f*****g brilliant post, mostly. i don't know if speeding up your heart rate accounts for the weight loss (actually it almost certainly doesnt as studies are beginning to show it is actually a mitochondrial issue throughout the body, cellular metabolic issue. Lots of things speed up the heart and don't make you gain weight... and if you do the math your heart's use of calories with the elevation of heart-rate couldn't remotely account for anything more than a arguably statistically significant fraction of the weight loss.) See.... so many theories posed as fact that even you yourself fall victim to it :P There is real medical evidence out there people should be presenting (or for Christ's sake at least researching)... not guessing at the cause and selling it as fact.) FACT: Most people lose weight when smoking weed and gain it back when they quit. FACT: UTFSE if you want actual answers to this mystery... because every theory here has been presented as fact and every one is flat out wrong.

Ok. Ill admit some things could use better clarification, but what I have said was a direct result of my experience, being a guy who works out, and stopped intermittently when smoking too much... I did not tout anything as biblical fact as you say.... this comes from my 9 years working out, and getting results, losing them, gaining them back etc.... I can be wrong only in the fact that people here I give advice to don't work out or have done very little and I assume people do when I typed the post. Now you say ONLY body fat index is effected, well if you are inactive your muscles DO fade away from inactivity, which most likely is the case for most potheads (being inactive and all), and once you lose the muscle you end up losing a lot of weight as well... You need to look at your body mass index to get the most precise reading on what going on with your weight gain or loss (fat/muscle/water etc... ratio). I am only speculating on what people do when they quit weed (working out, or doing some labour intensive work) which is where my input could be flawed, but when I quit weed I became more active again and worked out harder than ever and gained weight in that manner. There is no need to be an arrogant prick when you have a rebuttal, you seem like quite the jackass pointing out flaws in other people's posts, but have anything constructive to add of your own. Get a frikkin life loser, who trolls boards to talk sh*t to people trying to help others better themselves?

I quit weed after 2 years of smoking 4-5 times a week and have gained 2 stone in 6 months, when smoking all I ate is pizza and kebabs, I actually eat much healthier now, but just keep getting heavier so I guess its just dependent on your body.

i smoked for about 5-6 years. i was about 55kgs throughout. about 2 years ago i was dancing full time and quit weed for about 6 months. and smoked about 2 cigarettes a day after about 4 months away... gained 12 kgs. after finishing up contract and coming home i smoked pot again and after about 3 months had started to lose the weight, still exercising as i usually do. after about 6-9 months i had lost the 12kgs i put on. then about 3 months ago i decided to stop for good as I dont want to be a smoker forever. I didnt smoke tobacco in my pot so the theory of it being tobacco speeding up your metabolism im not sure i buy it. 3 months of smoke-free i have gained 12kgs maybe even more, i cannot control what i put in my mouth and maybe its because im alert more of the day so gives me more time to think about food haha. i exercise a lot - 6 days a week... i dont know how to control it.. if anyone has points, please reply! i would get an amazing sleep as a pot smoker, and i get amazing sleep when im not. apart from the 3-4weeks of nightmares and night sweats after quitting initally hahaha

I have quit smoking about 2 and half yeas ago and have put on about 18-20 kgs, yep.. I was about 9 stone and now I am 13 stone n a good day..  feel better but really unhappy about the diet. My doctor said the more you used the weight you tend to put on. Obviously I was a heavy smoker. I went to the the 5-6 times a week for about 2 hours and lost ony about a stone- stone and a half.. After smoking my taste buds were heightened and I wake up hungry, I never use to eat for enjoyment, I rarely enjoyed food. Whereas now I enjoy food and I find dieting hard... I first 6 months I gained 2 stone, first year about 3 stone I have been up and down since... People say get the munchies when you smoke, I went past that stage of smoking and rarely ate unless I smoked.. But I ate alot of junk food and never put on weight.

