i got my tonsils removed 9 days ago now. im a everyday pot smoker and i couldn't help but smoke. i started on the 4th day but i got a friend to smoke a bong and blow it through a tube for me. it makes the smoke less harsh and although all the TCH isn't present i still got a nice buzz. then on the 6th day i smoked a bong. bad idea. it felt like my throat was closing up on me. but my advice to anyone is just take small tolks and hold it in as long as possible. it will give u more of a buzz but ull be smokin less.
I smoke about a pack of Parliment menthols a day and about an 8th of nugget every 5-7 days. So when i went in for emergency surgery to get my tonsils taken out I was obviously concerned. I just went in for my post op follow up appt and it turns out i'm doing really really well. Here's what i did. I quit smoking cigs almost entirely. I'd say in the past week I've maybe lite 3 smokes of which I've taken maybe 2-3 puffs each (and I'm normally a pack a day guy). However, I've been smoking weed since the day i got out of the hospital, literally. The trick is (at least that i've found) is half what you smoke and half how you smoke it. First off, you want to make sure that whatever you're smoking out of requires little to no effort to hit. So that means "waterpipes" are totally out, no question. Also i'd say probably stay away from steam rollers, basically anything thats going to give you anything other than a small to medium hit. I've had alot of people recomend vaporizers to me but I've always found that as nice as they can be, its very possible to take too big of a hit and start a coughing fit which is hell. So unless you're fairly experinced with the specific vaporizer you are using, I would advise against it. I recomend a chillum or a smaller pipe. You also want to make sure that the pipe is nice and clean, the easier the peice is to hit, the better it will feel on your throat. Also, J's rolled with clear rolling papers seem to be nice as well. Easy to hit and the paper no paper to irritate your throat / tonsil bed's. The other half of this is what you smoke. I've only been able to smoke nugget, like really top shelf stuff. But this is really just because with my throat being so sensitive, anything else makes me cough which is just about the worse thing that could possibly happen. Seriously, it sucks so bad. I tried hitting my friends schwag (said it was midgrade, the liar) and it felt like napalm on my uvula.
Other than the buzz, the really beneficial thing, I've found, to smoking after a tonsillectomy is the munchies and dry mouth it gives you. Without smoking i have to fight with myself to eat or drink anything either because of the pain brought on by swallowing or simply the fear that i may cause bleeding. But as any doctor will tell you, the really important thing when recovering from this type of procedure is to STAY HYDRATED and green will definitely help motivate you to do just that.
Now I'm sure a doctor or any number of different people will tell you that smoking after surgery is bad or that you should wait at least so long before you do it. And I'm sure those people are correct. It probably would have been safer if i had just stopped smoking. But I was safe about it, kept up on all my medication treatments, and with the help of marijuana, i was able to stick to the diet that my doctor put me on. I couldn't be happier with my results and I would do everything again the exact same way in a heart beat.

I'm on day 3 after surgery - and I smoked today. I don't smoke cigs - but I blaze at least every other day. I've had a really easy time so far compared to some net stories - I'm 27 so thought it would suck. I hear the worst is yet to come but for real - it's not really that bad right now - just keep drinking a lot of fluids - keep my humidifier on - and not talk as much as possible. Other than those limitations - not too far from normal. Trying not to go too wild because I know the meds take the pain away more than I probably realize and I don't wanna mess somethin' up 'cuz I think I'm better off than I am.
Anyway - I toked my lil' bowl a few times - checked the back of my throat between puffs - little puffs - held in as long as possible - but WITHOUT STRAINING, and held an ice cube in my mouth while I hit it to cool the smoke down a little. Not any more irritation than some of the citrus or salt that I have noticed are a bit bothersome in some drinks/soups.
Btw - I'm not exactly brave enough for solids just yet - mashed potatoes seem to even need thinned out to go down. Well - good luck - hope this helps.

I'm on day 6 post-op and this is the first day that smoking has even crossed my mind simply cos my throat's been in so much pain. And I'm a fairly heavy cig smoker and smoke weed virtually every day so for me this is kinda a big deal.
Been forcing myself to eat solid foods and drink plenty of fluids - even though it hurts like hell - since day one at my doc's recommendation and I think it has helped the healing process. Anyway, been looking to see what other people's experiences and recommendations regarding smoking have been, my doc told me to wait two weeks but obviously they're gonna eyre on the side of caution. Fair play to the guys who've been smoking since the day after the op and are still here to tell the tale, makes me abit more confident its not gonna do any serious damage!
Think I'm gonna leave it til tomorrow just cos then it'll be a week since the op so abit of a milestone. Will try check back in to let people know how it goes...
Haha, I hadn't thought about it like that before, I like your train of logic

