singulair 10 mg possible side effect

About a year ago, I began to have low platelets and eventually was diagnosed with ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura).  My platelets dropped down into the single digits where I was having to have treatments and transfusions.  At the time that they first dropped, I was taking singulair.  I was told to quit taking it because it COULD cause low platelets.  I was told this by my regular doctor and dermatologist that it was definitely a problem.  I quit taking it after that.  I went to the hematologist on Friday and was told to go ahead and start taking it again.  I have decided NOT to take it again though as I have read positive information that it can lead to low platelets.  Since I had my spleen removed, I am uncomfortable taking anything that has a 1 in 1000 chance of causing the same problem and at that point point I only have the option of strong drugs that did nothing for my prior to my splenectomy.  I would get off of it and reconsider if you have low platelets!

I was on Singulair when my platelete count went to near nil, and I was diagnosed with ITP. My pulmonary physician had prescribed it and a few other nasal sprays and pills to try and assist with my non-allergic rhinitis. I recall also having a severe sore throat just before having ITP, so it's not for certain that it was the drugs, a viral issue, or a combination of both that might have knocked my immune system out of balance. Once I suspected that something as amiss, I headed to my primary care physician who had me immediately admitted to the hospital (I had the tiny red spots on my legs, and was lightly all day from a simple face shave). I was treated by a great doctor who placed me on corticosteroids (during and after the hospital stay where I received immunoglobulin). Visits to the doctor lasted a few years, with each new appointment being twice as far into the future until the conclusion was that all was fine again. I was certainly concerned at the thought of having to have a Spleenectomy, and at the thought of not being around for my family. Singulair is off of my list, and honestly, take as few medicines as possible. I'd rather live with a stuffy nose than to get ITP again, have a hospital stay, or pass away. Best wishes.