I have been smoking since 18 I am now 26. I was not skinny but before I started but I was about 130lbs. As the years went on at the age of 25 I was about 119lbs. That is a big weight loss. I smoked almost everyday I would get the muchies but in reality I didn't eat much at all until I would smoke and I would eat anything I could get my hands on but as much as I ate I never gained weight. To be honest I think it's because my body got use to eating all this c**p after I got high and when I wasn't I didn't really have a craving for food at all. But I never was hungry to much when I wasn't high point blank. Anyways I haven't smoked in a almost 2 months and I didn't go through the phase of having no appetite at all instead I ate and ate and ate. Like 3 times a day. Hell maybe 4 if I could fit it in before bed time lol. I am now noticing that I'm gaining weight mostly in my waist and belly area which I do not like at all. My weight now is 125. 5lbs away from where I was in my teen days. I do believe you can gain weight after smoking. But I believe if you continue to make an effort to still eat normally 3 times a day while smoking pot you will maintain your weight but you may not get much bigger then what you are now. I'm no doctor I'm just stating my own facts. Now on to what things I have experience when I quit smoking. Please be aware everyone is different! Me, personally. I did have any cravings after I quit right away. One day I didn't feel like buying none and said f*** it I'm going to stop for a while. About 2 weeks later I had a dream very vivid dream of token one. Lol I woke up and wanted a bowl a blunt anything that would get me high. It only lasted 2 days lucky for me. After that no more cravings and still none. I did have some nights I had trouble sleeping but after getting put on overtime at work I was sleep soon as I get the pillow. My leg thitches seem to occur more then they use to. I had them all the time growing up but when I started smoking pot it went away. I also have a lot of funny dreams that I actually remember. I couldn't remember them before. Other then that I am still active. Weed never made me too lazy because I'm OCD! I was only lazy when I wanted to be so i can't really say weed made me lazy. I maintained my habtit. I kept a great job and I still work there. My bills was always paid on time and the house stayed clean and my social life is still great. Sex is always awesome since I heard smoking pot could affect your sex drive. I really still feel normal other then being high and laughing at any and everything. Me, personally don't think it's bad to smoke weed. You just need to be smart and know how to maintain it. Don't let it overcome you. Still work or go to school or do both everyday. Eat 3 times a day to make sure you don't loss to much weight. Try to not eat to much c**p that will cause you to lose your apperitate as I did. I will be careful with that when I decide to start back smoking again. Just don't let it overcome you like I said and you'll be fine.

Question of the year.. Does using marijuana cause one to loose weight?  Well all I know for sure is my story... I had only smoked a couple of times in jr high n high school, besides cigarettes. I was 5 ft. 2 in. and about 105 (size 5/6) at age 14 and got pregnant, quit smoking cigarettes, and gained 40 lbs by the time I was 15 n had the baby (7 lb 14 oz).. I started smoking cigarettes again and stayed at about 140-145 (size10/12) until I was about 17, started smoking marijuana heavily on a daily basis, and started loosing weight.. By the time I was about 23 and still only 5 ft 2 in, I was only about 115 lbs (size 7/9). Then I got pregnant with my second child, quit smoking marijuana but not cigarettes this time, only gained about 20 lbs during that pregnancy, and was a healthy 125 lbs (size 7/9) shortly after I had him (6 lbs 11 oz), but slowly began gaining, as I was still no longer using. When he was about 11 months old and I was up to about 140-145 (size 10/12) again, I found out I was pregnant with my 3rd child, but with her I actually lost weight at first. I lost about 10 lbs and gained back 17 maybe by the time I had her ( 6 lbs 9 oz). Then I had my tubes tied and fluctuated in weight from 150-165 (size 12/13) over the next 3 yrs or so. I still was not using marijuana over these years, and actually quit cigarettes for about 8 months or so, but eventually began both again, only this time my weight still fluctuated. About 2 yrs later, I was about 170 lbs (size 13/14) and I found out I was pregnant with my 4th child, something they had told me over the last couple of years couldn't be happening. I had asked them a couple of times, as I was not regular with my weight or with my monthly, and seamed to slowly be gaining more, and more, no matter how little I ate or how much junk food I cut out of my diet. I stopped smoking marijuana and cigarettes when I found out, which was when I was already a little over 4 months along. By the time I had him (9 lbs 4 oz), I was at about 180-185 lbs (size 14/15), and had my tubes cauterized and removed this time. I began smoking cigarettes and marijuana again about 6-8 months later, and at his 9 month check up I found out I was 195 lbs. I thought, at only 5 ft 2 in, I had no business being 200 lbs knowing I can maintain well below that if I tried harder. I cut out all pop besides when I went out drinking, sugars, snacks, and starches, and only ate carbs that had nutritional value, all the while I was again a heavy daily smoker of marijuana. I shed 10 lbs a month for about 3 months, then 5 lbs a month for about 3 months, and plateaued at about 140 lbs. Thinking, since I was older n had more children maybe this must be my regular weight, I decided to bring back pop into my life and maybe some snacks here and there. I gained back about 5-10 lbs over the next 30 days or so, thus decided to go back to the diet. I lost another 5 lbs each month over the next few months and plateaued again at about 130 lbs (size 5/6). Since then, I started eating whatever really and drinking soda just as I did a few months before, only this time I kept the weight off. I was about 130-135 lbs (size 5/6) for the next 2 yrs or so. At one point, I even got down to about 125 lbs (size 3/4), but went right back up to 130-135 lbs over the holidays. So from there tell about a yr ago, which was only about 2 yrs or so, I was that same weight and a heavy daily marijuana smoker and still smoked cigarettes. I was still only about 135-140 lbs (size 7) about 7 months ago, just after I quit smoking marijuana again. Now, over the last 6 months or so since I've been clean n sober, I have gained about 25-30 lbs with my weight fluctuating from 160-165 lbs (size 9/10) for the last couple months even though I have been eating healthier and vigorously walking 2-4 miles each week, neither of which I did while I was using. Due to all these factors, I am beginning to believe that, at least for myself, the marijuana use was and is a factor in my weight loss and gain history.

