I am six weeks into my recovery. The pain in my knee was never difficult to deal with but the pain in my calf down to my toes has been extremely difficult to cope with. It seems I have nerve pain as the bottom of my foot and my toes are extremely sensitive and it feels like I am walking on cherry pits. I used ice, elevation, compression stockings all to no avail. Pumping my ankle does releive the pain while I am pumping my ankle but the relief does not last ten minutes. My PT thinks that perhaps the swelling is causing the nerve damage. She feels that perhaps the pain in my sole might be helped with acupuncture. The only help from the doctor is a prescription for blood thinners and come back next week. It is very depressing to receive no encouraging news.
I had a TKR of right knee on June 28, 2013. The surgery went very well and the pain was very well controlled. Even after leaving the hospital and going to therapy, I only needed to take 1 Lortab (10/3.5) every 4 hours for pain. My issue was I had an abundance of swelling which kept me from getting the extension I needed. Finally after 6 weeks, PT finally recommended that I see a Lymphedema specialist for therapy. After another 6 weeks of lymphedema therapy and regular therapy the swelling was gone but now the scar tissue had taken hold and I needed to have a manipulation done. The manipulation went well andfour weeks after that was done I had met the goal and was able to bend my knee at least 110 degrees. The only problem I started having was after the manipulation, the small numb spot that was to the right of the kneecap has now grown to the entire area to the right of the scar over to the side of my leg. It is also two inches below the bottom of the scar and about an inch above the top of the scar. The numb area has grown since the manipulation and each week I notice it creeps a little further. I had a check up with the orthopedic surgeon and he says it's not the knee. He thinks I have a pinched nerve in my back and wants me to have an MRI on my back. Has this happened to anyone else or is this possibly the reason for the numbness and pain that some others are experiencing?
Just had a knee replacement and my foot is numb, y'all are scaring me it won't go away
Almost 5 years since knee replacement, I still have numbness on the top of my foot with pain, I have been told by foot specialist not know how long of if feeling will return. A paper clip is painful if it hit my foot.
I had my knee replaced 1 1/2 yrs ago...I have tingling in calf & foot...I've been having acupunture & Chinese Cupping.to relieve some of the wears feelings.. (Tightness, numbness,tingling)..I'll let you know if it helps, too early to tell now..
My sister is 6 weeks post op TKR. She has been in pain since the surgery. She had the anesthesia that was a shot in the groin which I don't know if nerve damage. Morphine does not help the pain in the back of her leg and her foot. Her doctor says he does not know why. She has Kaiser. I so wish I can find some answers for her.
The acupunture & cupping did help my tingling , tightness prob.. I am also getting deep massages & stretches in my IT Band & the whole side of my leg & up into my back...that muscle goes all along the side...I am getting relief...which gives me hope ..I may be happy with my new knee someday..the one who gave the acupuncture said the tingling could be from the damaged nerves from the surgery are healing, which takes along time..
My TJKR was in 2011 and my experience is similar to the original post where almost "... immediately post surgery I had the numbness in two toes, the ball of the heel and in other areas on the foot. These places on the foot feel numb to the touch but are hyper sensitive to stand on and have sharp shooting pains unless I can control it by the pain meds." Along with this, I can not stand having my foot on bare floors if I am not wearing socks as the cold sensation drives me crazy. So far I have checked for peroneal nerve damage but the docter has mentioned that my EMG shows that symptoms and reduced knee jerk are from low back, which I feel is not correct as the timing of these syptoms started after the surgery. It is strange, that I have mentioned my foot numbness from the start, almost 1 week after surgery to every doctor that would listen but nothing... acupunture did not help. I have almost ran out of options and I am trying to stay away from pain killers as I like my liver... I guess i'll keep researching unless someone can point me into a right direction.
I am a nurse who takes care of TKR patients and I had a RTKR myself. What you are experiencing is from the nerves that were cut or manipulated during your surgery. Some surgeons are able to protect the nerves but sometimes they are inadvertently cut. Nerves are very delicate and even a little manipulation during surgery such as moving them aside in the surgical field can upset their delicate balance. Most patients do have some numbness and nerve pain after the TKR and for many it goes away. For others it is permanent. My ortho surgeon told me of this possibilty of permanent numbness in my leg prior to my surgery. And I do have permanent numbness along the outside of my leg from the knee down. To treat this, ask your ortho for Neurontin or gabapentin or Lyrica. Try one and if it does not work, try another one. You will find something that helps - I promise you.
It's called a nerve entrapment surgery,I had it done 1 year ago and it did no good because I develop scar tissue so quickly it just got trapped again.i had TKR 2 revisions 2 minipulations, before my entrapment.now still in pain and I see a pain specialist.
Has it gotten any better. I had knee replacement in 12/13. My foot is still numb, extremely sensitive and very good (almost feels hot). The bottom of my foot feels like it's a rubber sole. My toes feel like straw when I move them. It's been almost 1 1/2 years since surgery, I don't think it's going to get any better. I still haven't found any medication that seems to give me any relief.
I had knee replace in 12/13. My foot is still numb, tinkling and extremely cold. I know it's not going to get any better. neurologist says blood flow to my foot was cut off for too long. Have you had any luck with medication. Nothing seems to work for me. I'm in the process of finding an attorney. You only have 2 years to file. I hope your food got better
I had TKR in 12/13. My foot feels the same except it's extremely cold and the bottom of my foot feels like it's rubber. Have you gotten any better.
I had a tkr on 12/5/2013. Immediately after surgery, I felt that my foot and the back of my calf was numb & felt weird. It's now been a 1 1/2 years and the calf is almost back to normal. My foot however, feels like it has a 1/2" rubber sole, numb & tingling. It freezing 95% of the time to the point it feels like it's on fire, I have a hard time concentrating. Nothing has changed in the past 6 months and I think it's going to be like this for the rest of my life. There is no medication that I've tried that takes this feeling away. I've fallen twice in the last 6 months. I just turned 65. Debra
