My hope is simply to speak with a normal voice. I were hoping to return to my church choir but I gave it up for my voice is not up to any singing at all now. My TT was morethan 3 months ago and my ENT told me then that it might take 3 months for my voice to return. But my voice has any imporvement.  I wonder if my voice will ever get back to normal.

Anyone out there who has been like me, more than 3 months after TT and still very hoarse ? Any hope do I have ? What can I do ?

To those who have gone with the surgery, I am a student nurse, and I have a patient who had undergone thyroidectomy, and the doctor says that the hoarseness of the voice of my patient will become permanent like the medication  given by the physician the Calcium carbonate. Hoarseness & sore throat may occur secondary to tissue edema or surgical damage the recurrent laryngeal nerve.
But, just try to search from the book and surf the net regarding to this illness..and for the better, try to consult or ask a Physician before trying anything in your own because it might result to any further complications. Thank you.

I had a total thyroidectomy with level 6 lymph node removal in June 2011. I lost one parathyroid also in the surgery. They had concluded I had cancer but am blessed that it was a false positive test. I do not have the ability to yell, which really is not bad but if I had to yell for help, I would be in trouble. Also I run out of breath really easy when talking. I cannot sing Karaoke with my family anymore, which is really sad for me because we used to have parties all the time. I am hoarse all the time. My dr also thought at first that I had reflux but that was not the case. Then he determined maybe I had drainage and tried meds for that, still no help. My friends and a couple of other drs suggested I get a second opinion.

i totally understand this. I use to love singing Sandi Patti songs(soprano christian music). I had thyroidectomy in 2006 and im just starting to get some of my singng voice back. I cant yell out my kids names anymore during a sporting event. The hardest was, thinking soprano but only alto coming out of my mouth. It also so hard to harmonize because ur voice wont do what your brain is telling u to do.

10 weeks after total thyroidectomy - voice gradually improving, singing range increased from 2-1/2 notes to an octave, but it's an octave lower than normal. Change now about a 5.

I posted about two months ago of my voice problem after thyroidectomy. I was pretty husky most of time if not hearable. But after six months, my voice somehow has returned, though not 100%, at least 85%. I can talk now. University starts and I resume my teaching. Stutends say I sound o.k..

My ENT said that my vocal cord was 80% strained by the surgeon from his experience. He was afraid that my voice would never return. Thank God the nerve grows back slowly at least i can talk now. Just post this to whoever experience the same problem. Voice will return, some takes longer than othera, like mine, six months. Marcel.

I am worried about the same thing actually,, I had surgery on september 12th and I cannot extend my voice either I am stuck in mono tone and worried it will not come back, it is extremly fusterating to me so I continue to do voice exercises to see if I can get it any higher but it isn't working so well, Its like everytime I attempt to raise my voice something gets in the way, it is not a very easy thing to discribe to someone else it is just weird. I hope and pray for you and I both it will come back soo... Just do what I do when people sing they do the scale with there voices and maybe it will work after a while.....

This was so encouraging for me! I had my partial surgery in September 2012 and I am a singer as well. My range no where near what it was and I am depressed about it. Maybe I just need to give it more time and wait on God. He never fails...but my flesh is weak...I miss singing so much and I feel like I wanna cry right now.. In time I guess...

I loved your story and the how God "Restored" your voice. I along, with everyone else had Thytoid surgery about 3 years ago and my voice is not at full capacity, but I am believing God for my Healing and believe with the right doctors and practice, He is going to also "Restore" my voice because I love and miss singing....With God All Things are "POSSIBLE"!

Hi, after 4 weeks since my total thyroidectomy to deal with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, a multi-nodular goitre (small) and Hurthle cells, the result is clear of cancer and with assurance of no damage to the vocal chords. My speaking voice is improving a little more each day but my once pleasant second soprano singing voice can only manage a Lee Marvin rendition of 'I Was Born Under a Wandrin' Star'! I have gone from a very low F up to a very low A in over a week, so I am hopeful of an eventual recovery to a higher range. I have heard it can take some months. All the best, Scottie

I teach fitness classes and am going to have to make the decision soon, remove throid or keep it. In my classes I have to project instuructions to my students. I am very concerned about my voice after surgery. My classes brak between semesters. I have about three weeks down time to have surgery. I was wondering if you knew how long it would be until I could return to teaching.

I have had total thyroidectomy and I can speak. I do get breathless speaking and feel better leaning my head forward down to swallow. there is hope that our situations will improve. I wish us all well and advise that we keep on being positive and keep reading and learning more about this ailment.

I had my surgery in 2009 and my voice has not fully returned. I was an alto and am now singing 2nd tenor and could probably sing 1st bass. The range is not there and I have also noticed that sometime I sound slightly off-key. I too can no longer yell. It is difficult to be a choir director who has to sing everything in the lower register and sometimes that's to high. It is also embarrassing for people on the telephone to address me as "yes sir." I continue doing the bust that I can.
