i have the same problem

no diabetes or any other blood related illness that i know of

but when i eat a significant amount of sugar it seems to increase the pressure behind my eyes. Painfully so

If i move my head fast it causes some blurring too.

i don't tend to eat sweets so it's not a constant problem but when i do it kind of scary.

the "faster" the sugar the more it hurts. Meaning if it's complex type sugars that break down slowly then it doesnt do much but if its chocolate candy bars that really breakdown fast and spike my blood sugar then it hurts quite a bit.

I bought pizza and some green drink from the gas station. i normally don't buy sugar water or drink pop. But I made the mistake of buying the "green drink"

Within minutes of having a couple glasses my heart started racing, my headstarted hurting and I lost most of my vision. A few minutes later I was barly even to stand up.

I was having trouble breathing and started to panic. I thought I was going to pass out and have to goto thehospital. I was scared.

I just want to say to anyone taht will listen, don't take too much sugar. It hurts.

I am having the exact same problem.
I have been having heart palpitations after eating for over a year now.
An EKG revealed nothing. Doctors just say I am "stressed"
but nothing has been done to help.
Recently I have been noticing extreme eye strain to the point where I can hardly keep my eyes open -- this is scary, especially when driving!!!

Has anyone found a way to aid this?

I don't eat a lot of sugar.
It is any time I eat a meal, even if it is a balanced one.

Hi experience that my eyes swell after I eat a high carbohydrate diet. My doctor has also looked at me like I am crazy. He said I have nothing.

Hi. I have a lot of these same symptoms and am experiencing the same frustrating results from doctors. I am a 27yo female and have always been active and healthy, but over the past few years have been developing pretty strange symptoms. I just recently was able to attribute most of it to food intake, especially carbohydrates and moreso refined carbohydrates. I am actually someone who has always loved sweets and breads, so it's pretty frustrating that they are having a negative affect on me. I was recently diagnosed with PCOS because I have been amenorrheic for about a year now. This is often accompanied with insulin deficiency so I thought that maybe that was an answer to all of this, but as the rest of you said as well, I've never had abnormal blood work and even had a glucose intolerance test that came back completely normal. I had to practically beg my doctor to run the tests in the first place because he told me I was a healthy weight and active and that I couldn't possibly be at risk for any of the conditions I was suspicious of. The symptoms I am having are dizziness, which can occur if I haven't eaten in a while or right after I eat, extreme lethargy right after eating anything high in refined carbs, little pin-prick size lights in my field of vision that are usually either white or blue in color. (It's kind of like when you stand up too fast and see stars except they aren't prompted by anything else happening.) I sometimes also feel fairly painful pressure behind my eyes, but haven't attributed that to any one specific thing as of yet. I also have swelling in my face and especially around my eyes if I eat carbohydrates. Sometimes my vision will go a little cloudy as well, but moreso in my left eye. I wear contacts so I always just thought that maybe I had a bad prescription, but I can clearly tie it to the food intake now. I have also had some "mental fog" and somewhat depressed feelings associated with this, too. I am noticing that the swelling also occurs if I drink a beer or alcoholic beverage as well, but not as much if it is wine.... which makes sense since these are all derived from grains as well. Just recently - literally just within the past few days - I've also been experiencing the changes in heart rhythm. It was my birthday weekend that just past, so I was eating more sweets than usual and at the end of each day, I felt like I had high amounts of energy concentrated specifically in the small of my back to the point where it made me feel like I needed to get up and work out, and I also felt my heart beating irregularly and it was fairly painful at times. I was afraid to go to sleep the first night it happened. Then when I went to work out yesterday I was abnormally fatigued early on in my regular workout and was seeing those little stars in my vision. I was afraid I might pass out!

I am a Registered Dietitian so it's not like I eat terribly and don't take care of myself. And it's pretty frustrating that I've never studied anything like this before other than symptoms of diabetes...but I don't have diabetes and have never had lab work that would show that I am at risk of developing it. It does help to know that others are having the same problems, but does anyone have any answers or leads yet? I keep looking to various carb-related allergies. Right now, I'm looking into a possible yeast intolerance, but it's never been an issue before so that will probably lead no where as well. Has anyone ever spoken to an endocrinologist about these symptoms? My doctor told me I should probably just avoid refined carbohydrates and that's all well and good, but I want to know WHY this is all of a sudden an issue. No one has any answers for me. It's very frustrating!

Pain in the eyes after eating sugar (any form) is a sign of developing glaucoma. The problem is not with the eyes but the amount of sugar that gets absorbed into your body. When sugar is consumed, part of it is consumed by bacteria forming the gut flora, the rest is absorbed into small intestines from where it enters blood. High amounts of sugar in the blood are dangerous for the body so body produces insulin which forces excess sugar in blood to enter cells including eyes. That is why, eyes (and even head/forehead) feels pain after sugar consumption.

