing has improved and i used to have throat infections when I was smoking. Al these are good.
But i developed serious digestion and gas problems with bloating in my stomach.
You feel like your stomach is ful and about to burst.
You always have a burning sensation on your upper stomach and chest.
Especially fried food has serious problems, but never felt bad that I gave up smoking.
I also put on an extra 5-6 kgs.
But have started working out again, which helps you relieve withdrawal symptoms.
It feels good to wake up in the morning and you can breathe well.
Quitting is not easy , we have to mentally prepared for it.
As Silver stallione says in the movie.."If I Can Change, and You Can Change, Everybody Can Change!"
I'm 34 and I quit smoking 2 years ago after being a smoker for 13 years (20-30 fags/day). Since day one I have all the cravings for carbs, so in just 2 months I gained 10 kg. I admit, I spoiled myself with much more chocolate than my body could manage. Anyway, after 6 months, I thought it was time to try and lose this extra weight... and here the problem began! Constipation and so many gas... that I was ashamed to go to the gym. I was trying high fiber foods, water, blah blah blah... NOTHING WORKED!The symptoms just made me more ashamed than ever. I could be all week constipated, and whenever I went to work (I'm a part time teacher) or to a friendly house... I was able to **** their house all over!I ate very carefully, worked out really tough for first time in my life... and after 6 months I manage to lose the extra weight... even for just a few months (ideal cause it was the time I got married). But constipation and gas where still bad.I had to get myself to the hospital 3 times because of the pain in my stomach. They couldn't find anything but... gas! I did all the blood tests and finally visit a gastro. He diagnosed me with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, gave me many boxes of meds... for 3 months. They didn't help very much, even if I took them all as I was supposed to do. 4 months later, I gained ALL the weight back. I know cannot lose not even a gram, whatever I eat. Only gain. And the gas... still remaining a lot and embarrassing.PS. Sorry for my English, it's not my mother language.
Hello all,
Thank god I found these blogs!!! I had been smoking for 19years and gave up 6 weeks ago and I have experienced (and am still experiencing / booked in for a blood test) all the symptoms mentioned. I am a size 6/8 have always had a high metabolism and been very active. Since smoking I have been eating whenever I can and I have been constantly constipated to the point where not even a bottle of prune juice, 15 prunes, syrup of fig, fibre in high doses and laxatives (prescribed by the Dr) have just not worked - I have seen my doctors more in the last 4 weeks then I have in the last 2 years. My stomach feels bruised and sore and is very bloated, I look pregnant and the flatulence is just painful, inconvenient and embarrassing.
However, I am still very proud of quitting and wish to remain that way. I just want to know what's going on inside - I have been really worried, and feel slightly better now.
So thank you all once again.