I got my tonsils out 6 days ago, and I started smoking two days after. I started out slowly, taking a couple small drags off of a cigarette, and then I waited to see if anything happened. I also smoked weed out of a bubbler the same day, and just the same, I did it in moderation. Now I have been smoking two to three cigarettes a day, but still taking small puffs. I strongly advise if you do intend to smoke, to start off slowly with little drags/puffs, and gradually increase, because everybody's reactions will be different. Also, just a forewarning, it hurt like a b***h and still hurts a little each time.
im a daily smoker and i tried taking a little hit about 7 days after. i was fine until a couple of days later and then i started bleeding very badly. i had to go back into the hospital and get surgery again
I'm a 24 yr female and had my tonsils and adenoids out 8 days ago. The pain was fine for the first 2 days, I'm guessing b/c I was still under the pain meds from the hospital but once those started to wear off, I felt like death. I took the pain meds prescribed but it wasn't working out because I was unable to eat, which caused me to vomit all day b/c I was taking them on an empty stomach. The worst part about this is the disgusting taste lingering in your mouth. No matter how many times I rinsed out my mouth or brush my teeth (which believe me was ALL the time) I could not get rid of it. So if any one is wondering if thats normal, YESSSSS it is...I went to my doctor 5 days later to double check, b/c also there were white looking scabs on my throat which did not look sexy. LOL
I am also a frequent pot smoker and DID find that when I smoked which was 7 days after my surgery, that I was able to swallow and the pain was hardly present. I don't know if it's necessarily good for you, but it was for the pain. Once my high wore off, the pain was back.
:-| I would suggest that you do rinse your mouth out with mouth wash or brush your teeth to prevent any infections.

It sounds to me like you were pretty careful when you smoked up and you did actually give yourself a long time to heal before smoking. I think that would be the ideal situation, even if you were a smoker of cigarettes instead. I appreciate reading your experiences. Do you have any others to share?

Hey I'm eighteen, Had my tonsills out 8 days ago. I am glad to say that I quit doing any drugs about... mm six months ago. But let me tell you, I wish I hadn't from the day I had surgery until now. My pain has been un-barable to the point where I am crying and over-doing it with pain meds.
I do, however, smoke cigarettes and as bad as it sounds I have smoked since two days post-op (not counting surgery day). But, that wasn't nessicarily by choice- I couldn't get off the freakin couch I was in so much pain. Smoking hasn't seemed to cause anymore pain or make anything worse however with the meds I am on... after a smoke sometimes I would feel super naseous and go lay down with a wet wash cloth. Just be careful the amount you are smoking. Don't go smokeing a whole pack a day. Ten ciggarettes is the highest I would reccoment to smoke. I only smoke like 2 to five a day.

Im on the 5th day of my tonsillectomy the first day i smoked hella bud and it hurt just a little probably cause i smoked out of a can.
but on the 3-4 i smoked out of a pipe and it isnt as bad. it makes it feel better untill your high comes down than it just feels worse than before.
I would recommened smoking out of a bong/pipe/vap (no joints or cans) and when your burntout take your prescribed medication.
This method has made my tonsillectomy quick and easy (still painfull) but better than being sober lol

To the fellow pot-smokers out there, well done to anyone going to lengths including (but of course, not limited to): Ice on the tongue while hitting, short/long held hits, not hitting the bong directly, and especially those of you using vaporizers. I waited until my one-week milestone as well, and slowly started hitting a vapo-pipe. Felt great, didn't get too high... but hey, it's the nostalgia. And I drank water like a fish. Only one more week until I get to blaze up with ease!
As a prior smoker of cigarettes, trust me i feel your pain to those who have to quit while they heal, but please believe me when I say, that if you are hitting a cigarette, or letting any type of tobacco (smoke or saliva from dipping) touch any part of that healing throat. You my friend, are making a grave mistake. In some cases it may work out for the best, especially those cases advanced in their healing (the 11-16 day range), and to the people that successfully made it through recovery while smoking CIGARETTES (so we know I'm not talking about pot) congratulations! You successfully radiated the newest addition to your aging body. Nothing is to be left whole! But to anyone still within their first week? Imagine a sponge, newly formed, that has never soaked up any sort of liquid in its short sponge lifetime, and the first thing you decide to soak up with it... is tar? You are literally embedding the scarring and pollution inhaled during that drag on a cigarette, inside of your growing skin for the rest of your life. Something may come of it, something may not... that is up to chance, and how much effort is put into counter-acting your actions.
Believe me, I'm telling you to do what you have to do, just understand how TERRIBLE for your actually RE GROWING ORGAN in your throat that smoking a cigarette would be. And just consider that when deciding what is worth trying out. If you have it handled, by all means captain smoke one for me! But if you're willing to get the maximum healing, before you ruin the new throat with cigarettes anyways, just wait the 1.5 weeks!

i'm 16 and i got my tonsils and adnoids out about 5 days ago and i smoked a joint with my friends yesterday, got high, and it didn't bother my throat at all. idk if i'm willing to smoke more even though i want to really badly, i'm hoping my throat doesn't have any late bad reactions to me smoking but so far so good! unfortunately it still hurts HORRIBLY and i'm running outta the pain med they gave me :-(
I'm 32 and I tried 1 hit from a bong on day 8 and got some swelling the next day. My scabs were almost all gone by day 16 so on day 17 (yesterday)I tried it again but with an ice bong hoping it would be easier on the throat (took maybe 3-4 hits) but today I'm regretting it because I feel swollen and the swallowing pain is present again (it was pretty much gone since day 12). I feel really stupid for trying it again because I can really feel that it set my recovery back some. If you really want pot, bake it because the swelling is just not worth the buzz.
