I have mild chest pain almost every night which lasts less than a couple of minutes. It's been happening for 4-6 weeks. I like to know the cause.

Hi,

I believe I had similar symptoms. I would wake up at about 2:00 in the morning every night with intense pain in my upper back, chest, rib cage, and abs. I found that taking Advil before bed helped with the pain and that would get me about 6 - 7 hours of sleep before the symptoms would come back and wake me up.

I found that the pain would go away once I started moving around the house or taking a hot shower. However, I could workout (like running), but it would end up making the pain worse when I would wake up the next day.

I am not a person who likes to rely on medication, so here is what I tried and figured out about my problem.

- I started forcing myself to sleep on my back. (I think this helped some, but this was not a game changer- everything would still hurt)
- I tried doing ab work. (thought process- pain subdues pain. This did not work)
- Taking Advil. (Yes this worked)
- Yoga/Stretching (This helped. I found child's pose, cat-cow pose, and cobra pose in that order helped. Child's pose was painful every time I did it. I started focusing on that pose with hip flexor stretches as hip flexors can be a reason that can be painful.)
- Foam roller (I would just foam roll the back. Keep you butt on the ground and bend your back over the foam roller with hands above your head. This was painful and still is.)
- Yoga Wheel 12 inches. (I bought this on whim. This was a game changer. I just do the camel pose over it but with my arms straight out in front of me. The huge back bend over the wheel really stretches and painfully messages the knots. Keep your knees on the floor when doing the bend)

conclusion: I personally found the yoga wheel and the foam roller together almost instantly fixed the problem. In fact, I slept on my stomach last night and had no issues. If I had to recommend a method, It would be yoga wheel camel pose everyday before bed and foam roll the back every other day after the yoga wheel, well at least that is what I did. Also, when you first get this problem keep taking Advil for the first couple of weeks, as you need sleep.

I am not a doctor, but I think the scar tissue has built up so much in my back that it is hitting the nerves that go around that body affecting everything else. Hope this helps and good luck!