Sugars can be readily absorbed into intestines without any pre-processing by bacteria/enzymes, unlike fats, proteins. Foods high in sugars tend to have a high glycemic index. And the problem is not with the consumption of sugar. If too much sugar is being absorbed, it is a sign of Leaky Gut Syndrome. It might due to food allergy, may be milk (which has substances that open the intestines for better absorption of nutrients - and that is why it is only good for calves and kids!), wheat... or candida/harmful bacteria overgrowth. Usually food allergy leads to a leaky gut and candida/bacteria take over later. If after restricting on foods containing sugar you become even more sensitive, it is sign of receding candida/bacteria. Now you need to remove allergic food. Plus use of antibiotics /NSAIDs also causes leaky gut besides food allergy.

Search: Glaucoma; Pre-Diabetic; Insulin; Glycemic Index; Leaky Gut Syndrome; Food Allergy; Candida on the web.
Feeling happy now? Not yet, the solution to this problem will require taking care of friendly bacteria and massive restrictions on diet. Good Luck!

I'm having the same problems too. Sore eyes 1-4hours after eating, face feels like it's swelling, unusual irritability, impared thinking, confusion, hard to focus my eyes, flickering lights are painful to look at (TV, monitors...).

Hypoglycemia maybe? Seems like it could fit.

Try cutting out wheat from your diet you will know quite soon if that is the problem. It's amazing the differnce it has made to my life, I was getting chest pains after eating it. It took me a long time to find out what was wrong with me, I started off with the feeling that my body was racing. I also had dry painfull eyes before I stopped eating gluten. Hope this helps someone. Sue

My left eye has a sharp pain in the center 1 hour after eating sugar. During a home glucose tolerance test using a blood glucose monitor from the store I checked my blood sugar every 15 min after eating 180 gm of glucose. The eye pain occurred after 65 min after eating the glucose and the blood sugar was 199 at that time. I charted the readings and they formed a curve that I showed my doctor. My doctor agreed was a pattern of reactive hypoglycemia. I forgot to ask her what the eye pain after eating sugar could be caused by. I wonder if it's doing some damage? It feels like it's splitting when it's happening.

My opthomologist said he'd never heard of an eye hurting after eating sugar. He said mine both look healthy.

My eye pain is always in the left eye and occurs after eating small amounts of sugar at other times, not just during the test I notice it more when I've eaten only something sweet by itself. Also I get a sticky mucous with slight blood in the nose after eating something sweet or high carb. It's accompanied by a pressure between the eyes, and sometimes I get an icky feeling like a sick hot flash beginning between the eyes. Then I break out in a sweat momentarily, and then feel much better right afterward. Anyone help with explaining these strange occurrences? Looking at lights or the sky also seems to help my hypoglycemic feelings. And maybe antihistamines. I took a Claritin once and it seemed like the hypoglycemia went away all day except for the sinus discharge.

I have insomnia that is accompanied by the sticky mucus with slight bloody nose at 3am nightly, too. Seems to be related to the hypoglycemia because I feel hungry and cold. Then, when the sun rises I suddenly become sleepy and my nose clears up. I can feel the sinuses clearing up and crackling, and can fall asleep again.

I did have rosacea 20 years ago. No more because I took Accutane at the time and it hasn't returned. I mention this only because a previous message mentioned rosacea.

I don't eat wheat as of 2 years ago, and stopped eating casein a year ago. Enterolab test result showed I shouldn't eat them.

My kinesiologist says I have maltose intolerance. But there is no maltose in dextrose so this shouldn't be the cause of the eye problem.

I am a 31 year old male and have recently noticed an increase in Heart palpitations shortly after eating meals. I dismissed these symptoms but they have become more and more frequent especially after eating meals high in sweets. Sometime the palpitations occur almost immediately after swallowing foods, especially those high in sugar. I have now experienced vision problems after eating to go along with the palpitations. Are these symptoms of a digestive problem, high or low sugar levels or worse yet a pre cursor to Diabetes?

I am 27 years old I have been having heart palpitations for the last two years after i eat. I have been to 2 cardiologist who said everything was normal. but finially put me on antenolol to help with them. Atenolol does help but not always. It does not seem to be any specific food but anything heavy for sure. it makes me not want to eat and i am afraid if i gets any worse i will have an eating disorder or something b/c the palps make me anxious and worried everytime i have them b/c the often last for an hour or two but my heartrate is usually only like high 90's. Does anyone have this problem or know anything that helps?

I have problems with my eyes hurting after I eat salt. Does anyone else have this issue? Does anyone know why it happens? It does subside some after drinking large amounts of water afterwards.

I have eye pain after eating (feels like at the back and I also seem to have more floaters than I remember), definately seemed related to carbs. I also get numbness in my hands, sometimes feet when waking up.

I've been cutting down on sugar for a while and when this happenedI stopped sugar as much as I could which worked out as 95% complete since it's very hard to avoid.

This sounded to me a lot like diabetes or prediabetes so I got a machine and started taking reading but so far it's all been within normal range (4-7)

The eye pain I originally thought was due to higher blood pressure after eating and glucose but I guess it's not that. The next test will be blood pressure tests.

Improving circulation has been possible with some extreme temperature variation but the most effective was Nitrogen Oxide supp. Oranges or vit-c & L-Arginine was less effective but works too.

Numbness hasn't improved after curtailing sugar.

I've just had the eye pain after eating a concoction of stuff including some flavoured protein powder. I think it could be the protein powder, will investigate.

Have you been tested for hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia?
