i'm 19 and just had my tonsils out two days ago. I took my pain meds for one day only because they made me throw up. I haven't taken them since, i've been drinking a lot and eating noodles, eggs and jello. I don't really feel sick anymore, even though swallowing is kind of labored and my throat feels a little bit thick. I hope to be better by the end of the week!!
6 days ago I got my tonsils out and I feel perfectly fine, in fact the day after my surgery I was eating pizza and drinking coca cola. Besides the slight pain in my ears I barely noticed that I had it done at all.
ok here goes, different people heal differently. i am a 21 year old female who had my tonsils taken out 5 days ago, suffered no pain at first could eat basically anything and didnt once feel sick.
i woke up yesterday morning being day 4 feeling so sick that it wasnt funny i havnt eaten in 2 days and am fearing the worst that is still to come. i have this disgusting taste in my mouth and cant talk. my surgeon was really kind and i wouldnt ever say a bad thing about him.. even though i did wake up while still in theater and they hadnt quite finished that was the scaryest thing ever

Listening to people talk about their tonsilectomy surgeries is a lot like listening to all of the birth stories you hear from moms just as you are getting ready to deliver - you always hear the horror stories. I have had two c-sections and one natural delivery that would curl your toes if I told it, but attitude is everything!
I went in for my tonsilectomy one week ago today dismissing everything everyone told me about how aweful it would be. I woke up after it was done feeling pretty decent, drank a ton of water, which really DOES help! The first two days, I felt pretty good, a little more sore on days 3-4. but NOTHING like a full-blown case of strept! JELLO was the absolute best thing to eat, it was cool and smooth going down. By day 5, I was eating mashed potatoes and very small pieces of macaroni. Day six I ate a donut and a juicy hamburger patty - small pieces at a time! Today, Day 7, I am still alittle sore, but I have spent the weekend throwing a birthday party for my son, taking children to soccer try-outs, and going to Father's Day Dinner, so I expect it.
Sinus drainage has been my only problem - I gentley blow my nose, but try really hard not to sneeze.
Overall, it is going very well. There was not a single day that I felt worse than when I had strept throat - no aches and pains all over the body, no fever, chills or sweats. JUST the soar throat!
If you are debating it, please remember, the people who are telling horror stories certainly experienced them, but they are NOT the norm! Go in with a positive attitude, believe that you will do fine, DRINK LOTS OF WATER! Give yourself a few days to totaly rest (get outside help with very young children!), and enjoy the time off work/life with movies, reading, puzzles, video games,or whatever you don,t usually have time to do! :D

i am 24 years old and had my tonsil out 5 days ago. i have had 10 kidney stones in the past and once had my foot on backwards and had emergency surgery. i am not being a baby, but getting my tonsils out has topped them all. this is horrible torture. day three and four was the worse yet. im on day 5 and if i felt anything like i did the past two days i would not be on here typing this. i just want it to get better. i am suppose to go to a important persons in my lifes wedding on saturday which is 10 days past the surgery and right now it doesnt look like i will be able to enjoy the day much. this hurts. my ears feel like they are going to pop off from my head. i hate all the nasty mucus in my mouth. i was puking for a whole day and had nothing in my stomach but it hurt way to bad to eat. when swallowing water i would have to clench my fists cause it hurt so bad. i just want to feel better. i am really going to try to muscle some food down after i take some pain killers and i am going to hope that in the past blogs that i have read, that getting back to eating normal and scratching your throat a little bit will really make me feel better.
good luck to all of you. not trying to scare you but if i had known it was going to be this bad i would have tried to prepare myself better.
p.s. the day of the surgery i went home and thought it was no big deal. ate somewhat normal, cleaned the house a bit, had some company over but then day 3 came and GOOD LUCK!
i really hope that i just had it bad cause i would never want anyone to go thru what i had to go thru

I am on day 4 (got them removed on the 12th so i guess technically day five?) and MAN do I feel your pain! Last night I was in so much pain I woke up at 3 am in tears and freaked out my boyfriend! The day of I was like "pffft, no big deal, this is so freakin easy, I can totally hack this!" Saturday rolls around and I want to freakin DIE! I had mentally prepared myself for the pain but I really didn't think it was going to be THIS bad. Had the nausea (thank god I didn't throw up I wouldn't let myself cause I was too afraid of how much it would hurt), been constipated from all the meds and anethesia and in way too much pain to stand. It's so nice to hear that I'm not a big baby!
Last night I tried to eat mashed potatoes and mac and cheese and man did that go badly. But I will say this: Ice cream (but only if you mix it up into a fosty-ish texture) and ice chips have been a life saver!! OH and mashed potatoes from CHURCH'S CHICKEN are AMAZING!! They are SUPER SMOOTH and whipped so they don't hurt going down!! I just discovered that today! So definitely try that if you're getting sick of soup which I'm sure you have. Also, try diluted gatorade (half gatorade half water) for some reason it's easier to swallow than water?? But hey man, I'm right there with you!!

