Hello! I have many members of my family that fight cancer. My mother says it may be genetic and I am always doing regular six-months check up at my doctor to be safe. I also examine the lymph nodes myself at least once in two months. But, I am not sure if I am doing this examination properly. I have just examined them and I think some of them are swollen. What is the size of the lymph nodes with lymphoma?
Hello! When you examine your lymph nodes you should check your neck, underarm, and groin in order to identify the mass, appearance and tenderness of the lymph nodes. Normal lymph nodes should be under ½ inch in mass, appears smooth, and un-tender. Infected lymph nodes are around 1 inch and their tinny enlargement and softness means they are defeating the infection. It the lymph nodes are over 2 inches and tendered and this is the time when the doctor should be contacted. Also, it is important if they are fixed or movable. If the lymph nodes are swollen due to an infection and they do not decrease in size despite the use of antibiotics they should be investigated. But, since you don’t have any other symptoms as chills, unexplained weight loss, night sweats and lack of energy I don’t think there is a reason for you to be worried so much. But, if you are too concerned you can do a simple blood lab work just to feel better.
