I smell smoke that is not there. I have searched for answers, however, seems like lots of people have this problem, but there are no ANSWERS.
Can you please give some insight on this.

I think the smoke is there, other people cannot smell it but you can. I am assuming you are a non-smoker like me. I can smell tobacco smoke originating from several city blocks away when the wind is blowing my way. I can always smell tobacco smoke when other people can't. Non-smokers like me often have a much keener sense of smell than smokers. For me, it is a survival strategy, because tobacco smoke makes me sick.
I agree that non-smokers seem to have a much better sense of smell than smokers...if only because they've had less pollution to deal with over time...
However, I find smokers become highly offended if we point out that we can smell them, even if they can't!
Just this last week, I stepped into a hotel elevator, and found that a smoker attempted to crowd into the car with us. She exhaled a very smokey breath and it took everything I could not to eject her from the car at the first stop.
Fortunately, it was our stop, so we fled!
In answer to the first question, yes, you could smell it when it wasn't present, especially if you have a mild infection in the sinus. I find whenever I have a slight migrane or a cold or iritation to the nasal sinus, I can REALLY smell things that others cannot.

I was smelling phantom cigarette smoke for about two months. Turns out my microwave oven, mounted at head level in my kitchen (Thermadore) was leaking microwaves like crazy. The tip of the leakage was it would wipe out my WIFI and my neighbors WIFI whenever I operated it. Basically, my frontal lobe was getting cooked. Eliminated this problem, and the phantom smoke went away within days.
I smell the same phantom smoke. I think it's due to wifi/5G. When I'm not on my computer for a couple of days, like on the weekend, the smell goes away. I always thought that we were being cooked slowly.
