Certainly not a doctor, but studying nutrition among gods. Seems to me that if you've had no replacement for the intestinal fauna that was shuttled out with the antibiotic, that would be the first thing to address. The backaches could be caused by the nerves innervating to the stomach and intestines. Sometimes back pain is an indication of organ imbalance to either. Have you considered taking him to acupunture, or at least a holistic/certified naturopathic physician that can address this whole question? It's not just the back, it's what the back is telling us. Often in holistic medicine the back in an indicator of another issue. Best of luck.

My 4 year old son has been having strep A crises once every two weeks for the past 3 and a half months. Very high fever (39-40 deg cel) accompanied by vomiting. This time, it started with the vomiting, however the fever is not that high, the pain looks sever as he cannot swallow anything! The doctor perscribed several antibiotics and this has been ongoing, i.e. as soon as we finish a treatment of 10 days, it comes again after a week;s rest! The doctor is now propsing a continuous antibiotic treatment for 4 months or some type of (very painful) injection to be done once a month for 6 months. I still haven;t decided whether I have to go on with the treatment or check for other alternatives.

I realize I am a dinosaur from another era but the older I get the more sense the old ideas prove to make. 30 years ago my children and I used to get strep 4 or 5 times a year. After a couple of years of this their pediatrician, who had been my pediatrician as well, said we had to be in pretty regular contact with someone who was a carrier. Wasn't quite sure I believed someone could carry the bacteria that was making us all as sick as we kept getting without showing signs of it themselves. Long story short it was proven my husband was, in fact, the carrier we were exposed to. A couple of years later I got a divorce. Sure enough, from that time on two of my kids (now grown) have had strep one time each and the other two and myself never. The antibiotic that worked best for us was Ceclor. Added benefit it tastes like bananas so I never had to fight the kids to take it. One last old school tip: sugar kills bacteria. Take a cup of ice and pour just enough apple juice (the real stuff, not a juice drink) to cover it. Put it in a blender and make a slushy. The ice helps with the swelling and re-hydration, the sugar in the apple juice helps with the infection and gives a little nutrition. If your child is really dehydrated you can use half apple juice (no citrus, it will burn like fire) and half pedialyte.

My son is 5 years old and has had strep 3 times in the past 6 weeks. His worst symptom is a bad headache. As soon as he says he has one, I know it's strep. I can't figure out how he contracts it because there aren't any other cases in his school. He finishes the 10 days of his antibiotics and a few days after that he starts complaining of the headaches again. It's frustrating because it doesn't ever fully seem to go away. I don't like him being on antibiotics constantly. Is there anything else the Dr's can do?

My son had strep and we completed the whole cycle of amoxicillin. Two days after he finished it came back even stronger. He just started  taking cefdinir. The doctor told us that the crevices in the tonsils are curved and can harbor the bacteria. He said that the antibiotics will not always get to those bacteria deep in the tonsils.

The antiobiotics are cauing the joint/ back pain... They do me the same way. I have had strep throat for the 3rd time now this year with spots on lower legs and was told by a skin doc that is prob from a strep infection in my bloodstream. I'm going to the ER tomorrow and better get some help this time as these medications are not working and not removing the bacteria from my bloodstream.

It is very important to get rid of that infection in his bloodstream. This is my 3rd round this year fighting it, But going to the ER tomorrow ...I have sore down on my lower legs and I went to a skin doc and he said they see that when someone has a leftover strep throat infection that has got into the bloodstream. I've heard that the bacteria can effect organs, lungs etc if not got rid of.

My husband has been experiencing the same thing. Have you ever figured out how to get over it?

Honey ... The stomach ache is a result of the antibiotics upsetting the flora in your child's digestive tract.

I will give you some advice, but it maybe hard for you to follow it.

Each time you "rush" your child to the ER and get ... amoxicilin,  clyndomycin and now we're on augmenton.

You are preventing your child from developing resistance to the 20 or so species of strep.

Don't get me wrong .. strep is dangerous. One or two of the 20 kind of strep bacteria are flesh eating. Those bacteria

have no clue if they are in a dead rat's gut or in your child's throat. They spew toxic material to break down protein, making

it easier for them to get nutrition, they also multiply fast because they do not want to compete with other like minded bacteria

for the excrement in the dead rat's gut.  If your child has flesh eating strep ... well you will have a clew or two in a day or two,

in which case a visit to the ER is a really good idea.

Here is advice which by the sound of your post you will ignore. Have the antibiotics on hand, from what you have written

you must have a stash of them left over.  I prefer Zitromax - Azithromycin 500mg.  Clyndomycin is sorta in the same family

I might give it to my dog but not my kid.

Do not take your kid to the ER .. go to your regular doctor the next day with your coughing contagious kid and ask for

the Augmentin  or better yet Zitromax. When you get home, instead of giving your child the medication put it in your

medicine case, do not give it to your child.

It takes 10 days for strep to work itself out, bundle your kid up and if you where able to score something to help the kid

sleep give it to him ( a shot of Scotch has the same effect .. just kidding). Let the little b****r sleep, give him Jewish penicillin

(chicken soup), warm tea, a tad of cough suppressant so he does not hack his throat raw, and let him ride it out for the next

five days. You might want to pop one antibiotic in his mouth .. but just one so he does not get sicker and wait and see what

happens.

If the strep starts to move down into his lungs .. well you have the antibiotics there, so use the. If the strep levels out and

hopefully gets progressively better ... let him stay "sick" for the next five day. He is a kid, kids are supposed to get sick.

Strep stays around for long time, the full course is about 10 days. However by day five your kid's immune system has

recognized and recorded the strep bacteria, and learned to attack it when and if it sees it again. After 5 days wack

the remaining bacteria with the Zitromax .. complete the full dose. That should do it, Augmentin by the way would be

the second choice.

The ER is for EMERGENCIES, unfortunately many "drama" queen mothers rush their kid there for strep. They get

a script of some antibiotic, the kid never really gets better, because the same bacteria will always be there and

the kid's immune system never learns to deal with it .........................................

You are a m***n ... ride out the strep for a week ... then take antibiotics ... you won't die (well hopefully .. lol) and your
immune system will learn to fight the strep ...

I had strep Christmas 2011. I had it for over a week and finally went to the Dr. And was given a prescription and told to come back in 7 days if there was no improvement. So I did as I was told and went back, this happened 3 times so I was sick for over a month. During the 3rd round of antibiotics I developed a severe rash from my neck down to my groin so they sent me to a dermatologist who told me the strep virus had caused the rash, that it was psoriasis and I would have outbreaks for the rest of my life. I continued to feel run down and have a minor sore throat for two months. The Dr. Finally did a blood test, determined the strep virus had gone into my blood stream and prescribed a different antibiotic. Since then I have had strep twice. Both times it was accompanied by severe upper back pain that was not present in 2011. Since the pain came at the onset with the sore throat I disagree with the people who are saying it is from the antibiotics. I think it may have something to do with the number of times and severity of the infections. According to the dermatologist the strep lives in your body and waits for something to trigger it, a cold, allergies, stress, whatever and that is why it tends to reoccur. Not sure if this will help anyone but that is my experience with strep.
