Hi, I am a 51 year old single mother of two (24 and 22)with a full time and very demanding job and I also share caring for my elderly mother on two evenings per week. Over the past few years I have been diagnosed with both IBS and panic attacks. A course of the usual Omeprazole for the bloating/discomfort/over-production of stomach acid and watching what I eat keeps the IBS under control, but I know that it is a symptom of my lifestyle and a just-bearable level of stress, so I don't let it worry me.

The panic attacks are a different matter and, reading through the posts on here, I think that more than one of you may be suffering undiagnosed panics too. The symptoms I suffer are:

Repeated irrational thoughts about "what if..." : These can relate to anything from my health, and the possibility that I may be suffering from something incurable, to "what if I lose control of the car, or pass out while I'm driving..."

Palpitations
Nausea - on work days I cannot clean my teeth without gagging repeatedly
Numbness in my hands and feet
LIght headedness

The last two symptoms, which can be so severe that you think you're going to pass out, are caused by the 'fight or flight' response. With lower than normal levels of seratonin being secreted by the brain, your brain loses the ability to differentiate between real and imagined danger. Real danger in a well person would produce this response say if they were confronted by a charging bull. It is the 'fight or flight' response which is responsible for people jumping five bar gates in such situations; the rush of adrenaline giving them super strength momentarily, when they need it. In someone suffering from panic attacks, this response can be triggered by an imagined danger, totally inappropriately, and needs to be addressed. The reason it presents with the numbness etc is that, in the natural fight or flight response, blood is directed away from the extremities and sent to protect the vital organs, the lack of blood in the extremities causing tingling in the hands and feet. Understanding this was, for me, a first step towards beating it. It is a learned response and what can be learned, can be un-learned.

I haven't had the easiest life and believe myself to be quite a strong and practical person. I was offered anti-depressants and refused them. A series of coincidences led me to a 16 week course of group counselling with a wonderful guy who specialised in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I'm proud to say that I did so well on his course that he asked me to continue going and co-counsell the next group with him. Unfortunately, shortly after the next 16 week course started, the local authority decided that they would only allow people to offer counselling in the area if they had one particular qualification. No longer recognising his qualification, and with absolutely no credit being given to his undoubted success with us all, the Mid Essex PCT withdrew his licence and he had to stop. There is now, to the best of my knowledge, no NHS funded cognitive behavioural therapy for panic attacks being offered in the area at all.

Ok, that's the background.

I suffer a certain degree of light headedness on the same part of my journey to work every day, which i put down to a recent return to some my panic attacks after a prolonged period of serious bullying at work. This stopped, suddenly in about September of 09, so that pressure should be off. Bizarrely, it is not uncommon for panics to present themselves when the pressure is removed. Think of it that your life/stress level is like a bowl of water with a small gap at the top which allows for 'wobbles' now and then. If you drop a big rock, like a massively stressful experience into that bowl, the water will spill over the top (you panic). Sometimes, when the pressure is suddenly taken off you, it can have the same effect.

SInce the beginning of December '09 I have felt constantly nauseous, been afraid for my health/welfare (every member of my family who has died in the last 50 years has died from cancer of one form or another) and, having struggled with my weight for most of my life, have lost 12 lbs in 4 weeks...through Christmas!

There is a tendency with me to panic about the possibility of a full blown panic attack. My coping strategies include shouting at myself in the rear view mirror in the car saying "for God's sake shut up woman.... you'll be absolutely fine, you ARE absolutely fine", singing along with ANYTHING on the radio, deep slow breathing and, regardless of the weather, opening the car window wide. I also use mantras, because they sound so silly, thinking of them makes me laugh and I cant panic and laugh at the same time.

Today, I'm sitting up in bed, reading all your posts, and the contents of several websites dealing with a combination of 'unexplained nausea and weight loss' and have come to the conclusion that it's going to be hard, with my history, to get my Doctor to do more than the usual blood/urine/stool tests and, if he does, and they all come back negative like many of yours, where do I go from there?

It could be anything from an infection, a virus, hormones, the menopause, cancer of the ovaries (or just about every other vital organ you care to name) or it could be yet another symptom of the return of the panics. Maybe it's just another sign of the stress we all live under. Whatever it is, I want to know, because if I know then I can deal with it, fight it if necessary, and have a chance of beating it.

