Hey guys, I'm glad other people are feeling the same way I am. I had mono a year ago pretty badly at college. I slept 20 hours a day and lost 10 pounds from not eating. I was also taken to the ER because of spleen pain at the time I was diagnosed and I was drugged up on morphine. A year later and I am still experiencing bad spleen pain on a daily basis whether I'm laying in bed or sitting in class. Today I was able to work out for the first time in a long time and I felt like my spleen ruptured; it cramped so badly I couldn't even sit up straight. The daily stabbing spleen pain is rough and if anyone knows any tips/advice please let me know! P.S. I had an ultra sound and they said everything looked normal.....

So glad to see this post. I had mono for the second time at age 40 in July 2015. Had it for the first time when I was 18. It is now March '16 and I have been dealing with the aching spleen for months again. I had an upper endoscopy, MRI, CT, etc and the only thing that showed was the mildly enlarged spleen. The pain and discomfort Is starting to drive me crazy.

I have a similar issue, only it's when I don't eat good things and sometimes just randomly. I'm thinking it's because I haven't been exercising really, but once I am again I'll see.

You all should read this article that talks about EBV and how it becomes a chronic issue for some. Often misdiagnosed as fibromyalgia.

My daughter was diagnosed with mono on Dec. 18. We're at the 7 week mark today. Her side has been painful since the diagnosis & the doc told us her spleen was enlarged. No activities for about a month. On Jan
16, she had a lot of pain. It went from about a 5 to a 10+ in a matter of minutes. We rushed her to the ER. They ran labs & did an ultrasound. Everything looked good. Followed up w/ pediatrician, who thought it was all GI related. Put her on a laxative (1 day only) & Pepcid. What a joke! She got a bit better, but just this past week, she returned back to dance class & the pain came back. 2 to 10+ in a matter of minutes. Rushed her to the ER again. More blood work. Another ultrasound. Everything ok. ER doc feels that even though her spleen looks ok, activity could flare things up. Could be she's just not ready to go full swing with activities just yet. So.....no activities for another 2 weeks. So.......what is it? GI or spleen? Today, she relaxed & the pain is back. It's always worse toward 6-8 pm. Now I'm getting worried that they're missing something. Anyone?????

Oh my gosh - thank the lord i'm not alone! I have gone to the Doctor multiple times about this, and they have zero answers - I have terrible spleen pain - especially when I'm tired, and I had mono 5 years ago. It has lightened up a bit, but still when i'm tired, out of no where it will feel like a knife is stabbing me in my side.

I even had an upper endoscopy done, and an ultrasound... and they can't tell me anything - how is this possible?

I first had mono when I was 12 and again at 28. The last one was bad. Of corse the docs misdiagnosed 2 times, went to another doc finally diagnosed then ended up at a natural path. Boy what a saviour that was. She too suffers from chronic EBV and she had a supplement regiment that HELPS so much when I am having a bit of a flare up, which I can always tell from spleen pain and lymph node pain in my neck. The suppleness seem to calm things back down. I would really recommend seeing a natural path.

Thank you so much for this post. I have been suffering with this spleen pain after having mono 20 years ago. It was only recently that I put it all together after my mother starting going through splenic lymphoma (which i don't have). I am relieved to see others have the sam experience.

I got Mono during January in my freshman year of High school, and I was gone for almost the whole of second semester. In June of that year, I still struggled with the intense fatigue and swollen spleen. Thats a whole 6 months after diagnosis! I hope that you all find a solution.

I had mono when I was 17. It became a very complicated case of mono and I almost died. (I realize that's not the norm). I developed anemia, jaundice, bronchitis, chronic upper respiratory infections, I got down to 98 pounds (at 5'4")., I slept about 20 hours a day for 3 months and barely ate anything and yes, my spleen was enlarged and sore the entire time. I am now 42. I still feel a soreness/pain under my left ribcage/spleen area when I get sick, rundown, or go out and have a few drinks (rare, but once in a while). Back when I contracted mono (and it still hadn't gone away after 2 months), my docotr told me that I had Chronic fatigue syndrome and would for life. He said I would basically just be more susceptible to fatigue/exhaustion then the average person. He also told me that mono stay inside you forever and that you can sort of 'relapse' back into it if you don't get proper rest/etc. For several YEARS after I ha mono, this happened to me. As I've gotten older, the exhaustion/relapses have diminished significantly, but I still have random times where I feel quite similar to how I did when I had mono. The one thing that definitely has never gone away is the spleen soreness. I'm feeling it right now and I have no idea why, except that 4 days ago, I went out with coworkers and had some cocktails. I was 'hungover' from that for two full days and I didn't even drink that much. My body just can't handle much. This is why I don't smoke (quite in highschool when I got mono) , I have never been into drugs or I drink alcohol much anymore . If I don't get enough sleep I feel like someone beat me with a baseball bat. Anyway, I know this is an older thread, but I thought this info might help someone. Thanks.

Yes! I get this occasionally, though I have never noticed a pattern related to stress or alcohol (or anything, really). Mine puffs up and feels uncomfy as it's too close to my rib cage. I've found (and I don't recommend, it's probably stupid I ever started doing this) that I can suck my stomach muscles in and sort of pop it back where it is supposed to go, and feel immediately better. The puffy never seems to last more than a few hours. Completely bizarre. I had mono when I was 18, and I'm now 43. Happens probably 3-4 times a year. :: shrugs ::

after taking 6-8 weeks off did you return to your activities even after your spleen would start hurting again? I had mono about 9 months ago and took about 5 months off from working out now I'm getting back into to it and my spleen is hurting again should I be worried about rupture still?
