The sun's UV rays damage the DNA of the skin's epidermal cells, triggering enzymes that race to repair the damage. However, these enzymes do not always repair the DNA successfully, and all this unrepaired damage can lead to mutations that increase the risk of skin cancer.
UVA penetrates more deeply and causes more genetic damage in the skin cells where most skin cancers arise. The National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization now designate both UVA and UVB as causes of cancer.
Darker skin does offer greater protection than light skin against sunburn and skin cancer. However, that applies only to people with naturally darker skin. Tanning, like sunburns, attacks the skin's DNA, producing genetic defects that may cause skin cancer.
Many say that tanning within moderation you will be fine, but let’s face it…your still exposing yourself unprotected (b/c I’m sure if you’re going to a tanning salon, you’re not putting on sunscreen ) to UV rays. Over a long period of time it all amounts up to harmful cell damage leading to future problems.
Anyone telling you tanning ,whether indoor/outdoor, unprotected is safe due to moderation, FDA required degrees allowed in the beds or “it’s mimicking the suns natural rays” probably are just workers in a salon and not an educated individual on dermatology. Although it mimicks the sun's rays, those rays are still harmful.
I was advised by my OB not to exceed normal body temp. even when in water. So I wouldn't tan just to be safe. Maybe try that spray tan they have out now until you have the baby.
It really depends on the type of the tanning bed. There are two possible principles – microwaves and strong white light. If tanning bed uses microwaves than you should stop immediately because microwaves cook things from the inside out!!!!!!!! They will easily hurt your baby inside. On the other hand there are tanning beds that you can use even while pregnant but even then you should stop tanning during last 3 months of pregnancy. Also, these tanning beds must me certified so ask staff in tanning salon do they have such beds and ask them to show you certificates for them.
so how long would that take to get a tan on the outside if that were true, completely ridiculous