Stay positive all of you and if/when you find the magic solution that will heal us all, post it here in great big capital letters.

Peace x

I've had some similar symptoms since October...I hate going to school now because I know that when lunchtime comes and I have to eat, I'll be feeling sick and uncomfortable for the rest of the day. I get pressure in my stomach, nausea, headaches, sweats, dizziness...Part of those symptoms could be because I'm always so worried about it...I've gone to the doctor twice but they seem very casual about it...I feel like I'm going to faint when the symptoms start up. My stomach also makes weird noises when I'm feeling these symptoms...I hate it :-( I just wanna be comfortable and not afraid to eat anything but oat biscuits and apples.

Ive read all your responses. Ive had these same problems on and off for years. As a matter of fact, my family has a disposition to polyps, which are growths in the back of the nose that get infected and need to be removed but do not guarantee a permanent fix. You will always be susceptible to sinus problems that are due to your breathing environment, sensitivity and hereditary problems ...Thought I had my answer with that but there,s more. Basically, something in the air you are breathing is irritating you but you still cant walk around feeling dizzy and nauseous and expect to function at 100%. I went to the doctor who told me that the sinus cavity behind the nose is very deep and when infected, whether it is bacterial or fungal can cause sickness that can be fatal...dont get me wrong were not going to die from this but it is a serious problem. The antibiotics that you take for a regular sinus infection will not work and are not geared for this type of infection. The bottom line for me was to understand that I will have these problems on and off my whole life and dont feel well probably 3-4 months of the year each time it acts up but I have to try and prevent it by using humidifiers and air filters in my home and keep it very clean. I found an interesting article which I have pasted below

Fungal Sinus Infections

A variety of fungi that are normally found throughout the environment can be present in the nose and sinuses of most healthy people. In certain situations, however, fungi can cause significant nasal and sinus inflammation.

Fungus balls are overgrowths of fungi in otherwise healthy people. Symptoms include sinus pain, pressure, nasal congestion, drainage of fluids, and chronic infections. Surgery is needed to open the affected sinus and remove the fungal debris.

Allergic fungal sinusitis is a disorder in which fungi cause a reaction characterized by marked nasal congestion and the formation of nasal and sinus polyps. The polyps obstruct the nose and the openings to the sinuses and cause chronic inflammation. The polyps and inflammation often involve only one side of the nose. Surgery is typically required to open up the sinuses and to remove the fungal debris. Long-term treatment is also required with corticosteroids, antibiotics, and, sometimes, antifungal drugs applied directly to the area or taken by mouth. These drugs reduce the inflammation and eliminate the fungus. However, even after prolonged treatment, the disorder is very likely to recur.

Invasive fungal sinusitis is a very serious disorder that develops most often in people whose immune system is impaired by chemotherapy or by diseases such as poorly controlled diabetes, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, or AIDS. It may spread rapidly. Symptoms include pain, fever, and discharge of pus from the nose. The fungus may spread to the eye socket, causing a bulging of the affected eye (proptosis) and blindness. A doctor bases the diagnosis on the results of a biopsy (removal of a tissue sample for identification under a microscope). Treatment is with surgery and antifungal drugs given by vein. Doctors also must control the underlying disease and stimulate a weakened immune system because these infections can cause death.

Has anyone been checked for parasites? They're parasites that can get into your stomach and intestines that will bore through your stomach and intestines walls and lay their eggs. This will cause a lot of the problem that all of you are talking about here. Sushi is just one source where you can pick up these parasites.

Hi

First of all I also had the same symptoms, light diarrhea, dizziness, nausea, stomach cramps, hot stomach and what I experience is that together with all of those symptoms is extreme fast lost of energy. I would have a ton of energy and nothing is wrong, to having all those symptoms and having no energy(kinda feels like when you you exercised way beyond what you should have, with that same nausea) and all of that happens in less that 2minutes.

Now I first went to the state hospital(which in any case is useless) and literally after 2 hours if waiting they gave me a nausea pill with sugar and salt water, and asked me to wait for the doctor. I waited for a further 2 hours(feels like 2 days your feeling like that) and decided to rather go home and die than waiting for my death there.