I was always a chubby kid in grade school, to the point of being picked on, but I was well trained to kick some bully butt. I was introduced to pot by my best friend when I was 9, he was 16. I joined the Marines in 86 right after graduating at 194 pounds, and there too was on pork chop platoon, my weight always an issue. Oh, the year before I graduated, I met my biological father to fing he was well over 600 pounds, which has haunted me ever since. I graduated boot camp at a solid 170 pounds!!!! but even with constant vigorous exercise over the next 4 years, I gained up to 230 pounds, and left the Marines honorably, but knowing I wouldnt be able to keep up with the running another 4 years. I never smoked pot in the Marines or the 3 months befoore I joined, but I did restart afterwards. Thru various employment, I gained up to 294 as a motel manager in 2002, my heaviest to date I know of. Since then, I have lost down to the 235 - 245 range average. I quit smoking bud and ingesting edibles 45 days ago. I have tried to control my diet better, but I feel like I'm swelling up like a balloon. My knees are hurting, My ankles and lower back are stinging from reasonably vigirous walking. Im 45 now, and I dont want to go back to smoking, as it really sucked just quitting on my own will power. All my friends still smoke, and all of them have noticed my rapid swelling and obvious weight gain. This is much worse than being a dedicated stoner in my opinion. Im constantly increasing my daily workout routines, my daily outdoor sweat activities, but I still feel like Im bloating out of control. Dieuritic water pills dont help. fiber doesnt help. eating 5 small meals a day doesnt help vs constantly being high and munching all day.... I just dont get it. I have read in some medical research that marijuana does help regulate some peoples weight, while it also causes others to gain weight. In 45 days, I have gained from 245ish to almost 275, with better diet control, no munchies, healthier foods. WTF? i'm even noticing my breathing is worsening, whereas right after I quit, it seemed to get better. My stamina and endurance have dropped substantially. Even my proud stoner attitude has downturned into a boring humdrum everything sucks lifestyle, which I expected, but not this much. I am just as active, but my mindset is nowhere near as into the activeness. My whole family is insanely proud I decided to quit, but they all expect me to fail.... I know Im only at day 45 after 25+ years of stondedism, but I cant afford to gain any more weight. Im eating like a friggin bird, and this isnt my nature at all. I dont know what to do.

This is true to those who did nothing as a smoker me on the other hand worked in a factory lifting 50 lb boxes all day so I doubt I didn't have muscle being that I'm a girl who is 5'2 and has not weighed over 110 in the past 4 years due to my heavy all day pot smoking I'm talking wake up smoke go on break smoke get off smoke ect. Before I start smoking heavy I weighed 119 I went down to 92 during that time and maintained about 105 if I ate all day I quit smoking 2 months ago and gained about 8 lbs so far so I'll say you will gain after quiting. Why?..no one knows there's no scientific evidence to prove anyone's statements just individual experiences
