I am so happy to have found this site!!!!!! Like everyone else I was embarrassed and thought it was only me. I normally get a sore throat and then notice them. I brush often and always chew gum because I feel so self conscious. I know when they come out they REALLY stink, but do you guys really think they make our breath stink all the time....... :'( I really really hope not. I DO not drink milk, so I know that is not the cause of this problem.

..Unbelievable... i ad these as a kid, and they are the worlds worst, sometimes they be loads of small 1's and sometimes i'd nearly choke , and they would be huge, like lots of others, i dont drink much milk or red meat, i really dont think they ever go away unless u av yr tonsils out as i did, and low + behold, never seen 1 ever again.. Untill a year ago, when my son poor dab, screamed from the bathroom , to come and look, and to my amazement, he bloody had them , how uncanny is that.. so tonsils out for him i think.... there really is no other cure....... i ad holes + holes in my tonsils, the hospital were amazed , i'd been using pins, needles anything and done a lot of damage by doing so, but it was the only way.. Horrid things they are, i feel so sorry for my boy, he only 11 bless....

I think the person who mentioned it could be from eating melted cheese may be on to something. Last night was the first time i had cheese in ages and today i have the problem of these things in the back of my throat. Does this seem likely to any others? How about the people who don't drink milk... do you eat cheese?

I recall first noticing these white chunks when I was eleven years old. I used hydrogen peroxide on a cotton swab to remove them. Then I would gargle with listerine, hydrogen peroxide, with an aspirin. For many years this was very smelly. When I was in my early twenties, I had my tonsils removed. Did this help? No. The smell subsided from the horrible to no smell at all. I am now 62 years old and still have them. I had a respite of 2 to 3 years, but now they are back. Nowdays, I remove them by using a swab inserted in a hole just below the "throat chesse" hole. The swab is inserted as far as possible. Pressure is applied upwards from the back and moving towards the front. The chunk comes out successfully. Now just recently (like now and for this week), a remnant remains and gets hard. I have had to use a pointed plastic instrument (a plastic throw-away dental floss device) to insert into the hole to dislodge the "chunk". There seems to be a remaining remnant. Sometimes creating a throat "wretching" action, which is similar to the action that occurs when you vomit, helps bring deeper "remnants" this "white junk" out of the cavity. I have never gotten any answers from doctors, so I no longer ask them. Just another note, the oldest of my three sons suffers from this mysterious unnamed malady. Is there a genetic component? Who knows. We are all in this without any help or interest at all from the medical profession. At this point in my life, I am hoping that this is characteristic of people who live to be over 100 years old. I have never heard of a doctor who lived to be a hundred, so since doctors don't live to be a hundred, their jealosy of us prevents them from helping us!

i had these since i was a child and like many of you had no answer to it. i started to just stick my finger down my throat and using an upward motion i just scrap the tonsilloliths off. sizes range from small specs to pieces as large as a pea. the big onesvary in color too, anywhere from darkish green to yellow....pretty nasty but the stuff comes and goes. when i look and touch my tonsils now i can def feel crevices and small craters where these things are accumulating...

I'm a little confused here, I've had these small Tonsillolith like things coming out of my mouth since I can remember but I got my tonsils removed when I was 3. Can Tonsillolith exist without the tonsils?

I have been getting these white stinky balls in the right side of my throat, I can't seem to cough them out. I don't wanna stick anything in there either, incase I gag a big ball off it. Today when I woke up, the curd just rolled onto my tongue, omg the smell was rancid. I had to show my gf she almost puked. I do drink a lot of milk, maybe just stop drinking milk, although love milk. I can still feel somthing in there though, I hope it goes away. Good luck to all stinky ball friends.

Just like the rest of you I thought I was alone in this, until google enlightened me. I have found that a Q-tip and flashlight are useful in removing these. Sometimes pushing a little right in front and above the white spot helps encourage it out. They drive me nuts, especially that feeling that something is stuck in my throat. Too bad there isn't an easy fix.

I honestly believe it has something to do with stomach acid. Food digesting in the gut creeps up during the night when we sleep. I have had there and associate with stomach acid. It is very nasty in the gut.

I can tell you that I have been getting the tonsilloliths for as long as I can remember. I have a big crypt in my right tonsil that seems to gather most of the bacteria. I have to "clean" it out once or twice a week. I have become fairly proficient at it, using a q-tip and a mirror.
I'm not sure if any particular food causes it as I have a varied diet and I don't drink milk. My guess is that starchy foods, like rice, potatoes, or bread, would contribute more because of the debris they leave behind. The smell almost reminds me of plaque, albeit stronger. That would make sense if the same bacteria that produces plaque was in the crypt, maybe the tonsillolith is just accumulated, dense plaque. Any thoughts?

I always seem to get mine when I start to have a sore throat, often from eating too many sugary things. I think, at least for me, candy is a big cause of tonsilloliths

What about when you vomit... I did the other day and there were about 30 of these things in the sink. The smell was exactly the same. I haven't had one since though

My understanding is that thes tonsolliths are caused by an accumulation of various matter: dead skin cells, tiny food particles, mucous, bacteria and so on. They are able to accumulate in the tonsils because often the surface is pitted with furrows and crypts, which provide the perfect place for these disgusting lumps to fester and grow. Moist, dark, and warm - the tonsil crypts are an ideal home!! YUCK!!
I have suffered with these pretty much all my life, from around the age of 6 or 7. For years I have manually extracted them using pressure from a finger and an upward movement to push them out. However, it was only a temporary fix, and i was constantly worried about bad breath. I have a fastidious oral hygiene routine and *still* I could smell these on my breath. It was incredibly embarrasing and just outright gross!!
The only permenant cure is to have the tonsils removed. I have read a few posts where people still have problems with these despite having a tonsellectomy, but I would imagine they are (unforunately for them) rare cases. Most people who have their tonsils out, especially nowadays with the current methods, will not suffer with this smelly affliction ever again.
I am 2 days post Op as I write this (seems I have written several posts tonight ont he same topic! LOL!!) - and although I am currently in a lot of pain and have many more days of pain to go, I am thrilled to think I will never have one of those pieces of poo in my mouth ever again!! :-D
