Hi,

I am 42 and just had my tonsils out 5 days ago.
2 hours after the op I was eating fish with leak sauce with mash potato.
The next morning I was eating toast with butter and a nice bowl of muesli. I have been informed that you should eat normally as this will encourage healing.
I am on pain killers and anti biotics, which work wonders. I am not in much pain, except late of an evening when I go to bed.

The only thing that worries me is that I have lost all sense of taste?
I have tried a nice hot chilli dish this evening, and it is the same taste as a normal chicken dish???

Did anyone else have the same, and do you get your taste back at some point.

I had my tonsills removed 3 weeks ago. Apparently they were a bit of a mess! (I'm 36 BTW) without labouring on all the pain, my question is, when will my stitches desolve? 3 weeks seems a long time to not have any signs of dissapearing? It driving me mad, they are really long and making me gag. Also my taste is altered. Everything tastes horrid. I have lost 8kg in 3 weeks, and I'm over it!! I would appriciate any feedback. :-(

The mornings were terrible until the pain medication kicked in but the third night i was in a lot of pain before sleeping and now day 4 is coming to an end and i am still in a lot of pain. I vomited this morning and i feel like i have so much gunge in the back of my throat and also have suchhh sore ears. Anyone have anything similar? Can anyone tell me when it will get easier to swallow?

I am 16 and i had my tonsils taken out 3 days ago due to Tonsillolith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonsillolith). The first 2 days were the worst days of my life, the pain and medicine that the doctor has given me makes me feel depressed and drunk. I have decided not to take the medicine anymore, it makes me constipated and feel like a drunk all day. I really hope it gets better soon.

As for the tonsillectomy itself, i too was very scared of the anesthetic (more than the pain). They inject it into you and initially nothing happens, but the next time you open your eyes the tonsillectomy will have finished. After waking up i went through a stage of memory loss, i was asking questions to a nurse and she says to me that i had already asked those questions 3 times already. My tonsillectomy lasted over 2 hours as i also had a nose cauterization. I stayed in hospital for another 8 hours until i could go home. Having a tonsillectomy is the worst thing iv'e ever had to go through, but hopefully i will get better soon. Tonsillolith is one hell of an ass. Having a tonsillectomy gets rid of Tonsillolith.

I had my tonsilectomy Thursday, July 1, 2010. Today is July 3rd and I am having a hard time swallowing. So far I have only been able to eat liquid-like foods. Apple sauce, apple juice, Soup-at-Hand, popsicles, and rainbow sherbet icecream have been in my diet. I try to drink water, even when I amnot thirsty. When I feel hungry, I would sip on a cup of my Soup-at-Hand, which is made by Campbell's. Today is day two and I am so ready for this pain to end. It doesn't hurt to the point were it puts me in tears. It just hurts. My cycle was supposed to start today and I only spotted. I can't wait until the two weeks of recovery are over. I had chronic cryptic tonsiltis. My tonsils were always inflamed and full of those little "booty balls," also known as tonsoliths. My breath was horrible. I hope that this surgery helps me by finally giving a chance at fresh breath.

Hi
I am a 34 year old male & I had my op 4 days ago, It was my first ever op so I was abit nervous but the anesthiatist was really good and I didn't feel the needle. When I came round after my op I was suprisingly in good spirits chatting with the nurse thinking to myself I felt well enough to go home. I was taken up to the ward, drifted in and out of sleep, had a sandwich and the next morning I had toast and musli. I was sent home mid morning but thats when the pain kicked in as my friend 'morphine' had left me. I was left with paracetimol, ibuprofen and codeine. I've been drinking plenty of cold warter and eaten as regular food as possible. During the day the pain seems fairly controllable but when evening and night time comes I'm not gonna lie to you the pain does get intense and includes ear, lower jaw teeth pain combined with the sore throat. The white scabs at the back of my throat is starting to dissapate but makes my breath smell. It will all be worth it in the end just wish my friend Mr Morphine was here with me o.O

I am a 26 year old mom and Just had my tonsils taken out last week. It wasnt so bad the first couple days but recently i have a intense burning on the left side of my throat by the back of my tongue. I was wondering if there are anyone else as an adult had any problems where the device they used to hold your mouth open making your tongue numb and to where you cant taste anything hardly. I cant taste any drinks or food most of the time and being in pain all the time. I had cuts on my tongue from where they had the device sitting to keep my mouth open. so now the cuts are healing but my tongue is still numb and its still hard for me to tell the taste and tempature of food and drinks. anyone else experience this?

I also am an adult and had my tonsils removed 3 weeks ago.  I cannot taste anything I'm eating or drinking. I did actually taste one extremely strong spice on a piece of chicken but that has been it.  I was never informed about this side effect after surgery.  I'm hoping that my sense of taste comes back.  The dry mouth at night is bothersome as well but hopefully in the end it's all good.

Hi,

I am 39 and got Tonsils removed 3 yrs back. But I regret having undergone the surgery as it has thrown my entire health out of gear. Within few months of the surgery, I had lost some weight, had lots of grey hair and also lost much hair.

Yes, as some of you have pointed out, I have also lost all kinds of taste; to be precise, my taste buds have died and don't get much apetite. Though I am able to eat/drink cold foods, I now get Sinusitis style problem and suffer from dizziness and blurred vision. Worst case, I started getting piles if I eac spicy food / take any medication. I am scared of taking any kind of medicine. Even a single dose of paracetamol causes stomach upset. I am now unable to bear hot & cold weather - there is a kind of burning sensation in my body. You no longer get throat infections and the related fever but you suffer from all other kinds of strange problems which cannot even be narrated. You cannot do much physical exercise as it might result in breathlessness/dizziness.

My physician says everything is fine and my blood tests also confirm the same. But only I know I have lost my good health forever.

My advice to all you guys and girls thinking about undergoing Tonsillectomy - DON'T go for it.  You will regret it for the rest of your life. These ENT "specialists" will always suggest for the surgery. Don't believe them.. Try to manage your throat problems with conventional medicines/antibiotics. Don't go for surgery unless there is some serious problem.

Always consult your general physician before taking the decision.

Best Wishes

Well wisher