The next morning I went to a private doctor and I told him that I have been examined on 2 previous occasions for having a problem with my appendix, but they(2 different doctors) both wanted to wait for it to give trouble again. He then looked and examined me, and said that he thinks its an intestinal infection. He said that it is caused by to much acid in the stomach, and said that I must stay away from acidic stuff like coke, bananas, apples(and some other fruits), alcohol, cigarettes and coffee. He prescribed me on 3 different medications. The first was for nausea/vomiting. The second was to lower the acidic levels in my stomach and the third was some kind of antibiotic, that clearly said to finish the routine.

I did it all almost to the book, except the coffee and coke part as it was all Icould consume without vomiting, and it all went away, until tonight(but a month later).

Would also like to know what it really is as the doctor did look unsure about it being an intestinal infection.

Hello,
I am only 13 years old, and i have been extreamly dizzy lately. I have been to my school nurse and she checked my blood pressure and said it was normal. I have also been feeling like i needed to throw-up.
Before i started feelin nausea I went to the doc tor and he said it probably had something to do with my inner ear or low iron. So, he gave me some medicine for it. It took away the dizziness, but just recenlt i have started getting nausieated.
Anyone have any idea what is going on?
Thanks,
Brittany

Hi,

I had similar symptoms during the summer - vertigo, nausea, lack of appetite, feeling weak. thank god they disappeared after a couple of weaks. however, it has always annoyed me as to what it could have been. I've been doing a little research since then and I think it could be labyrinthitis - an inner ear infection as all the symptoms fitted. maybe you guys should consider this as a possibility for your symptoms?

might not be very helpful (im not a doctor or anythin) but iv been experiencing the same symptoms the past couple days and ive been lookin into my diet. Found the cause of mine was caffiene overdose...caused my tiredness yet lack of sleep, nausea, headaches and hot/cold flushes. Drank more coffee than usual lately and been drinkin soda which had ceffiene in it. Could be something as simple as your diet so check whats changed in the last while since yous have been ill.

I have been having all these symptoms for over a month and my doctors gave me antibiotics and it worked for a bit then
stopped working. Nothing seems to be working, my friends think I am pregnant and that kinda scares me because I am only 17.
I don't know who to talk to or what this is. If anybody finds out please respond.
I am starting to get aggrevated and I can't concentrate on school and I am supposed to be gradding next year.
I have missed my period and everything is stressing me out. I just want to feel better.
Please let me know.

Hi everyone,

I'm 18 have had the same symptoms: severe neausea, headaches, dizziness, trouble eating, weight loss, grion ache and abdominal spasms and a heavyness in the lower back. Iv seen multiple doctors all confused, but one suggested IBS and after reading into this, this seems plausible- the only problem being there is no cure really, and untill i tackle my stress im not going to get any better- hope this as an option helps some people. Its the only thing that seems to match all these symptoms.

I have had these same medical problem for over five years.. my friend has also had them more than five years.. It was for the longest time, dizzyness/light headedness, hot and cold flashes, nausia, weird bowel habits, partial numbness/tingling in my fingers and feet. I have had everything checked for heart, lungs, ear nose throat, thyroid, had my gallbladder out, my blood was checked, Ive had numerous brain scans, MRIs, CT scans.. all the blood/urine testing.. EVERYTHING!!

Doctors now look at me like I AM A HYPOCHONDRIAC!! I used to freak out really bad because the onset of an attack was so sudden and so random.. they still are but I dont freak out anymore..

After a few years of those symptoms.. I have new ones.. light headache, yellow diarrhea/liquid, I have also had a TIA (mini stroke) which the Drs said was not a stroke because there were no causes for it.. but my entire left side went totally numb for hours.. I have residual effects from it in my left face.. also tightning in the chest, feeling like I cant get enough oxygen.. even though they have given me an inhaler..

I am 36 year old widowed mother of a 16 year old. And for that Im told I have severe depression, anxiety issues, panic disorder.. but the test have showed nothing except the ENG I had showed it was a neurological/central nervous system problem.. but no neurologist has yet to find anything wrong.

Im not crazy.. but I am tired of always feeling apprehensive about doing anything because I never know when this c**p is going to hit me.

Also.. I have noticed through out this blog.. everyones had the same answer.. everythings normal.. so what is going on? Obviously there is something because otherwise there wouldnt be so many of us with exactly the same thing.. and this is not the only place we are.. there are a LOT of us.
