Hey guys. There are a couple possible causes for this kind of symptom.

1- If you have used "Freezing" when getting cavity done or similar problem in the past

2- Excessive amounts of sugar

If it continues for more than a few weeks, consult your doctor or dentist.

My wife and I both turned up with this odd painless gritty feeling in our mouths. Mine is mostly under the tongue and on the inside lower gums. I vigorously rubbed the inside of my gums (where the bone supports it) with a clean cotton cloth and the grittiness went away and has largely stayed away in that area. My wife says her's is a little more widespread. It seems to have showed up almost instantly (for me) after eating a very salty beef stew and rice dish 4 or 5 days ago. It felt like it stuck to my mouth and wouldn't rinse out. I was drinking beer with it, wife was drinking soda. We are also on vacation in Brasil and regularly drinking their version of diet Coke and Pepsi. I honestly have no idea what has caused it, but with my wife also having it I can only assume its food related in some way. I noticed just about an hour ago that swishing pure black coffee has had a positive effect... go figure.

My family went to Missouri for a vacation at a timeshare, and we also went to a place called Johnson's Shut-ins to swim and play in the water. My son and I both got the grainy feeling under our tongues within 24 hours of the Shut-ins visit. I was thinking we may have been exposed to something that other swimmers had, or a parasitic infection from the water itself. We have now had it for several days and it seems to be spreading slightly to the inside of the lower lip and roof of the mouth, indicating it is something alive and reproducing. We took our food with us from home, and did not really eat anything new, so it is not likely to be food allergies. Have any of the other posters found anything or been to similar places? It is a bit scary to have something unidentifiable after going swimming with hundreds of other people in untreated water. Brings up questions of STD's and other infections that people could have had upstream. Please follow up guys! I especially want to hear from the guy who went to the ENT.

I have had the same grainy texture under my tongue for nearly a week. I have recently started using a new toothpaste though and think it may be the cause. Going to stop using it and see if the symptoms go away. I'm using an Aquafresh Whitening toothpaste.

I am not a dentist, but I get a gritty feeling on the lower part of my teeth and in that area you explained whenever I do not brush my teeth for more than a day or so... I am just saying... I mean, you could try brushing your teeth... Other than that, see your dentist...

Its a build up of tartar behind your teeth, see your dentist and get it removed :)

it is defenitely not tartar as stated above..........i have all the same symptoms as everyone else here.......i picked it up visiting a friends house after drinking from a cup that may have not been washed properly?........within 30 mins i felt my mouth had a burning sensation like my salivary glands were being attacked......the burning continued for weeks and no matter how often i brushed it wouldnt go away (the only relief ive had was from antiseptic cough sweets - but briefly)............my doc said he couldnt see anything and didnt offer to take a swab,etc........ive had the problem for well over 2 yrs now........the burning feeling went away and i was left with the grainy feeling throught my mouth and back towards my throat...... as time has went on i feel it has honestly invaded my whole body systemically......my doc still keeps saying he cant see anything and i have had blood taken a few times for various tests all coming back fine........my skin is now even begining to look dehydrated like im ageing fast.......i drink plenty fluid so dehydration shouldnt be a prob........recently  my ankles have also slightly began to swell after a long day and i occassionally get lower back pain and feel cold alot - i rekon whatever this is - is the cause of my deteriorating symptoms - ie: its now systemic and into my main organs........i have cut back on sugar with limited sucess but it flares back up again............latest thing doc has said is my thyroid is now on the low side and im also going to be tested for addisons disease as its now making me feel like c**p every day - i was also given vit D for 1 month............i cant believe this has gone on for so long and a doc keeps saying he cant find anything - over 2 bloody years (sickening)...........as far as im concerned it started in my mouth like i explained above and has spread.............is it a yeast ,bacteria or fungal? i dont have a clue - my mouth is kept spotless brushing and some mouthwashes make it worse especially flouride or alcohol ones...........oh and another thing is one of my brothers is now saying he has same feeling in his mouth too and the friends whos house i originally visited says he also has it (go figure).............we dont have flouride in drinking water where i stay but we have chlorinated..........im honestly at a loss as to what it is but feel it is severely now affecting my health................and before anyone asks - no i am not a hypocondriac and dont have mental health issues...its really bugging me whater it is and id love answers how to get rid of it for good.

My mom visited and described these symotoms (grainy feeling on insides of lips by teeth and under the tongue). My husband got it a week later.  This week, i have it. Definitely seems catchable and strange theres no information about what seems to be a common problem.

did you ever figure out what it was? I have a bunch of those white specs as well.

This could be from mouthwash or something because I have this problem and my mouthwash is really strong to the point where it hurts to have it in my mouth

if it had little blue specks in the toothpaste then it may be small peices of plastic.. yes plastic that doesnt desolve.. i was reading about it online and they showed pics of the little blue specs under this persons gumline.. hope not, good toothpaste but NO!
