I to quit smoking (2 years) and started chewing polacrilex gum . My stomach started bothering me. I mean ulcer bad. I tried everything with NO help. As you said it messes up something, so I started smoking again. Two days now and my stomach is felling MUCH better! I noticed my inards are now (lack of a better word) turning , stomach empties into intestons, gall bladder empties, ect. I can quit smoking again but until we can find out how this works... I am AMAZED.

I am so thankful to find this post because I am to the point of break down with all this bloating and stomach issues. I was up half the night in pain, I look pregnant and it physically hurts. It makes working very difficult. My question is - Does it go away? Everyone talks about how it bothers them but I can't seem to find solutions - Working out - eating healthy - I am doing these things. I have been eating fairly clean for a few weeks now, with an occasional cheat. I haven't gained much weight except on extreme bloat days - which I cannot determine what causes them. Does anyone have solutions or reassurance that after time it will go away? I do not want to smoke again I have worked hard to make it as far as I have which is about a month and 2 days but I need some reassurance there is a solution. I also took chantix and decided to quit after some of the side effects it caused. Its been a nightmare lately. So does the bloating subside eventually? Does it get better?

Absolutely same thing here. I stopped a year ago - took to vaping - I am now always bloated - ALWAYS! Its the most frustrating thing I've ever lived through. I have an EXTREMELY HIGH FIBRE diet made up of mainly raw vegetables, beans, fruit - no dairy, no processed foods, no sugar, and very moderate amounts of lean animal protein about once a week. With a diet like mine my gut should be working fine. I didn't feel like this until I stopped smoking. I'm so glad to see I'm not simply going mad - that others are having the same problem. I'm glad to have stopped smoking but this side-effect is the pits.

Hello- I started having these pains in the areas u described about 8 months before I quit smoking- I've had several tests, endoscopy, ct scan, hida scan, ultrasound and everything comes back normal. They just diagnosed me with gastritis. It's been a month now since I've quit smoking and the pain is still there everyday and now I'm constipated :( I was just wondering how u were doing and if the pains went away?

None of my symptoms have gone away. I have had a lot of abdominal pain. I did speak with a pharmasist and she told me that until the bloat goes down, adding extra fiber to your diet will make it worse. The diet makes you gasy. If you are constipated I would try prune juice. It has helped me get movement but I would make sure you have a bathroom close by. I am starting to lose weight now too like a pound a day. I haven't found anything to fix the problem yet though. I keep looking for anwers and no one seems to have them.

Am 71 yrs. of age and quit 6 months ago after 58 yrs. of smoking. Have quit a few other times without these digestive problems in the past but they're hell this time. Daily diarrhea and flatulence,no bloating or constipation. Stool culture's negative for parasites or c diff.

Have considered trying the nicotine patches or lozenges but am hesitant because I don't want to start that addiction but am leaning towards trying it for a couple of days because I do know it (nicotine) will not cause copd or cancer. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this possible solution?

Hi, I quitted 3 weeks ago. After 5 days- stomach like 9 month pregnant woman. I am 30, smoked 15 years, 30 cigarrets/day. Except this, don't drink, eat healthy, excercise a lot (intervals, cross fit, FBW) so preety healthy. I am in the middle of a lot of diagnosis. I read all posts here, bought enzymes, probiotics, ginger, I eat also garlic. 2 weeks- nth changes however dont gain weight= excercise even more and subtract 300kcal as nicotine boosts metabolism. I have just noticed, that it is worse after milk. I am gonna buy lactose free milk and check (I drink like 4-5 coffee with milk a day). I don't know if it is possible to suddenly get lactose intolerance after quitting or maybe it was masked as nicotine also makes sth ith glucose. Hope not having milk few days will help. Otherwise dont know what to do... I have no problem with smoking withdrawal, actually quitting was easy, don't want to start smoking again as live is beautiful now, skin, etc ut I look like pregnant and spring and summer is coming... Depression ahead me. Feel like sh_t.

This is my first day of quitting smoking and I feel lousy, indigestion is awful starting with a dagger like pain to the left of my right boob going all through my right rib, im drinking lots of water to try and loosen it, when you go to the docs they dont tell you all about the symptoms, you have to read about them.I suffer with ibs so thats not helping matters.

I quit smoking over a year ago having smoked for 27 years.  I've now been living 16 months with severe constipation, bloating, gas etc.  Doctor has prescribed various things, one of which was Fybogel, this was actually working, settled my stomach etc but unfortunately made the gas problem 10 times worse so i stopped the medication.  I'm still struggling on a daily basis and can mostly only have a decent bowel movement with the use of laxatives.  I drink water and eat fairly healthily but doesn't make ANY difference!

Going back to docs tomorrow to see what my next move is...

Love feeling healthier since i stopped smoking but daily life is a nightmare, i seriously hope things get back to normal sometime in the future.

It's very reassuring to know i'm not the only one suffering!

i am so happy to have found this thread. I too am experiencing weight gain, gas, constipation, joint pain, tiredness, depression, diahreah, sometimes feel faint. Am 44, have been smoke free for 4 weeks & was smoking 1 pack a day...the side effects from quitting have been so bad that I've actually thought of starting again but I remain determined...I am looking for answers in how to treat these side effects & agree that there is little to no information & doctors don't have the answers. I often have lower abdominal pain on days where I'm constipated because I push my abdomen inward with my hands so I can eliminate something...sorry tmi but I don't know where else to turn to

OMG I'm so happy that I found this blog. I quit smoking 3 weeks ago, after 10 years of smoking a pack a day. I will never smoke again, I hate it and don't miss it at all. But I thought I was pregnant (seriously, I took a pregnancy test), but I wasn't. Then started panicking: did I have some sort of cancer/other disease? But now, after reading all your posts, it all makes sense now. Thank you for sharing your stories! I will try the turmeric, and keep on exercising and eating healthy, and hopefully the smelly rotten farts, constipation and enormous belly will be gone soon...
