I feel like someone is taking a finger and putting preassure on my throat. if i was a male (which im not) this would be right at the adams apple. I KNOW FOR A FACT IF I GET UPSET OR IF I HAVE NOT GOTTEN ENOUGH SLEEP IT IS WORSE!!!!!! WHEN I EAT SOMETHING IT SEEMS TO RELEAVE IT FOR A SHORT TIME... MY MOM ALSO HAD IT IN HER 30,S A DOCTOR GAVE HER LIQUID PHENABARBITUAL. IT NOW HAS STOPPED FOR HER . SHE JUST STOPPED HAVING IT. I AM 45 AND I BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS SINCE MY 30'S .
I fell like this too. I am 31 and have been felling this tightening and choking feeling in my throat. I also get a dry cough while sleeping. I can feel my heartbeat in my neck when I lay down to sleep. I wish I knew how to correct this.

I have also had this feeling, since about October, where my throat feels like someone has a tight grip around it. i don't have trouble swallowing or breathing, but it's very uncomfortable. I read somewhere that this might be a thyroid problem and that most people have this symptom only at night, but i have been having it at random times throughout the day. it seems to be getting worse by the week, and i'm not sure if its because i'm so stressed out about what the problem could be that its making my throat feel tighter. I'm really concerned that this could be an AIDS related symptom because i had unprotected sex not long before the symptoms started to occur. I was tested for HIV back in december and the results were negative, but i still had this symptom. My OB/GYN told me to be tested again and i'm still waiting on the results. I'm so afraid and not sure what to do and the suspense is killing me. Also, I believe that my family has a history of thyroid problems, so it might be attributed to that but i'm not sure. Has anyone had the same problem or am i going crazy?

If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it, this is such an odd feeling to have on a daily basis

Check with your doctors. I have the same symptoms. My doctors say it is acid reflux. Especially with the coughing.

I am having the same feeling! It's driving me nuts not being able to breathe!! I was hospitalized in 2011 for blood clots in my lungs & legs & at some point I've had a stroke. I'm still symptomatic. Since being hospitalized, I've been diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis. The neurologist who diagnosed this feels certain that I had an arterial dissection. I have a history of SVT. Recently, it's come to my attention that I'm having shortness of breath frequently accompanied with wheezing. I've not had asthma in th past, but yesterday, my internist tested me & now I have asthma as well. I cannot lay on my back without having trouble breathing & a feeling of being choked. It's like the blood doesn't get past my neck. The left side of my neck hurts up into the left side of my neck, & my left eye has seriously blurred vision! My question is... Which diagnosis is right?

Hi --

I am not a doctor, but I am studying to be a nurse practitioner and the first thing that comes to mind - especially for those of you who seem to feel like this at night - is that you may be feeling a consequence of GERD. When lying down at night, it makes it easier for acid from the stomach to make it's way up your esophagus which could lend itself to the choking sensation you feel.

Choking is also a common symptom of someone who is experiencing a panic attack. There are many, many things that could trigger a panic attack or the feeling of a panic attack. Panic attack and GERD can actually sometimes be related- people feel like they are choking from the GERD which can (in some people) result in a panicked feeling.

Asthma can also cause a choking feeling...and, again, GERD can worsen asthma (especially at night).

These are three common reasons  for a choking feeling.  There are many other things that can cause choking feelings (or perhaps shortness of breath) so it is definitely worth your time to visit a health clinic (not a minute clinic...they probably don't have the diagnostics to help you there) or doctors office to get checked out.  But in the meantime, please take some comfort in knowing that the three really common reasons for this feeling are usually fairly easy to manage with medication and maybe some lifestyle changes.
