My husband has the same thing, when he went to the doctor they did some x-rays and nerve testing and found out he had a nerve that was being pinched between two disc. but you really should see a docter because it could be your heart also.

This happened to me just last night and I believe the tennis elbow is the prob ... it's so painful it wakes one up in the night and the claw hand is scary! I believe it's caused from where I work and the reps of movements. For the ladies with child.. my left hand did that when pregnant ... could not bend my thumb at all. Doc said to me then 20 yrs ago that sometimes that happens during pregnancy and that if it went away after baby was born.. great if not.. prob surgery to fix whatever that was. Lucky it left after baby came. You can buy a arm brace/wrap at drug stores that actually help you not to overuse certain muscles and therefore not having the pain. I have one and plan on using it more after last night... ouuuuuuuch! And of course a Ibprophen to hopefully help.. Aleve has Naproxin in it.. which also is good. The OTC has 1/2 the amount as the prescription amount. But, try not to get dependent on these as you will end up with bad headaches and we don't need anymore pain. Odd that a headache med can actually cause headaches as a side effect.. but they do.

to relieve pain and numbness I place a tennis ball just a bit forward of my  right arm pit area, squeezing gently my arm to my rib cage. The pain is gone within seconds, and I'm able to sleep without numbness. For slight swelling that occurs I hold onto a damp wash cloth with ice inside or cold tap water running over the palm. During the day time the same activity with the tennis ball returns my ability to drive etc. I have had a nerve conduction study done to have the doctors tell me my ulnar nerve is in hyperactive state continuously, no therapy was suggested.  We may not have a cure for this yet, we do have ways to relieve the suffering without continuous pharmecuticals.

When I take Omega 3 fish oil, calcium and magnesium I get some relief from the numbness. Try eating more fruits and vegetables and less sugar. Try deep breathing. Rest numb hand often, I spend far tooo much time on computer holding mouse, so I just take my hand OFF the mouse while I'm thinking.

You may not be sleeping on your arm, but I bet you are either sleeping on your shoulder, or sleeping in a position that causes the blood vessels to get pinched, they do all run that area weather your carrying or not!

My daughter has exactly the same type of problem.  She was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome.  There are three types .. arterial (where one of the ribs may impinge the blood flow), venous which may cause the skin to get purplish or mottled, or neurogenic .. which is the nerve compression.

I get numbness in my right arm when I am riding my bike working out and especially when I'm asleep. I work in the oil field and carry steel around and my hands are getting cramped up obviously because my job but what concerns me is my right arm going numb especially at night

I will lay down at night and within 1 minute my whole arm goes numb from elbow down, it's painful but yet completely numb, note it hurts and goes numb during the day, only on my right side

Not true--surgery is not the only answer--not even the best answer. A chiropractor can help relieve pressure on the disc, and there are nutritional supplements that can help the disc regenerate. (I had a herniated disc from an injury, and am fine now, after seeing a chiropractor and taking supplements for a while.)

My right arm hurts more and tingles when I use the computer for an extended period of time. When I type. I don't know if the position that I hold my body is affecting this or not but it is extremely noticeable after long use of the computer.
