I am 20 years old and have had a sore throat for many years ranging back to when i was at least 16 years old. I cannot eat anything cold like ice cream, cold drinks you buy from cinema or shops, as well as ketchup and oily foods. If I do swallow these foods I get phlegm in the throat it gets very sore and hurts. My tonsils feel very sore where I can touch the middle of both the right and left side of my throat of which when i touch it feels bruised and hurts when touched. I have been to the doctors many times, I've had many antibiotics, paracetamol's and allergy medicine, all of which have failed to make any difference. I've seen a thyroid expert who says it has nothing to do with my thyroid glands, then i went to the hospital and had a barium's swallow test for my throat, again nothing was found. Thus i still have my throat problem and doctors can't find anything yet, what should I do I really cant eat drink anything cold at all.
Hi there-
So sorry to hear about your problem. I have a similar prob although I have many more symptoms. In Sept of last year I started to have a tight feeling in my throat which I thought was an allergic reaction. After benedryl and doc appts they said I had strep throat which was causing the tightness. At that time there was no pain, I just felt like my throat was swollen and tight when I would swallow. It hasn't went away yet! And I have developed, over the past view months that same feeling you have. I cannot eat many foods...especially ketchup, apple juice, or cold drinks...ice cream...etc. All those things make my throat feel even more tight, swollen and irritated. Almost like I suddenly have a major sore throat or sickness come on at once...just from eating or drinking those things! It's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen!!!! Every time I drink I feel like mucus and maybe even some of the liquid gets stuck in my throat. I have lots of thick saliva I will spit out most of the time. Like you, I have had tons of tests, seen tons of docs, and the best thing they can say to me is that maybe it's nerve damage. And maybe it's muscle dysfunction. All sounds a bit sketchy to me because they can't find the problem!!! Those are things they cannot PROVE are the issue. But since they can't figure anything else out, they just tell me thats what it must be and they can't really help me:( So everyday is a struggle for me. I do hope that when you are NOT eating these foods you do have relief? I sure hope so. For me, these foods make it worse, but even without eating them I still have tightness and lump in my throat. I belch so much too...and I don't have reflux...been tested for that as at first that is what all the ENT swore I had...I knew I didn't and the test proved it!!! I don't get relief. I wake up like this and go to bed like this. It's been a major struggle just to get to the point where I don't feel like I am going to die from my throat closing on me. Now when it's the worse I just lay there and pray until it eases up some. I'm really sorry I couldn't help you. I do hope that you are able to find the cause and get help for it. No fun to be miserable. I am only 28 and I have two young children. It really gets to you when you feel sick all the time and are unable to drink and eat normally.

Hi thanks for your reply, wow I almost feel lucky although my throat is bad you seem to suffering much more, i can tolerate ketchup etc and do eat it but anything cold is no no. I have a appointment with the hospital on the 25 of may and if they still don't know what's wrong I'm going ask them to refer me to a consultant to maybe take more tests or take tissue from my throat and then they maybe able to see what is actually wrong, have you tried anything like that, I guess you just have to be pushy that's the only time doctors actually do something as i have a friend who had a problem with his sinuses, and persistence was the only reason he got it treated.
