I had a total thyroidectomy 2 years ago(Grave's). In fact, I just went for my yearly follow-up this morning. I will be completely honest...and maybe bragging a bit. After reading all of your posts on those who have had a total thyroidectomy...after about 4 -6 moths after my surgery, I feel absolutely normal again. I do not get mood swings, no depression, no anxiety, weight is stable (that took about a year), energy is AWESOME. I still get cold very quickly and have issues keeping warm, but honestly, that is it. I am blown away as to how many of you still have problems. My suggestion to you all, get a second opinion, third opinion, fourth...whatever it takes. I am so sorry you are all going through this and I do hope that each and every one of you get better QUICKLY!!!!

I had a total thyroid removal back in 2005. My levels fluctuate from time to time and it's horrible. It is very difficult for me to lose weight. In the past I was able to lose weight at a great pace but now it's almost 100 times harder to lose each pound. Things have not been the same with the thyroid replacements that I am taking. I have major mood swings, weight gain (big issue), extremely exhaustion, and other things. No one understands how exhausted I get. Trying to explain to others that I am not sleepy my body is just doesn't have any energy what so ever! I was able to accomplish a lot throughout the day but it's a different story these days. Is there anyone who can explain why I am still experiencing all of these issues even with the correct meds? Is it maybe my daily menu needs to change for a healthy thyroid level or do I need to add a vitamin? Please help me! I am so tired of living like this which is very unhappy with this condition...thanks

I was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Upon going to my GP regarding sore mouth ulcers he found a large lump in my throat, this was removed straight away-tested and found it to be cancerous. I am awaiting an op to have the rightone removed also. I have then been advised to have radioactive iodinetherapy around March/April time.
I am not to have any medication as my body needs to be clear due to the upcoming op and therapy.
However I have a problem... I feel like I am dying, Every bone in my body aches, I have zero energy levels, constant flu like symptoms, it hurts to walk, I have had to give up my job, I have a small child to care for and it is extremely difficult to manage.
I have spoken with my Macmillan cancer specialist and she has advisedmore that these symptoms are non thyroid/cancer related!!!
I beg to differ from what I have read in here?! Is there anyone in the same position as me???
i have felt like this for four month now and I am worried as I do not know what us wrong with me when my specialist says that it's none related?? I am extremely ill 5 out of 7 days. If I go outside I catch a cold/flu. If I walk for a short period of time I have to spend a day in bed...this is no life for a 36 year old.
PI am now going bak o my GP for further tests tomorrow to see what he thinks, maybe tests for Lupus or novo virus or cancer has spread elsewhere???
Can anyone help me? Is there anyone out there with the same symptoms as me? Is this just because I have had a thyroid removed, is it because I have cancer?
I would like to believe the cance special list but from reading other people's stories, they are very similar to mine??

Hi there, to all of you (I must say I am so glad to see I am not alone) I had a total thyroid removal done in July 2012, for the first 2-4 weeks following surgery I felt fine...since then it has been a whole different story! OMG I feel like a 90yr old, I am in fact only 34!! I am constantly tired, cold, lethargic, ache all over, I get the most ridiculous cramps all over my body, my hands & feet/legs swell, I have gained just over 2 stone in weight & my thyroxine levels are still not stable, I have little or no appetite most days, I get dizzy for no reason, my skins & scalp is constantly dry! A simple trip to the supermarket is a real task for me nowadays, as for walking the dogs well thats just a no no! my hands & arms hurt so much that I can no longer fasten the strap on my bra!!! I had no choice but to have my thyroid removed as it was choking me! If it is not nescassary for you to have it removed....my advice would be don't!!!But hey ho....I will battle on & certainly will not let it beat me that's for sure!!! Its a bit annoying when my endocrine team kind of poo poo my symptoms as 'the norm' and do not offer much reassurance :-(....oh just to add to my miserable story my vocal chord was damaged during my surgery and my voice is just slightly louder than a whisper, it is actually very tiring trying to talk :-(

I had a total thyroidectomy in October due to nodules on both lobes and and inconclusive biopsy scan. When they tested for the cancer they apparently found that one of my parathyroid glands was in the the piece they tested but they cant tell me about the other parathyroid glands. The nodules were NOT malignant, which is a blessing in itself.
I now take 6 calcium tablets daily and am on 250mg of thyroxine and vitamin D. They still say I may not be on enough thyroxine and I have put on 2 stone since the surgery. I have stopped smoking since the day of surgery and the doctor says that only can count for around half to one stone. The specialist told me that it is very likely they will need to increase the thyroxine again in six weeks as my levels are still so low. It drives me crazy that every time I have a blood test and visit the specialist they tell me my levels are still too low, but they cant put the thyroxine up too much. I have never felt so tired and have no energy to do anything. I work and have two children and my husband works away for weeks on end. I just hope when my levels are right I will start to feel normal again. Also my voice is still affected and that makes me tired just trying to talk normally. I cant sing at all either, which is frustrating when at church.
If there is any way you can avoid this operation please do so, cause nothing is the same since I had it

I had a total thyroidectomy in mar 2012 and it was the worst decision I have ever made in my life. If your nodule is small I would recommend NOT to have the surgery. I went from being active and healthy to waking up every day feeling like a sick person. Headaches, tingly and numb hands and feet, nausea, shaking. I had a small papillary cancer. I read a Japanese study where people with papillary tumors simply check up on them and don't have surgery. Western medicine likes to cut people up and "make them clean." Sometimes I feel like us weaker-willed patients are around to keep overzealous surgeons in business. My thyroidectomy is the most regretful thing I did in my entire life.

I am sorry to hear about your thyroidectomy, but thankful, too. My ENT Dr. wants to do a complete thyroidectomy. I have thyroid nodules and he wants to remove them along with my thyroid. I have been trying to educate myself on this and I have never been diagnosed with these nodules as cancerous. I have read that only if it is cancerous, should this even be considered. I hope to hear other feedback from patients such as yourself and anyone in the professional community. Thank you very much and I wish you the best.

I recently had a thyroidectomy in Dec. of 2012. I also was not worried and had no symptoms and was feeling fine. I was told that I had a 20% chance of developing cancer, so I decided to remove it so I wouldn't have to redo any surgery. I was extremely sluggish weeks after the surgery and realized something was worng when it became to difficult to cook dinner for my two children. My Dr. raised my dosage and started me on vitamin D. I have more energy now, but still not enough to clean and workout; and I'm also falling asleep at work. I hear its critical and difficult to maintain dosage/energy/etc. I was told to take my medication everyday at the same time 30 minutes before eating anything. I find that when people ask questions, I dont have the answer. I am beginning to do my research so that I can understand what is going on with me and so that I can advocate for myself...so that's my advice for you...research, become knowledegable, and advocate for yourself.
