I had RD surgery on 12/7/14. Ever since, have had the same waviness, blurriness you describe. In order to have any clarity, I wear an eye patch, 24/7. This condition is no better now than a week after surgery. I've just come to the realization that it's not going to ever change, so my focus is on getting on with my life as a one-eyed man. It could always be worse though, so adjust to it the best you can. Also, I've never read, or heard from anyone, whose RD surgery resulted in these wavy lines, distortion, and blurriness go away.....hang in there!

I had RD surgery and a scleral buckle put in 2 1/2 weeks ago. My vision in my left eye has been improving very slowly over the days and currently I'm experiencing some degree of waviness in this Eye. I can read at a very close distance , However I still have to interpret the letters at the very center of the eye because they are smooshed together. I will continue to update if things improve. So far I still have not read any post from anyone stating that the waviness goes away completely. I will say that is somewhat discouraging, and so all of us should think positively and optimistically as I'm sure people that actually heal over time probably do not come back to post about the healing so we only see those that are still dealing with the issue posting here. On a positive note, even though I have waviness and things are about 40% smaller, I am still able to read through this Eye.

I totally understand what you guys are going through. I'm 22 and I had a detachment in my left eye due to vitreous traction in March 2015. I had laser and vitrectomy with silicone oil for 7 months, and I then developed cataract from the oil. Finally the oil and cataract were both removed along with more lasering on 29/10/15. So far vision is very poor I can't read even with reading glasses but I know it's very early stages only being 3 weeks. Definitely not able too drive. I also have no vision at all in my other eye since birth which makes the long recovery process much more difficult. Hope vision will improve enough to work and drive. Still better than being totally blind!

Hi Dan, It's now some time since you had your op. Can you let me know if you are still having the wavy lines? I went to Sheffield Eye Hospital with what turned out to be a tear, but they couldn't tell exactly where it was. Two weeks later, after returning home to Scotland, the retina detached and I had it reattached in Edinburgh and needed the cataract done within a couple of weeks. Two days later I developed wavy lines. That was four weeks ago and they have not improved. I have to close the affected eye to use the computer and yesterday had to do that to drive, in spite of having driven ok two or three times in the past couple of weeks in daylight. Hubby wants me to get a second opinion by going to Sheffield again, but I am not sure they will be able to help after your comments, which is whyI would like to know how you are now. Thanks

I had my surgery on Oct 7, 1915 and I have the same symptoms as you do and have come to the same conclusion..I also wear an eye patch but I don't wear it 24/7....I have to use it when driving, reading, using computer or walking stairs or doing any other task that requires clear vision or depth perception. I compare looking through that eye as looking into a fun house mirror...I can read the second line of an eye chart with the bad eye....luckily my good eye is 20/20. I am beginning to think it might have been easier to just stay blind in that eye since it seems to be more of a problem now since I literally have to not use it in order to function properly....Good luck to you.

I had DR surgery with bucke and gas bubble 4 weeks ago. I was cleared to return to work 2 weeks post surgery even with the bubble not completely gone. Now 2 weeks later the bubble is completely gone but poor nearsighted and wavy vision is the issue. Each day it seems to get better but the doctor won't do anything about glasses or anything to correct my vision until things stabilize (makes sense) which makes working at a job that involves computer screens very tiresome. I typically patch or cover the eye and use the left (good) eye way too much. I have always been extremely nearsighted but can read up close without my glasses. Today I could read my iPhone that way for the first time but everything is wavy like roller coaster. Things in the distance are still just blurred (like I don't have glasses on) but with my corrective lenses. Based on all of the posts here and elsewhere, it looks like even if I get to the point of having corrective lenses that help me see things in the distance more clearly, the wavy images may never go away. As long as I can somehow use my eyes together, I can live with that. It is just so tiresome and stressful to only use one eye at a time. I just haven't read anything that makes me hopeful regarding the wavy vision. I wa told that I would likely need cataract surgery down the road and even that doesn't seem to be likely cure. Just hoping to use both eyes at the same time soon. Baby steps I guess.

Hi,

First, I'm glad there are others who may be as frustrated as I am. I had cataract surgery in early 2016 on both eyes and shortly after, had a detached retina in my left eye. did all the right things after surgery, sitting upright for three weeks, even sleeping upright. after gas bubble shrank, my left eye was really good. but then, the vision has progressively gotten less and less clear and now vertical wavy lines are appearing. lots and lots of glare that prevent me from driving at night anymore. this will impact my evening commute when the daylight shortens this coming winter. not very pleased with the results. All I know is my Dr. keeps telling me everything is healing just fine....well, it's not really just as fine as my Dr. seems to think. I sometimes think this is become such an assembly line surgery that they just don't take time to listen to their patients when they tell them...'hey, it's not healing well and the visions is getting worse...' no one seems to listen or care and not sure what to do about it. I feel a victim of a medical process that's grown impersonal because it's all about the cattle call, assembly line insurance profits......but it's my eyes....they don't care.....they got their insurance money....I lost my vision....

My Doctor never explained to me these possible, permanent 'side effects' from the surgery. I wish he had. A little open, honest conversation would have been nice....Instead.....'Mike, everything looks good and is healing nicely' I wish my doctor could spend a day seeing through my eyes to understand what's really happening. I don't think they care these days.

You situation is very similar to mine. I am eight weeks out from retina detachment surgery and seeing wavy lines (metamorphopsia) as well as things being a smaller size in my operated on eye (aniseikonia). Fortunately, I have a very caring surgeon who did the re-attachment who is not the original cataract surgeon. On my last visit, he did a retinal scan (I forget the technical term) and found a great deal of swelling which he said could account for some of the distortion. He put me on prednisone for swelling and another drop for inflamation and wants to see me in four weeks. I would advise a second opinion in your case. Maybe get the swelling checked out. I don't have any pain. Good luck.

I had RD surgery five yeas ago in left eye. For the most part, vision is really good, really sharp, and I just got new glasses, too, which help. BUT, some days, I do have the wavy distortion, and a floater or two. It just happens. It's part of surgery's after effects, I'm told. It usually goes away same day, or a day later. I am very light-sensitive, so I take care to use dark glasses and hats. It does not help that my right eye detached three times in one month and now I have an oil bubble in there for a few more months. Very frustrating! Hopefully when my doc takes the oil out, my left eye will calm down a bit!

I also had a vitrectomy done in my right eye about a coiple of weeks back. Hopefully things will be allright for you. Sometimes you just have to leave it to fate and be positive.

I have the same feeling about my doctor. I had my surgery 10 days ago and yesterday he said I had developed a hole in my macula. And he said there was nothing he could do about it. My central vision will be blurred anyway. He has tons of patents and he saw me for only 5 minutes. He never explained anything unless I asked him. No precasutions, no recommendations, no prognoses, nothing, He even asked me the date of the surgery he did and asked when my detachment occurred. He should have asked the latter when he saw me the first time. These doctors are heartless.

I also had a ( 2012 ) difficult surgery, buckle and all. The distortion you see is likely a bump on the retina they refer to as a Macular Pucker. In my case, the cause may have been the pulling action of the Vitreous as it shrank. I just had the cataract surgery a month ago, and I see the distortion in the center of my field of view. Like you said, I'm thankful for what I can see given the severity of the original event.
