I'm 15 (turning 16 soon) I get this feeling, exactly as you're describing it, 4 times a week or more.

It started when I was about 6 years old, and it usually happens when I'm somewhere with a lot of people, and everyone is talking, and it feels like everything is being fast forwarded.

I am 25 and had these feeling when I was about 8 - 11 and i keep having them sometimes but its really rare. I d say like once a year. Usually I drink sugared water immediately when it happens and it goes away. Since this has not really been studied yet i can't really agree with the AIWS theory. I beleive that if we had any preconditions as mentionned in the forum for aiws we would have much more symptoms keeping us to go about our every day lives because what is mentioned is pretty serious:
seizures, Classical migraine. Pain is not necessarily experienced.
Temporal Lobe Epilepsy
The Epstein-Barr virus, which can cause infectious mononucleosis, also known as 'glandular fever' or 'mono'.

At some point one of us would have been hospitalized....

It might be a alimentation problem, I am no doctor by no means, but this is not a placebo or subconscious result that i get when i drink water. and several previous writers in this forum suggested that it was hypoglycemy also. I beleived that at some point but did all my checkups and they were just fine. I tested for diabetese also . My brother has astma but i dont see the link to me....as some mentionned having astma. WE might just be deficient in some substance or vitamin. I really dont take enough supplement and my alimentation is lacking. Eating in the morning a complete meal is important. It helped me a lot. I do not play video games like those maniac today ( no offence). I play once in a blue moon. My doctor didnt seem to know what it was about. I was scared too and sometimes felt like I was going to lose control and start screaming at the bottom of my lungs. But I really think its the panic of feeling something beyond our physical control. Tell your son that its normal to feel the way he does. He just needs to know how to deal with it by drinking a cup of sugared water. Try that ....But really its just that it feels so strange thats what is scary. thats all not to worry.

Not to worry. MAybe you should try to give him a cup of water mixed with sugar when that happens. Its good to stop any sweet eating before bedtime but give it a try. I for some reason thought it was hypoglycemia also. If there could be a way to verify our sugar level when it happens it would be great. I did all my test at the doctors , diabetese, hypoglycemia , you name it. Im clear. The fear is normal as I as a child had fever for a different reason that day i vomitted , experienced that same really big/really thin and fast movement at this time for the first time. I had malaria that day....not to worry no malaria is only in really tropical countries. Anywayz I do beleive that it can cause a lil bt of delirium , coz i was scared and also feel like im gonna lose control by screaming like a mad girl. But as i said its just the real fast feeling that causes that and the impression of not being in control of your senses. It doesnt happen to me anymore, ( the deliruim) it was only as a child. Now i drink sugared water. I ask someone to do it for me and stay laying down in bed. hope this helps.

I have commented a few times on these posts after experiencing this since I was a little girl.. Something that I have noticed for myself, not so much anyone else is that they happen when I am alone, It is quiet in the house except for maybe running water (ie shower, doing dishes), maybe even vacuuming. I guess you would call it "White Noise". Ive looked up some articles on the effects of white noise to brain activity and here is the link.

They mention that noise is typically conceived of as being detrimental for cognitive performance.. and suggests that the hypodopaminergic brain need higher input noise to function to its full potential.

The thought that noise can effect our brain activity and release what we need to function says a lot since it seems mine happen so often with lack of noise, I truly believe this has a lot to do with this "experience" that we all share.

I have had the speed and sound aspect symptoms but some added ones as well. It started when I got sick at age 12 with swine flu then afterwards I would get these waking hallucinations of a woman standing behind a podium yelling at me and it was all very anxious loud and frightening 15 now and still get them once a month at least. Diabetes runs in my family so it could be blood sugar. Also schizophrenia is common in my blood line so these could all possibly some form of mental illness possibly related to waking seizures or epilepsy. Someone should definitely go to a doctor and sho them this site!

Hello! I was just wondering if you have ever found out a reason for this happening? This exact same thing is happening to me. It use to happen when I was a kid, and now in my 20's I'm experiencing it again. They feeling of your fingers feeling really small, everything is the same as your feeling! Bizarre!

Wow! I just had the feeling no more than ten minutes ago, and I decided to look into it. This is a strange sensation that we all deal with, huh? I was told it's because of low blood sugar, because if I eat right after, I feel relieved in a way.  I may be wrong because I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was a baby, but have had no seizures. Anyways, If someone knows anything about this andcan point me in the right direction, I would greatly apperciate it.

I am 61 years old and have had these episodes since I was a preteen, although they now have lessened to only a couple of times each year.  My daughter is 39 and also experiences these same symptoms.  They seem to occur when I'm alone and there is no external stimuli for my mind to focus on.  I've always felt that I possibly had ADD but it was not something that was ever pursued.  I've read that low levels of dopamine are associated with ADHD/ADD.  Since dopamine is the "feel good" chemical in your brain, there may be some type of mild depression causing these episodes to occur.  I've always had to have some kind of noise before I can shut my brain off to go to sleep.  I've slept with the TV on for many years.  The association of noise and function has been studied and people with low dopamine levels have improved cognitive performance when there are certain levels of noise.  A previous post stated that they were prescribed Topamax which caused an increase in these episodes.  Since Topamax decreases the release of dopamines, and if the person is "hypodopaminergic" (low levels of dopamine), this could indeed increase the episodes.  I'm not in the medical profession but in my case I believe that the possibility of ADD (which can indicate low dopamine levels), and the association of a hypodopaminergic state and no noise may be what has caused my episodes.  Perhaps this is something that the schools should take into account.  Some students may need the noise to be at peak performance, while others with higher levels of dopamine need silence.

My son is almost 12 years old and has just told me he has been getting these feelings for the past year or so. He said that he thought it was too hard to explain to me. He said it scares him and he's even told me not to talk so fast even when Im not. Should I get professional advice or ride it out

my little girl (age 10 ) has recently started having these episodes exactly as described here by everyone - it seems to be triggered by repetitive sounds like car indicators but today she had her 5th episode in the school dining hall at lunch time she says it was because it was so noisy - this one really freaked her out with it being at school but also because she couldn't get away from the noise and so it lasted alot longer then the previous.

I took her to the doctors for the second time - the first he just took her blood pressure and pulse and said it was strange but he wan't worried!! Today he has referred her to the paediatric docs at the hospital.

It started a few days after she fell and banged her head badly so I have linked that but the doctor says that is a red herring and he thinks it is more an anxiety thing than medical.  She is fine in herself and no other symptoms but this is freaking her out (and me!!).
