Confused and scared is what it is making me. First to find anything on the internet is making me pull my hair. Tonight was the 3rd time I have seen this pellet/sponge looking thing. The first and second time it was somewhat yellowish looked like a grape. Tonight exact same size but looked like a small baby carrot (orange color). All time same exact size. Tonight I opened it up..... it looked like a sponge or cakelike filling. It had a fatty coating on the outside almost like wax. Nothing like I have eaten today or all week for that matter. Now I have IBS and severe GERD. I have just had a scope go down my stomach. No bacteria nor worms of any sort was found. What was found was my preulcerous state. My stool had been collected and all is cleared as a result (no i had not send in the pellet thing at this time). Do I take glucophage... yes but not time released. Nor do I see these pellets 2 times a day. Its only been 3 times in a few months. I have yet to have a colonscopy done but they are sure my IBS is caused from my gallbladder removal and the preulcerous state my stomach is in.

Insurance has just ran out so I would be able to get the colon scope done. And I am sorry my post is just yet another post to go along with the understanding of yours. However If anyone can come up with a real answer to what it is and not what someone "thinks" it is I would be happy to hear. I wish I would have brought this up to my dr. but since it had only happened twice pior to didnt seem to be a concern until tonight. But I am sure that there is a link here somewhere.

Also does anyone know of a way naturally besides fiber to help IBS symptoms to make it not rule your life? My dr suggested fiber therapy. Its not working anymore as it used to. If not I will have to wait til I get insurance again to get the colonscope thing done.
My mother had something that sounds like these bean things in her stool and they turned out to be something put out by the pancreas. It was due to malignancy and she later passed on. I wouldn't hesitate going to a doctor about them. Best of luck to you all
I went to my second GI Doc and she was not concerned about these things. What interests me is that I also take Glucophage. That would be so great if that was the answer. After my colonoscopy, I will bring in a sample to the doc.
Just a quick note for what it's worth. I had the same objects in my stool and went the whole route with MDs examining the chiclet like object. I was told that it was the leftover carcass of an extended release tablet. So I started watching very closely, and sure enough, the morning after I took a Claritin-D tablet, that chicklet like object would appear in my stool. When I didn't take it, there was nothing in my stool that was like this. Do any of you have similar tales. I now know that this is what caused the thing in my case. You might want to do a study to try and correlate it to extended release pills that you might be taking. And by the way, it doesn't have to be a gelcap. Even normal looking pills can have an invisible coating that will pass through your system without being digested.
If it is the casing of a pill, is your's like the shell of a pea or bean or is it a solid object? Mine are solid rectangular squishy things that float. They are filled with a white substance.

Anyway, I have a dr. appt next Monday and I am taking the samples with me. The last time I had 3 at one time so it's driving me crazy what these are!!!

I will keep everyone posted.

I have heard they have to do with malignancy of either the liver or pancreas but I don't remember which. Be sure to let the people here know as I doubt they are from pills
Hi all -

I was looking for something else when I came across this discussion. Very interesting.

I would say hats off to marybeththemuppet! Her link at:

http://books.google.com/books?id=_naiaUtPQ28C&pg=PA194&lpg=PA194&dq=lima+bean+stool&source=web&ots=8BG0dxGEQ5&sig=-6In0CkcropdpKo8waeeGcfhyRw

is a great place to start. Just because this is written in the context of an infant, it does not mean that this doesn't apply to adults. Print this out somehow and show this to your doctor. You just need to figure out the question "Why would I have problems with casein as an adult", or secondly, "If I don't drink milk, how could this be the case"? However, this sounds like exactly what all of you are describing - and in my opinion is the best place to start.

Here are some facts from reading through the posts:

1. The object with the white center description that is passed in the stool (with slight variations on the shape) is pretty consistent among all of you.
2. This description is not consistent with the "Glucophage" not being digested theory. If it was, then it seems that most of the capsule was not being digested or utilized???

Here are some additional points:

1. Casein, as mentioned in the infant article, is a protein found in milk.

2. It is not just found in milk. It is also in cheese, soy cheese substitutes, energy bars, protein shakes, etc... It is also a food additive found in many other foods, products, or packaged goods to create food consistency.

Casein can be listed as sodium caseinate, calcium caseinate or milk protein. The word non-dairy does not mean the product is a casein-free food. The FDA allows foods containing casein to be labeled "non-dairy."

There are hundreds of other products containing casein. So even if you don't drink milk, chances are casein is somewhere in your cupboard or diet. Start there. I believe you will find your answer.

3. Those of you taking the Glucophage, may coincidentally be messing around with your body's metabolism - as this is one of its side effects. For others that are not taking the Glucophage, perhaps another prescription drug may also be interfering with your digestive system. And if you take no meds, no problem - for some reason or another your body is having difficulty breaking down this protein.

