I have this! Medical professionals and other women have no idea what I'm on about when I describe it but it is the worst pain I've ever been in -worse than tooth-ache. I'm currently pregnant (though the pain has been present since I was about 22 and I'm 30 now) so will let you know how labour compares...

I've found that hot water bottles help and hand/pocket warmers that you can get from Pound-shops help but they don't relieve it entirely. The only way I can bare it without crying is by pressing down really hard on my breast(s) with my hands and rubbing my nipples which is obviously pretty embarrassing in public but there's no other way around it.

I really feel for other people who suffer with this.

I have been to many doctors and many specialists and finally my new GP recognised the symptoms....only taken 35 years. I also wanted my nipples removed due to the severity of the pain .
All I can say is if you don't get answers from your doctors you need to change....and finally one that recognised this.
I have put up with many responses from doctors and specialists including blank looks, shoulder shrugs, smirks etc and I can' t help you....and you end up thinking your nuts.
Thank god someone recognised it. I look forward to some relief.

Nipple vasospasm
Vasospasm occurs when blood vessels constrict (or tighten). It can be very painful and is usually worse when you are cold.

Vasospasm may occur in any blood vessels in the body such as in the heart, brain or eyes. Fingers are most commonly affected, a condition known as Raynaud’s phenomenon where your fingers turn white when they are cold. Less commonly, the blood vessels in the nipples are affected, causing pain during, immediately after, or between breastfeeds.

Who does it affect?

This condition is more common among women:

with a family history of Raynaud's phenomenon
who tend to have cold fingers or feet or have ‘poor circulation’
with a low body mass index (i.e. thin people).
Describing nipple vasospasm

You may feel intense nipple pain, which is worse when you are cold. Some women describe the pain as a burning and throbbing.
You may notice the nipple or the tip of the nipple blanches or turns white.
You may notice other colour changes of the nipple. The nipples may turn blue or purple or red before returning to their normal colour.
How long does an attack last?

You may notice the signs and symptoms for a few seconds, minutes or even longer.

How severe is nipple vasospasm?

Nipple vasospasm pain ranges from minor discomfort to severe pain. Some women may feel that the pain is so severe that they are unable to continue breastfeeding.

How to manage nipple vasospasm

Avoid or to reduce exposure to known triggers. These include:

poor attachment (seek advice from your lactation consultant)
nipple damage (e.g. cracked nipple) or an infection (e.g. nipple thrush)
exposing your nipples to cold air
some medications or chemicals may worsen nipple spasm, e.g. nicotine (smoking cigarettes).
Things to try:

Keep your nipples warm. Applying a warm pack may relieve pain immediately.
Wear an extra layer of clothing.
Use ‘breast warmers’, e.g. Flectalon (available from the Australian Breastfeeding Association).
Avoid cold exposure (or sudden temperature changes).
Do not ‘air’ your nipples.
Warm your bathroom before undressing for showers.
If the pain continues, you may consider taking supplements or medication.

Supplements include:

Fish oil capsules (containing essential fatty acids) or evening primrose oil (gamma linoleic) may improve blood vessel relaxation.
Magnesium tablets help to relax the blood vessels. You may take one to two Blackmore's Biomagnesium tablets daily (each tablet is equivalent to 300mg magnesium).
Prescription medication may be appropriate. Contact a lactation consultant or medical professional for more advice.

I have had this happen to me since I was 16 and I feel for all of you it is excruciating! Mine is due to getting very large breasts practically overnight during puberty, and the nipples getting tiny tears from stretching. This trauma leaves them sensitive to cold. What I've learned...... when it starts I'm usually barefoot and my feet are cold. It stops a lot faster if I warm my hands and feet and not even necessarily my nipples.....but my hands and feet must be warm. Also I find my nipples will be dry when it happens so warm up hands and feet and rub lotion over my nipples for about 30 seconds and voila it's gone. When I was younger in school it would happen and for literally HOURS I would be dying and having to endure it. Hope this helps somebody out there.

Hello,
I am 25 I live in the Bay Area, CA we mostly have hot weather but in the mornings and evenings it can get very cold. I have had this problem for a couple months now and It just happened to me again about 30 minutes ago. I am outside at my fiancé at his Nursery so he started a little fire so I can stand in front of it and expose them to the heat but that didn't work so I just jumped in my car and blasted the heater on them but if I am somewhere where I don't have the access to a car heater or a fire or at home, etc. like you said to put it in your mouth and that will make it go away, LOL that is so funny you say that because I can't reach that far to mind so I make my fiancé put his mouth on mine and it's only my left one most the time it does happen to both occasionally but the left one is the one that's just unbearable excruciating pain. And I know that I have this disease as well I have no children although I have been pregnant a few times unfortunately was not able to finish the pregnancies but my right foot big toe is always numb to the point where I cannot feel it at all anymore which really worries me. So all I can suggest is if you have a boyfriend or husband or in my case a fiancée, have them put their mouth around your nipple that hurts and that literally makes the pain go away instantly or within a few minutes and you both will get some pleasure out of it so that's a plus ! So I guess I will not pay all that money to go see a doctor since it sounds like they're not going to be able to help me at all I'll try the fish oil pills/omega. Thank you guys for the help!

I also deal with this terrible pain in my left nipple. I don't know what it is but I just want to share that I have loaded up on hand warmers this past winter and when it starts to bother me I crack open a hand warmer and but it in my bra! It has really really helped me! I hope it brings some relief to you ladies. Although winter is over I'm sure you can order some offline! Hope it helps!

I've had this problem for many years already and I I try to warm them up with anything, I am 34 no kids, I heard about the fish oil capsules and I used them for many a year now they really helped me but I'm not the kind of person that likes to take pills all the time so I let them run out it's been a week with out them and yesterday I felt that terrible pain again, I guess I have to get me some more of them.

My right nipple can feel like it is freezing and the most horrible pain. Only lasts for about 15-20 minutes depending on what I do. I can take a wash cloth run under hot water and hold it against it and it will ease off. If anyone knows please share.

I do the same thing! Hand or toe warmers. Toe warmers work well because they're smaller and they have an adhesive backing which allows them to stick to your bra. I've dealt with this off and on for a few years, but the frequency and intensity have increased dramatically this year. I usually experience this with just my left nipple, but sometimes my right nipple chimes in too. All of the doctors I've seen think I'm exaggerating or imagining this. I feel ridiculous each time I have to explain it to yet another doctor. Like other posters, it brings me to tears, keeps me awake and drives me flipping buggy!

Yes, I've had this issue for years, doctors don't seem to believe me, but the pain is so severe, some days it's too much. I live in California where the weather is not too sever but I just start feeling cold from the inside of my body and I get the pain. Sometime I don't even feel cold on the outside of my body. Raynaud's phenomenon could be a possibility but everything I've read doesn't say anything about the breasts, my hands and feel do get cold easily but I don't feel any pain. It usually takes me about 1 hours to get back to normal and warmed up.
