I was diagnosed w/ thorasic-lumbar scoliosis as a teenager. I am now 56. I didn't have the surgery nor any major treatment other than wearing a lift in one shoe and a brace for several years in my teens.
Today, I am seeing a physical therapist for treatment of a pronounced kyphosis. The increased arching of my shoulders and neck are cutting down the area in my chest cavity where my lungs are. It results in more respiratory issues every winter. I am a former smoker and no doubt, that hasn't helped my cause either. My advise...would be to get the surgery when you are young if that is a viable option...don't smoke and if you do, quit now....and develop a high pain threshhold--that's what you have to look forward to.

I am 14 years old, I have a 62 degree curve. At the start I didn't want surgery, my family all thought I should so I thought for 2 months about the pain, I would not think my parent was bad if she said no. She would only be stopping me from having a painful experience. At the moment I am being put to surgery as I gave my answer, I think it will be the right one. If the curve is 40 degrees or above surgery is recommended.

my daughter is 13 and has a progressive "s" curve, the bottom is a 30 degree and the top is a a 20. so she basically have 2 30 degree curves. she was placed in the "spine cor" flexible brace, but it hasn't seemed to help much, and is terribly uncomfortable because she has to wear it 22 hours a day. her physical therapist has reccomend us go to a surgeon that his daughter had which involves the stapling to prevent it from growing anymore...
im not sure aobut it, what should i do.

I am 52, with a s-curve. My parents noticed my left shoulder drooping in kindergarten and I wore a Body cast and Milwaukee Braces all the way through High School. I still suffer with constant back pain. What I found ironic is my family Doctors daughter's curve is much worse then mine ever was, when I asked him why he never had her treated .He replied that for all the info out there it didn't seem to matter what choice you made for your child, they were still going to suffer as an adult.
Hope this changes soon.
