I have the same problem the pain is about 2 inches from my belly button,on the left side, it seems to be radiating from the skin and my whole stomache itches. I am a 56 year old woman,I had a complete hysterectomy in my 30's so whatever this is with all of us it is NOT gynecological. I am diabetic and I have neuropathy I had to get the shots in my ankles for it last winter. I have had irritable bowel since I was 16 got it under control until a few years ago when I started having gas problems really bad (this all came on gradually) then I started getting the runs really bad, cucumbers would have me rolling on the floor in excruciating pain then the runs. Then this past summer I had stomache pain so bad all I could do was lay in bed. I had a colonoscopy,endoscopy,ultra-sound, then that test where they shoot that stuff that stings into your veins and blood tests which were all normal. So they told me to drink that mild laxative stuff you put in juice every night and the stomache pain stopped but I still get the runs then constipation which I can deal with better than that pain. And now the belly button pain which started a few months ago, it started out very mild and I didn't think much about until this past week when it really started to gradually get worse, it is a stabbing intense pain that stops me in my tracks. There has got to be an explanation for this we are all not crazy. I am so glad I found this website because I thought I had something rare I am glad I am not the only one (although I wish we didn't have it at all). Does anyone have anything similar to any problems I have been plagued with? Anyhow I go to the doctor tomorrow we will see what he has to say. I wish you all luck and I hope some doctor stumbles onto what this is and gives it a name because it is real.

Thanks Ger I'll give it a try because this is getting excruciating when that sharp pain hits. I saw my doctor today and when I told him my symptoms he said "THAT'S BIZZARE" I asked if he had ever had anyone else with this problem and he said no, he can't believe I have all that pain on one side of my belly button and he kept saying stuff about my stomache and I kept telling him it's more on the skin. So he put me on Gabapentin that stuff will put you into outer space, they give it now for pain because it's non-addictive. However when I was driving home today I remembered something my Chiropractor said, I have Siatica, she said a long time ago that that can cause some kind of pain in the stomache area. She's in Florida until after the holidays but I will get in there then. If she tells me this is related to that I will let a message here. Sometimes I think that woman knows more than my medical doctor, that is one smart woman she has always done right by me.
But I will give your suggestions a try I don't drink but my parents have some liquor,I will be cupboard rooting.

Diana (& group)

I thought it was really interesting that you brought up the possibility of siatica (sp?) and/or back problems being related to this piercing stomach pain. I am an athlete who has experienced lower back pain for many years. And now this... Hmmmm.

I haven't had it as frequently as I did when I first posted on this site (exactly a year ago- right after the holidays). I'd like to get on board with this idea, because for nearly a year, I have logged the foods I ate, what activities I participated in, and the date & time that I would experience the pain. No red flags- Nothing ever stood out at me. what a waste of 'research'!

What I will share with you, is that I'll never forget that very first time that feeling struck. One minute I was shopping around, the next, I was doubled over in the grocery store. I thought it was menstrual cramps x100 & for those few minutes, I saw stars! It happened several other times that day, then periodically for the next few weeks... and now, it's a once-in-a-while basis... but every time its always about 2 inches left of the belly button.

I sincerely hope... for all of us... that someone reads this and can shine a little light on this & we can all live & feel a little bit better.

Tara,

Have you ever had sciatica? I will be shocked if when I go to the chiropractor after the holidays and she tells me it's from the back. It would be a relief if it is from the back though, especially since medical doctors have no idea what is wrong with all of us.

sciatica dont think so had the pain in the belly for years but did get sciatica at the age of 38 crippled for about a month got it sorted it some times almost hits me but then i walk it off probably too unfit really. We can rule out the coffee I hate it and never drink it and I don't drink much tea either. I do drink alot of diet soda. Don't eat alot of fruit either. Eggs I eat but not often however I do eat alot of bread I try to stay away from white bread and eat alot of grain bread. Maybe we should try big salad meals because that's about all that's left except for meat.

Good news !!!!Found out what is causing my pain. It's a pinched nerve in my back.I have to go for an MRI next week.My chiropractor put me on the DTS machine today and the pain started to subside.Thank GOD!!!!Maybe at least some of you should check into a chiropractor,it's worth a try.Good luck to you all.

hey, yeah. A bit late but never the less: I get these pains associated with my panic disorder. This is important because it makes me strain in uncomfy positions for a long time, without me noticing. Causes things like foot twitching, and of course, sharp pain on the left side of the navel.

This is a minor muscle injury. Its caused almost universally by poor posture, which is how I always sit. The pain in the back near it is diffuse and harder to pin down, but the one on the torso isnt.

Basically, try this: Lightly touch across the spot where the pain is. If you feel the pain through your skin at this level of contact, it is a strain/bruise almost assuredly. It should give the typical "dull bruise" pain. (The same thing happens with heart-fear related panic; you can tell its not your heart because you touch your rib cage and the extreme pain makes it very obvious its the chest wall.)

Oh, and I dont want to upset the people whove responded but, a pinched nerve isnt what you think it is. Theres no condition called "Pinched Nerve," the word is used for a catch-all for several forms of neuropathy. an inflammed muscle is generally a good bet for causing the pain associate with this state.

I had horrible stomach and digestive issues and used Dr Natura colon cleanse, they have a version for kids but I would use the adult version as the kids one did not do anything for my kids. It was the best thing I ever did for myself. It may help, although it's not cheap, but it's all natural.

I too have the same pain.  Pain on the left abdomen, to the left and below belly button.  It is a sharp pain that comes and goes, near surface, tender to touch, gets worse when pressed on. It is not affected by diet, but strangely enough I feel stress makes it worse.

It is interesting that so many people have had it and there is no consensus on diagnosis.

After months of this pain, I found a good doctor who took this seriously and sent me for some tests. CT and colonoscopy in particular. No diagnosis yet.  Ruled out any tumor, diverticulitis, pancreatatis etc.

I will get tested next by an urologist.  It might be kidney related. (CT showed stone on left kidney). I also suspect umbilical hernia might have a role in it.

I hope everybody who posted here continue to post more and we can find out what's the matter really.

HI, I had similar problems as your daughter a few years ago where I felt like I could barely move at time because of the nausea and I though I would puke anytime I ate anything. The dr thought it was endometriosis but by having exploratory surgery it was caused by a ruptured ovarian cyst where the fluid stayed inside my body. As soon as I woke up from surgery I felt back to normal (just in pain from incision site). Numerous blood tests, ultrasounds, cat scans, etc couldn't get an answer for me and I've had other friends with similar problems that all comes back to ovarian cysts.

After surgery I thought I'd be fine but turns out cysts kept coming back especially around ovulation time. I take Myomin (a chinese herb) that does wonders and keeps it in check. I was also a vegetarian for a few months and that worked as well but I missed meat too much. Anytime now I have ovarian pain it can start at my belly button and radiate to my back and pelvic area. If you're a female and experiencing this I recommend seeing an OBGYN asap. Hope this helps!