I suggest:

Changing your diet to eliminate any forms of casein in your diet. Try this for a week. Just keep in mind to make sure no casein is in the foods you are eating. I believe that by the end of the week you should no longer see these "bean curds" in your stool. I firmly believe that for whatever reason, your bodies are not breaking down the casein.

I believe that medical doctors are "consultants" - they do not know everything. You know your own body and lifestyle better than anyone. I am surprised that they can't figure this one out??? Did anyone's lab results show the chemical makeup - was casein found?

Please post back and give an update.
I had another thought -

If you have eliminated all casein from your diet, and bean curds are still in the stool - then the casein is in your prescription drug (possibly time released capsules).

When the casein interacts with acid (mostly likely caused by upset stomach from your prescription), it gels up and solidifies in the stomach, possibly then makes it completely through the digestive track undigested.

Let us know if this helps any of you.
Thank you for clarifying even more, the ariticle that marybeththemuppet posted a while back. I always thought that made more sense then anything else. I was completely convinced it wasn't slow release pills. However, the idea that perhaps the slow release pills or other meds might increase the likelyhood of the Casein does make sense!

I thought I would have returned to my doctor before now and I apologize to everyone who is waiting for definate test results from a pahtologist. As I had mentioned before, I took a sample in and they said it wasn't a conclusive result and asked me for more samples. That was fine but I brought 5 of them in a pill bottle that I froze in the freezer thinking it was quanity not quality that was the problem. Ha! Well, they called me and said i needed to pick up a specific container to put them in and I've not been back to the doctor since.

I am really over due a check up so I will make a point of getting the sample done again and mentioning to my doctor to make a note about casein.

Again, thank you for the extra enlightenment!
Casein or time release tablets, they sound pretty harmless to me so why are you all worried about them.
ok not to burst anyone's bubble, What you are talking about is a form of Steatorrhea. That is the result of fat malabsorption. If you are not eating a high fat diet , your problem is bigger the IBS! I know because I have Crohn's. I have had it for 11 years.

Now I want to clarify what I mean. If you have greasy stool, it is loose and you have to go a lot. It can have lumps that look like baby carrots or white beans it can even be as large as a chunk of raw peeled potato. It will have a foul smell float to the top of the water.

Shaden, if your Dr does not know what it is.. Then dear you need a new Dr. You need to be tested for a range of things. I am not saying you have Crohn's. There are other cause. If you google it, you will see all the different things it could be. So everybody that has this.... you really need to find a good GI Dr.

I am letting everybody know because I have been there. We are from Kansas. I did no get the proper diagnosis until I moved to Ohio. In Kansas, I was told It was depression, nerves, my diet then finally IBS. When we got to Ohio it was like a different country. I had a diagnosis within a month. What I did not have was proper treatment for several years. It did a number on my GI track. I had lots of scaring and lost of damage. So if you are having trouble with this and your dr has no idea what it is PLEASE FIND A NEW ONE!

This is my 2 cents worth. I hope everybody feels better soon :-)

Not to burst anyone's bubble - but WildredHead I disagree with your take on this. I believe that your doctor may have diagnosed YOUR condition, but if you carefully read through ALL of the posts, most of the people were discribing a tan, gray, or light brown bean shape with a white center in their stool. It is the same description to what is being described here:

http://books.google.com/books?id=_naiaUtPQ28C&pg=PA194&lpg=PA194&dq=lima+bean+stool&source=web&ots=8BG0dxGEQ5&sig=-6In0CkcropdpKo8waeeGcfhyRw

The one point in which I do agree with is to see another doctor. These doctors that are going for weeks and months without telling them what it is - can not a simple lab test tell them whether it's fat or casein protein? What's the hold-up?

This sounds a little different than your condition if you read carefully. But nevertheless - I would be interested in hearing some results from others on the board.

JUST A SIDE NOTE - keep in mind that IBS is an exclusionary diagnosis. This means that your doctors don't have an answer of what the problem is, so the medical community has come up with a "category" for your symptoms so they can give you comfort, pretend like they know what they are talking about, and so they can prescribe some drugs for it. IBS is not a disease. It’s a functional disorder or a way of just saying that the bowel doesn’t work, or function, correctly. REALLY???
I had my dr. appt yesterday and I took a sample in a baggie. At first she thought it was a pill casing from the glucophage I take. Then as we talked she asked about diet and looked at all the meds I am on. I didn't come away with an answer though. She said it looked like a mucus plug, whatever that is! She asked about me eating prunes or raisins, stuff like that. I told her I haven't eaten anything that looks like that. She told me not to worry about it.

However, I am starting to believe that it is from my diet. I have not been eating healthy since last fall. I've gained weight and my blood sugar numbers are up so I'm thinking it's kinda like the fat absorbing diet pills like Alli and because I am eating wrong and still taking all my meds that some how my body is ridding itself of this gooey fatty substance.

I am going to try and watch my diet more closely and see if dissappear! That's all the information I have for everyone. I know this wasn't much help but it's all I have.

Good luck!
