Try to make a long story short. Husband had large testicle and we went to hospital. After many test and visit to urologist was a very enlarged spermatocele cystic. Benign but should have surgery. This day of information cost us a little over $4000 after everyones share, after a few even slightly discounted for instant payment. We asked about scheduling surgery and the cost. Was told again about $4000, plus possible discount for cash.
A friend had recently wound up in hospital for vascular surgery unplanned was told about 6 to 10 thousand. 2 Surgeries later and many complications was almost 200 thousand!
So I asked more questions. More details. The hospital was more like an auto shop rent a stall. They just supplied the space to the surgeons and every person there was an al-la-cart charge. Plus the 'stall and equipment' charge! The base then looked to be more like 8 thousand with only the folks I could think to include to ask. No one wanted to freely volunteer information! He got scared, not of the surgery, the possible cost and cancelled.
We are those folks in the gray areas, the cracks of society. We work very hard 5-6 days a week in a laboring trade, self employed. We own a very small shack, (mostly) and a good second hand vehicle to help support us. We make enough to get by, but not for health insurance. As it is home auto and liability, insurance (to stay barely employed) almost breaks us! We make too much for government help and too little to cover our selves! We've always paid up front. So now if my husband goes in for this surgery he fears we could lose all the little we do have! Which would include being able to make a living! Then we become those people living off the government stuck there!
Is there anywhere in the states that does surgery on an upfront cash this is what it will cost basis? We were once told of a doctor co-op that worked cash only and was discounted up to even 70%.
Otherwise like our dental work, we feel we must resort to going south of the border and finding a bilingual doctor. (Funny they come north to get a deal and we have to go south!) Which will take a couple trips, loss of work, just to check out and find. Which when we live in the upper Midwest it’s a long trip, possible long stay away from home with no income. We don’t want a free ride on the government. Just a fair upfront deal. What the news never says is how very many people are out there like us! Who can not afford the luxury of health. Sorry so long a rant.
