KatieMomma, sorry to say that taking your tonsils out doesn't get rid of these. If you don't believe me, ask your doctor.

I had this once and while for about 3 years (from 17 till 20 years old), but lately it happens to happen much more often. It often comes out after sneezing xD.

I hardly have any milk/cheese, but drinking a lot of water helps. But it really has to be a loooooooot of water before you notice an effect..2 extra cups of water a day won't do much. Very strong mouthwash helps as well..just gurgle it ^^.

thanks to everyone who has posted. This is the 1st site that appeared when I googled "smelly yellow chunks on tonsils" & yes, it's also good to realise I'm probably not terminally ill!

Having read everyone's comments, I have a strong theory....1st to set the scene: I've had a long history of bringing up phlegm all my life (various colours & textures, but since we're all being so open..... o.O ) and have always loved my dairy & was brought up like most of us on meat. Now that I have been getting into macrobiotics for a while (which in a nutshell is a lifestyle/diet direction based on whole grains/organic veggies/balance in all areas of life) & so have pretty much stopped eating meat for the last few months (apart from seafood) & have cut right back on dairy, except the occasional bit of cheese or tea with milk. So when I realised this weird feeling in my throat was actually smelly chunks i could SEE on my tonsils, I figured it's probably because I'd cut back on dairy (as I've always suspected it aggravated the phlegm) & that my body was getting rid of old toxins.

But now am wondering if it's cutting out dairy COMBINED with stopping meat. Which I'm thinking is still my body's way of processing the old stagnant food, since it's generally accepted that animal products are harder for the body to process & digest & therefore often accumulate as excesses in different ways. So it makes sense to me that by stopping these foods, my body finally has a chance to let the old stuff out. (Like when you get sick when you finally get time to stop & relax.)

I know for me, while it may be common, I certainly don't think it's 'normal' or that a completely totally healthy person who has been eating & living really well for a long period of time would have these smelly chunks happening, surely? Wouldn't you agree??

I intuitively know that for me at least, cutting out my tonsils wouldn't be a solution. Maybe temporarily it would stop them, becuase they wouldn't have a place to show themselves, so where would the bacteria stuff go then? Pretty sure it doesn't just magically go away! I think if you're still doing the same things, your body would have to accumulate excess in another area of your body, if not your tonsils. Plus, isn't the historical purpose of tonsils thought to be for immunity or something to help your body anyway? I just think cutting out your tonsils because you have tonsolillths would be the equivalent of cutting off your head because you have zits. %-)

Anyway, this has all been very educational & I hope we all get to the root of the cause to stay healthy & fresh breathed soon!

(Would love to hear more from people that have posted on whether they eat meat/dairy to test my theory.) Thanks

i have had these for years too! but they completely vanished when i stopped eating dairy and wheat the 2 things that i was told i was intollerant too - they came back when i couldn't stop eating dairy/wheat. i think they are a sign you have low immunity.

not everyone is intollerant to milk/wheat but if you find out what you are intollerant too and manage to stop consuming it then i think this problem will vanish.

i am blood group o and i am intollerant to milk and wheat-myashma improved when i went off these 2 things aswell.if i eat them i have a contant nasal drip aswell.

the book'blood group diet' can indicate what you are intolerant too and also food sensitivity testing can help too.

Hope that helps, don't put up with this as it shows your immunity is impared and you could get other infections etc

love and light x

I got my tonsils removed two days ago and am in severe pain... but its sooo worth it. Id rather take a sore throat and constipation from codeine over tonsil stones any day. To those of you who want a real clear legit answer to how these form i will tell you exactly what my doctor told me. My doctor said tonsil stones form from milk, bread, cheese, and any sort of yeast or dairy. The food particles slide in the tonsil crypts and mucous slides over top of them and THAT is when the white blood cells begin to attack the food chunks. My doctor said when he grabbed my tonsil to cauterize / cut it, about 12 chunks flew out of every hole. He assured me they will not be returning. He also did tell me a lot of doctors will not remove tonsils that are infected. Good luck to anyone trying to get rid of these, it's not happening without some sort of surgery.

So tell me who your doctor is!  I've told many doctors, and none seem to know what I'm talking about.  They think I am crazy.  But mine are really bad and I can see like 4 or 5 in there at a time constantly and I can't always get them out.  Who is this wonder doctor who knows what's going on?!  :)  lol

Hi there i have been reading your blog and have to agree fully with what you say i have had these all my life and as a result find it hard to keep friends because they think i must have poor heigine or something as i have bad breath from this proble. I have started cutting out all dairy and substansially reducing the amount of meat i eat. Can i ask do you still get these white curds since you have changed your diet? I am still thinking of getting my tonsills out.

Omg this makes me feel better. I'm 13 and i've had them for about a year or 2. I hate them, i got one today, and i ended up puking, trying to get it out. I don't notice myself getting bad breathe, though? ;o and i guess i don't get them too often, but enough. And i don't drink alot of milk, because i don't like milk. Huh. I hope they go away, do i have a chance? One time i actually got a reeeally big chunck, but it was like a bunch squished together. I always find myself puking from them, it suuuuuuuucks.

That is so crazy. For some odd reason I didnt think about googling this until now and whamo lots of others get them. I typically use my pinkie and push on  the sides of my tonsils every other week or so. This usually forces them out. It is really scary

about the size of these things sometimes!

Hopefully this helps someone... I have had these when I was younger, they would pop out while I'm talking etc... So recently I noticed a strange odor and taste in my mouth and I noticed people distancing themselves during converstation.. So I realized OMG I have bad breath!! I finally looked at my throat and sure enough, a white spot was right there!! I stuck a Qtip in and it had that odor I rememberd from my teen years.. it smells like the stuff that comes out of a pimple, and plaque, NASTY!! I found this thread and decided to spray the affected area with chloraseptic and gargle with warm salt water.. at first the thing dissapeared, it went back in I guess it wasn't ready to make it's exit! I waited about twenty min and repeated, it poked out a little and this time I coughed a little and a small piece came out.. I sprayed and gargled again and this time I coughed really hard and a big NASTY glob came out!! I still feel like it's more in there but I think I got the immediate stink out!! Definitly gonna step up my oral regimine and practice having a NICE not NASTY mouth..

I get those tonsil stones too.  I think it's natural to try to figure out what is happening with our own body and we do our own investigation like squeezing it to see what it is or smelling it.  The first time I saw it, I thought I had strep throat, because it was a white bump in my throat, but when I coughed one up, I did some investigation to find out what came out of my mouth.  Was it food?  i squished it and it was like teeth plaque.  I then smelled it and it was like bad breath.

When I feel a soar throat coming on, most likely, it's a tonsil stone that needs to come out.  I use a Q-Tip and push the tonsil, so it can pop out.  Then I take the soft part of the Q-Tip off, so I can dig it out.

The solution that works for me is a hydrogen peroxide mouth rinse or moth swab.  Mix half water and half hydrogen peroxide and gargle.  Also, by wetting a Q-Tip and adding Hydrogen Peroxide to it, you can swab the tonsil area, which causes it to go in the nooks and crannies.  Hydrogen peroxide eat away dead skin cells.  When it foams up, it is eliminating the dead cells.
