Hello, I am 35 years old and have a son, 15 years of age. He is in puberty now, and has some medical problems. Every time he has to open wide his mouth when he is at the dentist, he is unable to close jaw for several minutes. It is more annoying than painful, and because of that, he spends hours at dentist. How can I help him?
He probably has some problems with jaw muscles, they spasm when the jaw is wide open. My son also had similar problems, doctors said that his jaw was too narrow, therefore muscle spasms each time he opened his mouth wide (while yawning and at the dentist). Like you said, it is not painful, but can be very annoying and discomfortable. He could use muscle relaxants, but I doubt that they will solve problem long term. You have to wait some time more, since human skeleton ends its growth at the age of 18. Then see if he still has problems with his jaw.
