I have a very sharp pain that occurs under my left ring finger. It only occurs when it is knocked, even very lightly, at just the right spot. When it occurs, it is the most sharp pain ever. I cannot see any visible signs of anything wrong with the nail and am perplexed as to what this is. It doesn't hurt to type and I don't notice a pattern with the weather as others have mentioned. It's making me crazy because I have to be so careful not to hit it. I can't get a diagnosis! Help!

I have been having similar pains one pain is at the base of my left thumb and if I knock the base of my thumb the pain is excruciating that I could sit down and cry. Second pain appears in my right hand third finger, this pain is a shooting pain and shoot right up my arm. It hurts so much that I yelp when it appears. help I want to know should I worry the doctor about it or just ignore it.

Since I can remember, I've had a painful "bruise" on my right middle finger, under the nail-bed by my cuticle. I always just thought it was a nerve too close to the surface. Lately it's really been bothering me, it's shooting pain becoming much more frequent and intolerable.

Thank you to the annonomous person who mentioned Glomus Tumors. I really think this is it. Although I have to be honest, I might just deal with the pain for awhile. Not sure if I like the idea of having my finger nail removed, and waiting 4 months for it to grow back.

If anyone has had a surgical procedure, could you please share your experience?

Many thanks!

Hi there,

Wanted to make an entry as thanks to this web page I was able to self diagnose a Glomus Tumor on my ring finger of my left hand under my nail, I have had this problem for about 20 years it initially started as a small blue spot under my finger nail that ached slightly but over the years has gradually become worse until before Christmas I was experiencing searing pain intermittently that often kept me awake at night and was making me miserable.

Went to see my GP after doing some further research and he was happy to refer me to a hand surgeon. I had an x ray and then MRI to confirm diagnosis. I then had an operation to remove the Tumor, I had a nerve block to in my arm so my whole arm was numb and I was unable to feel anything, the nerve block took about 30 min and then I was in surgery for 30 min, most of my nail was removed to enable the surgeon to get to the Tumor. I had a big dressing on my finger and it took about 4 hours for the feeling to come back, I was given a sling to wear for a couple of days. The post op pain was nothing compared to the pain I used to get from the Tumor. Had the dressing checked after a week and changed and was then able to return to work. As I am a nurse I had to be non clinical for a further week until my wound had healed enough for me to be able to wash my handy regularly with out a problem.

Now about 3 weeks post op, all healing well, so glad I sorted this out, to have no more pain is a great feeling, hope this helps others

The pain in my right pinkie has completely stopped since the surgery, and the recovery of about 4-5 weeks.  During the cold days of winter I found myself protecting the finger as I always had, but the pain never came.  A normal-looking nail has even started growing back.  The out patient surgery itself took about an hour.  I had a local anesthesia in my hand and a mild sedative that made me sleep through the whole thing.  My surgeon had never done a glomus removal---I found out afterward---but did a great job.  He confirmed with a pathologist that the tumor was indeed a glomus.  I keep waiting for it to return but it hasn't happened yet, and I'm hoping it won't.  The recovery was not without some pain, but was a piece of cake compared to what the tumor itself caused.

I am so happy to recommend this surgery to anyone with a glomus and am so thankful to "anonymous 6/5/09".  Whoever you are, you have my eternal best wishes and respect.

Thanks so much for all your testimonies here!  I've been suffering for 12 years with pain in my thumb.  It started, as many of you said, intermittently, mostly with cold.  Then it was always with cold and whenever I accidentally bumped it.  Over the past couple years the pain has become more constant, at times keeping me up at night.  When my thumb is bumped the pain is so unbelievably excruciating I would want to just cry.  My GP, shrugged off my pain, saying ".. I have pain too..".  I even suggested at one point that perhaps I had a Glomus Tumor and he shrugged it off.  I saw a rhuematologist today and she sent me for xrays and called this evening to tell me the results.  She is scheduling an mri with contrast to confirm.  I want to cry with Joy, and cry because of all the years I've been questioning this and noone knew what was wrong with me!

I had surgery for a glomus tumor in January.  He went in and couldn't find it.  He took out something and said I don't know if I got it or not. You'll know when the numbness wears off.  The next morning to my horror,  the pain came back when cold.  I called him. He has made me wait 3 months to let it heal and then "if it is still bothering you, call me, we'll have to do another MRI and surgery."  Please before surgery, discuss this with your surgeon. Make sure you mark a spot on finger that it hurts.  He didn't tell me it would be hard to identify when he got in there and also afterwards, was defensive, saying I went in exactly where you told me, but he didn't. He made a cut on the side and told me he was going in that way so as not to destroy my nail permanently.  He told me then it probably wouldn't bother me much this summer and if I wanted to wait til fall to see how bad it was, I could call him then.  Well, now that it's hot, it hurts when I go inside instead of outside, because of the air conditioners everywhere.  Now I need another MRI and surgery and had to pay for the first one, even though I got no relief.  Please discuss this before surgery!!

I had excruciating pain in my left middle finger upon contact for 7 years.  Never had any visual signs from the skin or nail bed.  Finally, after seeing a specialist and having an MRI, I was diagnosed with a glomus tumor.  Had surgery last week to remove the 3mm tumor from under the start of my nail bed.  I was told they take on average 6 years to diagnose properly because they are rare and slow growing.  I wish I had pushed the issue to see a specialist years ago.  Hope this helps someone out there.

I had surgery for a glomus tumor at the base of the nail of my middle finger two weeks ago.  Initially all pain was gone but now I have sudden stabbing pains in my finger, and in the last couple of days, the pain is starting to radiate down my finger, into my wrist (which was a problem before) with any movement of the affected finger.  The doctor did get the tumor.  She showed it to me.  The good thing is that after twelve years, my finger/hand is no longer sensitive to cold - and hot.  Yes, in the last year or so, I had begun to be sensitive to hot as well, and humidity.  I couldn't even wash my dishes in as hot a water as I used to.  I have not been back to the doctor, I have an appointment in about a week and a half.

My question - when those of you who have had the surgery speak of pain afterward, is this the type of pain you experienced?

Hi dmf326,

I have had the same pain for the last 15 years in my left thumb. I went and saw hand surgeons and no help. They took MRI, X-rays and nothing was there. They keep treating this as a silly issue. No respect for my small injured thumb. I am not sure what to do. Every now and then this pain comes and it kills me. It sends a throbbing, sharp pulsating pain which makes me feel that I should cut the nerve myself. I can pinpoint the where the pain is. It is running parallel to the fingers, just less than a 5 mm in length. What is this? I am not sure if Glomus tumor can hide the pain for so many days and start aching once in every week or randomly? Can anyone help me? I need the help so bad and I am crying as I type this.

If its a glomus tumor like mine was yes it gets worse. In the beginning i just noticed it when it got cold, but it wasn't intolerable. As time went on, it just got worse. It didn't even have to be extremely cold. Woke me up seven or eight times a night hurting so bad I woke up crying. Had to get up and go run warm water on it to get it to stop. Now after my surgery, (which they didn't get the tumor), it doesn't wake me at night. It onl y hurts when it gets cold. Even all summer, the minute I walk into an airconditioned store or restaurant, its excruciating!