I am 49 years old and am recovering from getting my tonsils out. It is painful and a slow recovery. I had a very good surgeon that perfomed an out patient surgery. I got there at 8am, prepped with an IV by 10am and ready for the surgery at 10:15am. I remember waking up about 12:30pm with a very sore throat. I was given ice chips, pain meds and released by about 4:30pm to go home. I was warned by my doctor that day 3 would be rough and to set an alarm clock to take my meds on time, even if the pain wasnt too bad. Very good advise!! If you wait till it hurts and then have to wait for the pain meds to kick in, believe me, you will not be a happy camper. So, per advise and my own experience I set my alarm every 4 hours and take meds, I also drink, drink, drink as much as I can. When I look at my throat it kinda freaks me out. It is yellowish in color and very deep holes. The yellow they said is normal but what bothers me, when I look at my throat with a pen light, I see dots of green. Now I did drink grape juice two days ago, but since then I've had lots and lots of water, macaroni and cheese, noodles, soup. My mouth is well washed out, but I still see green specs on each side. One side a bit more than the other. I hope this is nothing to worry about, but if it is still there on Monday, this is Friday, I will go to the doctor to have it checked out. Good luck to everyone and wish you a speedy recovery. Best advise I can give is keep ice water close at hand, a good book and good television to watch to pass the time.
I had heard that day 14 is when the problems stop. Not true. It seemed that this was all over around day 9 and then it seemed to get much worse to my surprise. Even the nurse said i should scale back on pain medicines. But they got it wrong. Days 12 forward have been really bad. I am now on day 14 and the pain has moved around but I can no longer eat noodles and I am back to liquids. It seems it will never end and depression is setting in here on day 14.
i just had my tonsils out the otehr day and it does hurt. but its worth it. im in my 3rd day of recovery. my tonsils were the size of plums. but they have a new type of surgryfor it. they use cold water and radio frequency. i live in schenectedy new york. the doctor i saw was doctor ernest lee. they dont use stitches any more nor have theyin te last 10 years. they cortorize it. it heals faster and less chnce of bleeding. im telling you getting you tonsis out will be they bst thing to appen to you. but u better make sure your insurance pays most of it or all. the surgery can cost up to 20,000$ or more. im 17 by the way. you can eat chicken noddle soup as long as its luke warm not hot or you will bleed.chew alot.
im on day like 7 after and i really cant talk....is this normal?
I am 15 years old and just got my tonsils removed about 9 days ago... The pain was indescribable, and I am now at the point where i feel like the pain is never going to go away...The scabbing is gone on the left side of my throat completely, and there is just a minute amount left on the right side. BUT THE RIGHT SIDE HURTS LIKE HELL (let me tell you that much). I finished my pain medicine in 4 days and the doctor would not prescribe me anymore of it. I layed off and today for the first time I took tylenol extra strength and it worked just as well. and I made a pretty wise decision in my opinion that helped me through the recovery process. The night before when we went shopping for different foods, and drinks for me to consume, I told my parents straight-up I didn't want any ice cream at all, for the remainder of the days recovering...they looked at me like i was crazy, then said "what about what the doctor said?" I then said like a smart ass "screw the doctor"... Instead of the fatty ice cream I bought popsicles and munched on those instead of the dairy death for my recovery. AND GUESS WHAT? I lost 15 pounds in 1 weeks...I went from a 180 to 165. But don't a theory that i didnt process was that even if you eat ice cream your body still needs fat and sugar, and since you can't really eat anything, its one step up...so I'm sure ice cream wouldn't make you gain a significant amount. But all in all, based on the comments i had read I am hoping that soon I will fully recover and eat the foods that i've been lost without since the day of surgery...haha, but goodluck to anyone reading this thats going in for a tonsillectomy, and for the people who already had it... WE DID IT! haha, thanks you guys...

I am a 20 year old female. I have suffered with glandular fever (for 2 years on and off) and most recently tonsillitis, I went to the specialist and he advised taking them out. I am going travelling around Asia in October for 6 months- it wouldnt be good to get it out there!
I have been called by the hospital as there has been a cancellation, the op will be next week.
The thing I am worried about is that I am having my 21st party exactly 3 weeks after the operation. I have got about 150 guests, I have organised all of it and want to be on top form.
Would you say I will be back to normal/ be able to drink, dance eat shout!?!? party all night long??
Please reply asap.
Thanks!!!!

