in a nutshell, results are not totally conclusive, but there's some definite direction in the way of any smoking being detrimental to your recovery.
i ended up hemorrhaging twice in two days, 8 days after surgery, most likely from infected and improperly healed scabs. i'm now 12 days after the last surgery, and i will be waiting until mid-march or later to do any drinking or smoking since all the blood loss has caused me to have much much much lower energy and strength, not to mention that without my full blood-count i still can't stand up too fast without getting a pretty heavy head-rush. and i've lost 25 pounds so im sure drinking would hit me way too hard until i regain my normal weight.
anywho, read the article.

to the person above me ...did u have swelling after you smoked? and did it hurt or give u an infection...im hanging for a smoke but dont wanna get infected lol x
I'm on Post Op Day #6 from tonsilectomy and nasal surgery.
I became so nauseated today from antibiotics that I puked and decided to take a couple of hits from a water bong, in the hopes it'll help settle my stomach and help with getting my appetite back---I figured they give the stuff to cancer patients on chemo, right?
I think the worst thing that could happen would be getting dry socket, and I'm willing to roll the dice if it means feeling better...and I'm not gonna sit around and get really stoned or anything---so far all I've needed is one hit, and I'm feeling so much better!

Hi, I'm 17 and am getting my tonsils out tomorrow. I have been smoking cigarettes for 3+ years (yes i know that's bad for my age) and i go through a 30g pouch of tobacco in about 5-6 days. I haven't had a full cigarette today, in an attempt to try and harden the tissue in my throat in preparation for the surgery. I am really not looking forward to tomorrow and what follows, especially now after reading all of these horror stories; it has freaked me out a whole heap. Not being able to smoke is like hell to me, so I don't think I'm going to cope very well and am praying I won't haemorrhage. I'll post again here after my operation and share my stories.
Here's an article to read on smoking cigarettes. I would do that vapor thing if I smoked pot, but I don't. I wonder if I can vapor tobacco. Why not? How do you make a vapor bong? I'm going to buy rolling tobacco and vapor my tobacco.

I don't think there's any carcinogens in my cigarettes. I smoke natural Indian cigarettes. I have for a decade. I don't like chemicals in my tobacco. So, if there's not carcinogens is it less risky?
im getting mine out tomorrow... is it bad if i smoke tonight... i need to
I just hit it for the first time, it was on my 12th day not including surgery day. My preferred method are blunts. So I twisted a B very loosly rolled so as not to have to take a hard drag just to get the smoke out. I kept a glass of ice water next to me and took a drink of ice cold water before and after every hit. Of course being I hadn't smoked in almost two weeks I didn't smoke thw whole thing, just about 5 hits. It didn't hurt during or after. Make sure you take hits that you know you can handle that's not going to make you cough, I think that's the key. Hit it slow and soft. Don't go for the ultimate pull! Trust me after not smokin for almost two weeks a couple gentle pulls will do the trick! And most importantly after steadily drink water as to keep that cotton mouth at bay. Well that's been my experience, hope it helps and happy 420!
Oh yeah and don't use a method that's going to cause you to cough your brains out like a bong. I know you figure ice in the bong water would work nice and yes it will cool the smoke, but bongs are almost impossible to hit without coughing. And secondly bongs make you have to pull really hard and you don't want that either. You may as well be trying to suck a thick shake through a straw. Vapo would be ideal, but next to that a couple of one hitters of some quality green would do wonders!
I had a and Rhinoplasty and a Tonsillectomy last Tuesday 02/15/2011
I have been smoking joints and drinking tequila since I got home from the hospital - "no problems - healing nicely"
Doctors note said 24 hours ... I say go for it - rinse well afterward - have fun

Don't smoke weed till the sh*t's healed, not because the smoke will irritate, but the dry mouth will! The pasties will make any healing flesh dry up real bad and crack and be extremely painful, it may be possible to manage this with constant water consumption, but for goodness sake cook yer weed into some food and dont smoke it! at least then you won't get dry mouth and recovery complications
i got mine out yesterday and snuck in a few tokes last night and this morning. las tnight wasnt too bad just dont hoot too hard off the bong.
but this morning i took a nice puff by complete accident and i think i loosened a stich in the back and my uvula is soooo swollen, so im gunna wait a bit longer till i do it again ....

I got my tonsils out 4 days ago and I already went out to the bars, I smoked cIgarettes and drank, I feel completely the same.
sh*t i was smoking the day i had the surgery
I'm 18 years old and I'm on day 10 after getting my tonsils out. And I also like to smoke pot and I Was doing it everyday up until my surgery. I'm also still in a lot of pain when swallowing without my pain medication but I'm almost out of it. I think any one who ha had this done to aleast wait till day 10 to smoke anything and it also depends on how much pain you are in and how much you have healed. You don't want to hurt yourself anymore and anyone who has had this done knows just how painful the whole recovery is. I didn't eat for 5 days and lost 15 pounds and whenever I feel up for smoking I will. I need to get back my eating habits
