I had been a heavy pot smoker for 12 years and I do mean heavy! About 4 blunts a day easy some times more. I was a size 4/6 then. Always had the munchies etc. I recently quit (about 2mths now) I have since done nothing but gain weight. I am now a size 10 so I have begun watching what I eat and trying to lose some of the weight from quitting. You DO gain after stopping.

It affects people differently. I've smoked heavily for 15 years. I'm 5'10 and weighed around 105-108. I couldn't gain weight and I ate ALOT!, around 4,000 calories a day.

I quit smoking about 6 months ago and have since gained 10-15 lbs. Never in my life have I been this big and never have I gained weight so fast. I never have and don't smoke cigarettes.

I'm very shocked by this whole thing. I wanted to quit smoking so I could be a better long distance runner as my running was regulated by my ability to breathe and get enough oxygen while running. It wasn't working at a level I wanted, so I decided to quit smoking.

Even with adding running to my life, I still gained the weight.

I also gained weight when I stopped smoking! I suggest you start eating healthy before stopping smoking. Then replace the smoking habit with the gym. I weighed 68-70 kg before I started smoking weed (5'3"), and lost 23kg. I think I weighed 49-50kg for about 8 or so years. I stopped smoking, and gained weight back up to 58kg. I then started smoking again (because i didnt want to be 'fat') and lost it all again. I stopped again, had two kids and now weigh 70kg again. I tell you it might affect some people whereby all the want to do it eat, hence putting on weight. But for me I could eat a bag of chips a day, chocolate McDonalds whatever - and I stayed small for years!

I don't believe it's the weed that causes people to lose or gain weight, it's the nicotine in the tobacco you use that causes either effect. I've always struggled with my weight and have therefore maintained a 1300 a day calorie diet for the last five years. I smoked copious amounts of weed until a couple of summers ago. I quit weed as a pre-cursor to quitting smoking altogether. I didn't gain weight when I quit smoking pot, my weight continued as normal with the continual dieting on 1300 calories a day. I spent 18 months decreasing the amount of tobacco I smoked until I was smoking around five roll ups a day. Three months ago I quite smoking altogether. I stopped dieting for four weeks when I quit smoking as I didn't think I could do both at once. In that four weeks I gained one stone. I have since gone on a 1000 calories a day diet and I now exercise for four and a half hours a week. Since my new diet and exercise regime I have managed to maintain my weight (including the extra stone I gained). It's hard work not gaining weight when you give up smoking tobacco but I wouldn't go back to smoking again.

I was a serious smoker for about 4 years. I quit about 10 months ago and since have gained about 30-40 pounds. I was smoking about 2 bowls nightly and more on the weekends. I always had the misconception that because I was eating while smoking that if I quit I'd lose weight. It was just the opposite. Nothing in my life changed other than quiting. Yes, at first you might lose weight as you're going through withdraws because you feel nauseous. However overall I've gained a significant amount of weight and the only thing I can contribute it to is no longer smoking. I'm now considering starting again just because of this. If you don't have a real reason to quit, I wouldn't. It didn't interfere with my job or my life, I just had fears of needing to find another job and drug testing. Because of the negative impacts I'm experiencing, such as now needing to find another outlet for stress, relief from anxiety, trouble sleeping, and of course weight gain I'm considering picking up where I left off. There's a reason many states are legalizing it for mental health benefits and I'm hoping mine does shortly.

I smoked nightly and had the munchies (whole bags of mini kit kats disappeared). I stopped and gained 15lbs. It is part of the effects of quitting. However, my new found ability to breath and focus let me be more active and i lost it all fairly quick.

I smoked pot for about a year straight, everyday about a spliff to a gram a day, never had munchies alot, I lost an incredible amount of weight, I just quit about 2 weeks ago, no weight gain, but I have not been eating alot, and I am a tobacco smoker still, so I guess if you dont eat and smoke tobacco you wont gain.