I have been reading posts for folks recovering from tonsilectomy. I am taking care of my daughter (16) who had hers removed (4) days ago. I am wondering what to expect by day 8 as I have read some horrible posts about the experience and recovery. My duaghter had chronic colds/and strep throat since the age of 5. I would have loved to have had this done at a much younger age as I am sure it would have been easier on her, but most pediatricians these days wont approve of it. Now that she is a teenager and "adult" size, her internest said that surgery is really the only way she would get relief. The surgery was an outpatient, and she had a good experience there. The surgery took about 45 minutes under GENERAL anesthesia, and 4 hours in recovery to help manage any pain. She did great! She got (3) shots through IV for pain over the 4 hours and took oral pain meds (Loritab). I think it is key to not be afraid of pain meds, and to administer as directed for the first few days, just to stay on top of the pain. So far, day 3 has been the worst, but from the get go, she has been drinking plenty of fluids, and because she isn't a sweet eater, she really doesn'y like much ice cream, popsicles, etc. I have made her protein shakes with vanilla ice cream, yogurt, bananas, milk to keep her healing, and from day 2 she ate mashed potatoes, cream soups, chicken soup, etc. Now she is eating baked potatoes, sweet potatoes, noodles, chicken salad. The key here is to have someone make things you like, or make them in advance and freeze. I made all homeade soups like Cream of Zuccinni, Cream of Mushroom, Homeade Chicken Alphabet Soup, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Twice Baked Potatoes, Baked Chicken (cut really small) and Rice, etc. The doctor mentioned if you are getting proper nutrition and protein it really speeds up your healing potential. Drinking from the minute you are out of surgery is ULTRA IMPORTANT.. The sooner you do it the better off you will be. The surgery is bad, but dehydration makes you feel horrible..along with the surgery..with dehydration you get vomiting, body aches, head aches, and it intensifies any pain that you may already have. DRINK..>DRINK...>DRINK! I know it hurts, but just do it. My daughter drank a case of water within two days...She thought she was ready to go to the mall by day three (although I didn't let her). I will mention however that she had not missed a dose of pain meds.. Every (4) hours (as directed)we give her pain meds to stay on top of it. There is no need to be in pain or be afraid of taking pain meds (as described by your doctor) for pain. I have had over 20 surgeries in my life, including tonsilectomy and many abdominal and back surgeries, and to me personally staying on top of pain BEFORE it gets out of control is KEY. I know that most say that day 5, 8 or 10 could be the worst and if it is, I will certainly repost to offer any advice I can to those wondering about surgery. The other thing no one told us is that drinks with hi acid (Hawaiian Punch) or salt (Gatorade) actually burned my daughter's throat. She has done best with Cold Bottled Water, Minute Maid Fruit Punch, Apple Juice, Vitamin Water, Iced Tea, Homeade Smoothies. Her favorite that seems to help soothe is: (1) Banana, (1) Scoop Vanilla Ice Cream, (1) Cup Milk, (1) Cup Ice, (2) Scoops (21 grams Protein) of Vanilla Flavored Protein Powder, and (1) Container of Vanilla Yoplait Custard Yogurt.. Blended... It offers lots of vitamins, carbs, and protein... Good Luck and find and excellent doctor. Most of us have insurance, just do the research to find the doctor on your plan with tonsils being his specialty.. A Board Certified Otolarynologist is best for head and neck surgery
Okay, I am 20 years old and I had my tonsils out exactly 1 week ago today as well as a UPPP. All the horror stories I read about these surgeries and the recoveries had me TERRIFIED before I went in. I finally calmed myself down and when I woke up I was in a lot of pain. They only held me overnight because I have other medical issues and they wanted to make sure everything went all right.
That same day I was talking all right, chipper and eating well. I drank lots of fluids and just sort of hung out. Once I was off the pain medications through my IV is when I actually started hurting. Even so it wasn't THAT bad. Popsicles were okay, I was advised against ice cream and I drank tons of water. It wasn't until 2 days ago that it got to the point that I can't talk or swallow without bringing myself to tears. It feels like I have sinus pressure, a slight headache and earaches all the time.
But even so, a week or two of pain and fatigue for all the benefits that will come from this surgery is nothing. I would advise to a protein enriched diet the night before and lots of protein enriched fluids. Heating pads and ice packs for my throat are the greatest gift right now and keeping up on the water is a must! I just thought I'd share in case it would help someone out.

I just had my tonsils out today, and I am so glad that I read the postings on here, the doc gave me lots of pains meds, 4mg Diladuids and 7.5mg Percocets along with Amoxicillin. I know drinking water hurts but it's better then ending up at the ER for an IV to hydrate myself. Cream of Rice has been my friend today, since it's 1/4 cup of rice and one cup of water it helps hydrate, I added some butter and sugar to make it taste good, it goes down really easy, just make sure you drink some water after to wash it all down.
