I am looking at these old posts trying to figure out what I have, I feel the roughness in the inside of my lips, under my tongue ect and it isn't painful either, just annoying, but I do know this, it came about when I was visiting my cousin and used her new Crest Toothpaste the 3D White, I didn't have it until then and I don't have a salt water pool, so check out your toothpaste, and see if that isn't the problem. I'm experiencing similar symptoms for about four days. It's not painful, but annoying. Did you ever receive a diagnosis or treatment? Or did it clear on its own? Any follow up info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have the exact same problem it just showed up over night. I also have the little white specs under my tongue. I sure hope it goes
Away on it's own.

Earlier posters:  Did any of your doctor visits reveal what this is?  Yeast?  Irritation from food?  Was there any treatment, or how long did it take to go away on it's own?  For the past 3 days I have been experiencing the same rough texture under my tongue, especially along the veins, and at the base of my lower-inner gums, along with some visible tiny white bumps.  This morning it felt especially uncomfortable and a little raw.  Brushing my teeth with Crest ProHealth toothpaste seemed to offer a slight relief but only for an hour or so.  Any information would be most appreciated, since this seems to be a fairly common problem!

For me, I am fairly certain the grainy white bumps on the inside of my upper and lower lips are related to an allergy to citric acid.  I've been working to identify my various food allergies (gluten, soy, now citrus) for a while using an elimination diet.  (The allergist I went to said that the medical process is not as precise as one would think). Meaning, I take out the suspected foods for several days/weeks and see if my symptoms go away - then reintroduce one at at time in a small amount to see what happens.  I've suspected citrus for a while and have been avoiding orange juice, lemonade, etc., with moderate success.  I was hoping citric acid was not the issue because it is in almost everything, but I ate a bunch of salsa this week and suddenly I've got white bumps on my lip and back of my throat that weren't there before.  I also have a painful bump at the base of my scalp that also happens when I eat an orange, or accidentally use a product containing soy (or eat a soy-based food - doesn't seem to matter).  Additionally, I started to feel like my throat was closing up on salsa day and it was hard to breathe: mild anaphylaxis.  I stopped eating the salsa that day (b/c I ran out) and the bumps started getting smaller a couple days later.  Accidentally had some yogurt that had citric acid in it today (missed that one in the fine print, probably b/c I was hungry) and the bumps seem to be coming back already. Now I think I understand, but I'm not happy about it.  Citric acid can be found in just about everything: soup, ketchup, pasta sauce, salsa,  yogurt, shampoo, lotion, gluten free snack bars, fruits, crackers, popsicles, etc.  The reaction for me isn't nearly as bad or long lasting as what happens with gluten... so when given a choice, I'll probably chance the citrus food before a wheat or soy one in an emergency situation.  On a typical day, I'll avoid all 3 of these ingredients if I can.

For others, the culprit may be citric acid or some other similarly ubiquitous additive.  Sometimes these less common food allergens are not listed in ingredients of packaged items, but instead are called "natural flavorings" or something similar. Beware of mystery flavorings if you suspect you have any food allergies at all.  I've gotten horrible reactions from what I consider accidental "natural flavor poisonings". The only real treatment is to avoid the stuff that bothers you... if can find all of it in your life.

i believe it is just a vitamin deficiency. possibly vitamin A or omega-3.   i had this problem for a week or two and it cleared up when i ate yams, also known as sweet potatoes.  last night i had a cup worth and the problem was 80% gone this morning so i had another cup and it cleared up completely within an hour or so.  i did recently stop taking my omega supplement a week or so before experiencing this problem.

I have had this problem for two weeks.  I have been so worried.  I am so glad to hear that other people have the exact same symptoms.  I have not yet seen what the problem is. Did anyone ever find out?

Hello I seem to be having the same problem as everyone on here but mine started off with been rou feeling underneath my tongue and now it's also feels bait swollen and sore? I have read a few other websites about this and someone has said its can lead to gum cancer? Should I be worried about this and go see a doctor or is it something that just happens now and then? If so, has anyone got any ideas on how to get the swelling down? Thank you

My Wife and I are having the same issue. 2 Days ago we were at an event. Neither of us had eaten anything all day but then went on to drink about 6 drinks each. During the event we both ate small spinach pies (spanakopita) and nothing else. The next morning i woke up with what felt like a dry mouth. After drinking a bunch of water i noticed the feeling persisted. Running my tongue along the front inside of my mouth i felt the rough texture. Taking a look in the mirror it looks like lots of tiny bumps, slightly white. It seems to have gotten worse. Sides of mouth, back of mouth, under tongue, throat. My throat is also slightly sore. The bumps themselves are not worse.. just that they have spread. My sense of taste is much less as well.. My first thought was thrush.. but i consider myself healthy, with healthy gut.. But the binge drinking would seem to suggest thrush. Strange that both me and my wife got it at the exact same time and neither have had anything like this before.

This went away in a week or two. I lowered my intake on anything that had acid in it and it went away on its own. I also used the new Crest tooth paste one time and don't know if that had anything to do with it or not. So check your tooth paste also. They all have different ingredients in them and my dentist says anything that advertise it works for many different things are not the best all the time, stay with the one that has worked best for you. If its sensitive then stay with sensitive, not the sensitive with whitening and pro whatever, they tend to mis represent the effects and can cause you mouth allergies. Hope this helps...

For about a week, I've been having symptoms similar to what several people in this thread have reported: a gritty, sand like texture to the skin on the roof of the back of my mouth/throat, under my tongue, and the inside of my bottom lip in front of my teeth.  The throat problem showed up over night, and the bumps under my tongue and then my lips followed in the days afterward. 

I just saw my doctor about it, and she believes that it's being caused by blocked salivary glands and it should resolve itself with time. I believe the precise term she used in diagnosing my symptoms was "mucoceles."

However, if it does not relieve itself, it could result in further swelling, which can be treated by draining any severe lumps with a needle.  If the bumps become a chronic problem, disappearing only to show up again later, they may require minor surgery as a long term fix.  I hope this helps anyone who finds this thread online while searching for info on what's happening to their mouths like I did, but please remember that it's always a good idea to see a physician with any kind of lasting malady when possible.

This just happened to me the other day, the roof of my mouth feels rough toward the back, recently noticed my lower lip feels like this too. Can't think of anything that might have triggered it, it doesn't hurt it just feels annoying. Did anybody ever get follow up on this?