Ok listen everyone. I smoked over 8 years and I took like 1 month to a year breaks in between that 8 year period (like 6-7 fat blunts n sh*t). When you smoke heavily the weight you lose is muscle lost, which is double the weight of body fat. You lose it due to inactivity, being a veggie when stoned and munching the f**k out (and a lot of excess food you eat get shitted out (I've s**t loads that go above sea level in the toilet lol)). The weight you gain is because your body lost so much muscle your metabolism has become slower and the metabolism is what burns fat (muscle=metabolism=fat burn, muscle lost=metabolism lost=less fat burn) and what I am saying is when you quit you begin to do more sh*t in life and you may get aches and pains but that is just soreness which indicates that you are gaining muscle (generally speaking) and that is what is most likely putting the extra pounds on the scale. NOW that doenst mean if you gain 50 lbs you gained 50 lbs of muscle, if you eat a bunch of sh*t you are likely to be gaining both fat and muscle. The scale doesnt mean sh*t on your general well being use your eyes to see if you are getting fatter and listen to your body if you are feeling well (don't rely of the scale to indicate health although it does gauge what changes are happening but you must use your eyes to see if you are gaining some definition from muscles or getting fatter or both). I dont want people getting the misconception that quitting weed makes you fat, you make yourself fat and/or anything else you want or dont want to be for that matter. I just had to post this b/c I was looking at how people are fairing with quitting (I need some motivation too) and read a lot about people gaining weight and for some that can be a sh*t thing to read if they are on their own journey of quitting and look here for advice (and being scared out of quitting for above reasons lol). Good posts though other than that just had to clear some misconceptions.

Anyone who thinks smoking weed helps you gain weight is either not a full on smoker or started smoking before giving thier body a chance to develop so they have no idea what is on the other side. Also it sounds like typical weed smokers justifying their habit. Heres a few tips to lead you people in the right direction...... You grow when you sleep and quitting weed helps you sleep better. You lose REM sleep and dreams are not remembered You're heart rate is increased when you smoke weed. This burns calories. Burning calories = weight loss You're body does not process food the same way when you are stoned. In a way it just goes to waste and 99% of what you're eating is junk and sugary food anyway Smoking weed long term has effects on testosterone which helps you grow. Decrease in testosterone levels = no growth and no sex life! Dry mouth, which is a side effect of smoking weed, rots you're teeth due to no saliva to protect you're teeth If you are a real weed smoker, given the choice of weed and food, a real smoker will choose weed. FACT!! Smoking weed everyday makes you lazy and feel burnt out all the time with no energy which escalates stress levels which is not good for the body. It is a vicous cycle and hard to get out of. An example of this is dragging yourself into work or college every morning then getting irritable and moody over little things due to you not sleeping properly the night before. You smoke some more weed thinking its calming you down and the cycle starts again. Think about this carefully, when does your body ever get time to recover as sleep is affected as mentioned above?? I think you people are mixing up recreational use with addiction. They are 2 totally different things. Educate yourselves with facts and real experiences before giving wrong advice to others. #1 your rudeness and immaturity (and the fact i just got done reading about 20 posts in a row of people gaining massive weight after quitting, just like i did.. and everybody ive known) kind of invalidate your "pro" opinion.
#2 you have been smoking since you were 13 and now you are 23.... and you have gained weight..... most people tend to gain weight when they age from 13 to 23, lol. You haven't stopped smoking apparently so what weight did you gain besides becoming a technical "adult"? Did you quit and lose weight? You make no sense.... oh. and you're ignorant and flat out wrong :P

well... you're wrong... and most of the facts in your post are pure fabrications from your imagination. On top of that you're most likely wrong in your assumptions (you should have inserted that word somewhere) as if you did any research you would see t hat it is body fat index that is effected, not muscle. Very elaborate fabrication though... next time research before you write another dissertation on something you are clearly just guessing on. I laughed out loud when i read "Good posts though other than that just had to clear up some misconceptions". Thanks for clearing that up for us, lol. Next.
