Great explanation and thank you. One question: Can this also apply to smokeless tobacco? I have quit now for 6 weeks and have off and on as well.

I wanted to give you all some insight and share my experiences in quitting smoking (both tobacco and marijuana) cold turkey at the end of November in 2017. I frequented this thread during my recovery and it helped me through a seriously stressful time of convincing myself I was on my last days of life, which thinking back was really absurd and stupid. Today is February 22 2018 and it's roughly 3+ months since my last cigarette and joint. I smoked cigarettes casually (10 or so a day) for 8/9 years and smoked weed everyday for 2 years before quitting (I live in Amsterdam) and I'm 28 years old.

Like many of you I too suffered extreme lung pains for a long period of time after quitting which is weird because our lungs don't have nerves, anyway roughly about a week after quitting the dreaded withdrawals started and f**k with me it was torture. Everyday I would wake up feeling fatigue and with chest/lung pains. These pains were not necessarily "painful" but more so extremely uncomfortable. I endured these pains and discomfort for nearly 8 weeks after quitting and it was daunting to say the least. Because I quit both vices (weed and tobacco) it was mentally harrowing and the universe really taught me a lesson. I will never abuse my body with these substances ever again and I will never smoke again. You all should commit to the same rule.

My fellow quitters experiencing these pains, don't worry so much and I know that's har because this discomfort is a constant but they will go away, trust me I felt them and they are now gone and eventually when they do, you will feel better but it won't happen overnight, it instead will slowly get better as the weeks being smoke free progress. I was so concerned during my time of recovery over the pains I had that I visited my GP. He ran blood tests and for my peace of mind sent me off to get x-rays done. Everything came back normal and my lungs were healthy and while it was extremely nerve racking doing this, I did feel much better after doing it and even after that the pains and discomfort persisted.

What happens and the reason why some of us get these pains is open for interpretation but from what I learned, your lungs are healing people and the reason it hurts and is uncomfortable is because your body is used to being numb. The tobacco nullifies your pains and paralyzes your lungs cilia (these little hairs the help clean your lungs) and when you stop smoking you're shocking your body and these hairs are coming out of there coma. Body repair mode is not sunshine and lollipops, it's f*****g road burn. Your lungs are resilient organs though, they repair, but first they need to activate themselves again. After you quit they start to receive more oxygen and blood flow, they start to remove all the toxins and this is why it's uncomfortable and painful, your body is fixing itself and it has all this foreign sh*t in it's way which is caused by inhaling this carcinogenic smoke for years.

During my period I picked a couple of methods to help alleviate the discomfort I was feeling and help speed up my recovery. Firstly, I started to go jogging and this helped a hell of a lot. My first run I was ruined but it got better slowly and I got fitter, what started as 1.5km 3 weeks later it was 6km. I increased my water intake and this helped also, every hour I would consume 600ml of water. I would take some over the counter medication called "Flumucil" and this was key to helping me overcome the coughing and mucus that was prevalent. I found that after meals I would have phlegm on my chest and I would cough it up. When I first quit it was like thick resin but it slowly started to go away and now I no longer cough up tar or even cough at all. Warm showers were like morphine to me, they would help with the persistent stitch like pains I was having. I also used heat pads and tiger balm on my chest for a couple of weeks just before the pains and discomfort started to cease to exist.

Anyway, please don't procrastinate and see your GP if you're extremely worried. It's hard to do, but you feel better and you will be ok. Stick it out and just be patient, start working out and going to the gym, start jogging. Jogging is really key here, it helps so much. Eat good healthy foods, eat more when you're hungry the pains will be more abundant. Get your sleep and get outdoors. Mother nature heals you, microbes heal you and keep reminding yourself you're going to be ok. Don't fall into a trap in your brain and think the worst.

Goodluck people! I will give you all an update in another 3 to 6 months when I will be even more healthier and free of the vices that kept me down!

I quit 4mo ago and am doing good.
One of the ways big tabbaco keeps us puffing away is the put special chemicals tha numb our lungs, tbid is why we dont caugh and why we dont feel the pain from the damage smoking causes.
As ur lu gs heal itll get better. But keep in mind it took years to do the damage, its gonna take lots of time to repair.
Dont give up. Report all symptona n worries to dr and dont smoke.

I was encouraged reading this until I reached the bottom where you mention dark matter in your sputum. i've read conflicting posts about the presence of dark sputum. My guess would be that clearing all of the built up tar and toxins in your lungs will periodically produce dark phlegm as my body rids this toxins. Why do you suggest that this wouldn't be a normal part of your lungs healing and expelling tar?

Same here it has been 23 days today and the chest pain is awful. It is really scary because I have heard about people actually getting really sick and having bad side effects after quitting. I came across this web sit and it has a lot of info on it. Anyone who is having these issues know that it will pass.. Here is the link if anyone would like to read what I found. Keep at it and make your life healthier and better. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!
