Dear All,

I have read all your posts with great interest. My knee and ankle swelling is most definitely caused by over-use due to sporting activities etc so have been searching other websites for clues. There appear to be a multitude of knee-related "diseases" so I can imagine that many can be misdiagnosed. I did however find a very informative website that might be of some use to you - its called ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed

In the mean time, cut out acidic foods like cooked tomatoes, curries, chillies, oranges and pineapples. Drinking freshly squeezed lemon juice (yuk) , which is actually alkaline, is a great acid buster for those who suffer from gout. Drink as many lemons as you can handle in a day if the problem is severe. It works like a charm. Also, carbonated drinks destroy cartilage so dont touch them. Doctors don't tell you this because they would rather prescribe drugs.

Good luck and good health,

Niccim

Hi Tonga

Saw another rheumatologist today, but basically he went donw the same route as the first. There are relatively few causes of single joint arthritis, and one of them is as a side effect of psoriasis, so despite the fact that there is no family history of psoriasis and I have no symptoms, they are trying to shoe-horn me into that diagnosis. Do you have any symtpoms of psoriasis, or lower back pain, ankylosing spondylitis is another potential cause of mono-arthritis.

I have some small patches of rough skin which the Dr seemed to think was psoriasis, so I've asked to be referred to a dermatologist to rule them out as I think the doctors are completely going up a blind alley.... When psoriasis is ruled out, maybe they'll actually get that out of their heads and look at all the symptoms....

Hope you improve soon.....

Sounds like a few posts on here have had similar symptoms with different outcomes.

My symptoms were swollen calf, discomfort behind knee, and later, palpable pain upper, inner thigh. Felt like I was squeezing a squash ball behind my knee when I bent at the knees. When I walked, each step felt like the calf was being pumped up like a bicycle tire. I thought it was something to do with the lymph nodes. Boy was I wrong.

Result? Four blood clots in my leg.

Not saying you have that, but don't assume your aches and pains are the result of a workout. Being sedentary, even for a few days, is enough to cause a blood clot, which is why they say to walk around on a long flight.

HelenR No I dont have any of those symptoms, I had an ultra sound to check for blood clots with nothing found. after about a month I am finally walking without crutches. The calf issues finally went away but my knee is still really sore, swollen and havent slept through the night since this all started, but hopefully this goes away too. Doctors dont know saying that i do have some bone particles in the joint but it shouldnt have caused anything like this. Pretty crazy al in all. Hope u r getting better as well.

Hi - glad to hear there is some improvement. I have had a great improvement, but only because of the cortison injection, and that seems to be wearing off already :-(. Someone must have an answer - from this post is seems that there are a few people out there with unexplained swelling and pain - but so far no one is coming back with an answer (apart from blood clots).

I'll keep posting as (hopefully) I get answers!!!

I found this entire post to be very interesting. For a month I've had on and off (mostly on) episodes of urgency and frequency with urination and 2 urinalysis tests later, they still don't know why. Then 3 days ago, my right knee swelled up like a grapefruit for no reason at all, no injury, and no explanation from my docs why I'm having the urinary symptoms or the swelling. Today, the swelling has gone down considerably, and I'm left with a numb yet dull pain in my knee and all the way down into my foot. Sounds like the two could be related, though I don't have eye symptoms besides noticing an itchy feeling, but I just thought they were dry. I can't connect anything to any specific viral or bacterial infection, since I get them both so much, I can't keep track anymore :/

I am going through a situation with my 14 year old daughter. It just started suddenly about 5 days ago, she started complaining of pain in her knees to the point she couldn't bear weight on them without a limp. There is pain in both knees accompanied by swelling that comes and goes{sometimes she wakes up with swollen feet for no apparent reason}. The pain she described to me as an intense cramping in the knees, calf, and sometimes her feet. She also has rapid and intense shaking in her legs when she raises them out straight, although at times this dwindles to a slight to moderate tremor. She has had a moderate tremor in her hands and arms for a couple of years now and her pediatrician had just referred her to a neurologist recently who ran a series of test on her checking for Wilson's disease, all of which came out negative. We though her hand tremors were related to her scoliosis but they ruled that out. The new symptoms with her legs have them completely baffled. She has also been complaining with constant sever headaches and sleeping a lot even for a teenager ,at times she is sleeping over 65% of the day and all night asides from waking periodically with the leg pains. I am really worried and don't know what to do, any suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks

I've been suffering from similar symptoms for 2 years now. I'm 26 years old, and I feel like I'm living in the body of a 80 year old man. And I'm quite frustrated with it. Usually, I'll get the swelling in one knee first. Then, usually as that knee is seemingly getting better, the opposite knee decides to swell up. For a long time, I was thinking that the opposite knee was swelling up because it was compensating for the swollen knee. But it happened every time! Now, my ankles seem to be following the same pattern. It's an absolute nightmare. Last October, for no reason at all, my back/sciatic nerve flared up. It was the worse pain I've ever felt in my life. I'm not sure if the symptoms are related, but I haven't had the back problem again. It was a 4 week recovery process for my back. I wouldn't wish it on anybody.

Saw the doctor today. He drained a ton of fluid from my right knee. Almost immediately when he began draining, he said the fluid color was typical of lyme disease. He is sending the sample in for testing, and I also had blood drawn to see if it's lyme disease. A little scarey, but I'll be glad with a solid diagnosis. At least there's treatment avaliable.

Could any of these conditions possibly be gout?  if so, cherries are good for this condition (atleast six a day).  I know it's sounds strange..but if it's gout, it will help some!

Unfortunately, it's common to frequently urinate after eating so many cherries...but not harmful :)

Good Luck!

My right knee all the way down to my ankle is swollen and I am in alot of pain. When I stand up i feel like I am going to fall over, ( dizzy). I have looked up alot of arthritis's online. Not sure if I have any of them. I have had surgery for torn cartilage in my left knee but this pain and stiffness is completely different. I can barley walk it hurts so bad and as for sleeping I cant do that very well. It hurts to stand and it hurts to sit. I  feel a burning sensation in my knees when I am standing. I am going to the doctor on Monday for a blood test to see if I had any of the arthritis's/ Wish me luck, and god luck to everyone else.

Have any of you with unexplained joint problems had any root canals or other dental work done recently or have amalgam fillings? Google Hal Huggins (books and website). another thought is Lyme disease. I actually came to this site because I woke up with red tender ankle on the inside (medial malleoulus) yesterday. It onlyhurts to walk and there's redness, swelling amd warmth. At first I thought it was a bite but am thinking otherwise. Will go see the Dr tomorrow if not better but hope the story doesn't end up like all the above. Thanks for posting your stories.

I've had a swollen knee and ankle for 2 months now and they dont know whats causing it, my doctor thinks its inflammation in the blood cause i have inflammation but he thinks it'll take a while but it'll go down and my swelling will go. They have removed the fluids and it seems to get better my it still has a little but its taking awhile let me know thanks

After being in a lot of pain for about 6 of the past 12 months (first with my left calf and now with my right), I has yet another ultrasound to define the 'muscle tear' that the GP and physio both reckoned I had. Suprise, suprise, there was no muscle damage, but the briilliant sonographer looked a bit further and found a clot in one of the superficial veins in my calf. Of course now the GP is saying that this is not unusual or dangerous or anything (if it's not unusual how come it has taken a year to diagnose?), and I am on asprin, as well as all the other painkillers. I am not sure why the first two ultrasounds concentrated on the veins in the thigh and didn't bother to look at the calf - it seems a bit short sighted when that was where the pain was coming from.... Anyway, it seems that even if you have had US to look for DVT, there could still be a clot.
