This has to be the worst thing to happen to me. I had cataracts surgery on both eyes, with no problem. Then came the Retinal Detachment Surgery on my left eye, and it has been a nightmare. I had the surgery 10 months ago, and my eyesight is worse than ever before. My sight from my left is distorted, sometimes blurry. One eye doctor explained to me that the repaired retina is NOT placed like a flat blanket at the back of my eye, rather it may have wrinkles and an unevenness to it. The doctor says my left eye will never again be what it used to be. He says over time my brain will learn to use my right eye predominately, and my left eye will just limp along for the ride. Sometimes I think I am better off being a pirate, and simply wearing an eye patch all day!
I was told I needed vitrectomy before catarat removal surgery During the vitrectomy on my left eye however my retina detached because the doctor said I moved I wore gas bubble for 9 weeks Now 2 years after vitrectomy and catarat surgery a year after that, my vision is so wavy and it seems to get worse My right eye also became so I could hardly see anything out of it For right eye he injected steroid into my eye and it seems to have helped a little bit but now I noticed it also is wavy! I am so concerned, should I get a second opinion? please help!
I had RD surgery about a year ago from a surgeon who just joined my ophthalmologist's group. The surgery was scheduled so quickly I didn't have any time to check her credentials. I now find online she has mostly done LASIK surgery in the past. I cannot find any references or reviews of her looking at five cities and three states across the country. After the surgery, pictures of my macula show it is flat. Objects are smaller and quite distorted. I cannot read or write without closing one eye. I recently went to a top retina surgeon and was told I have a stretched retina, which is pulling on my macula. I doubt there is anything that can be done to correct my vision.
June 1, 2021: I had RD surgery in my left eye May 11, 2021. The bubble is almost gone. The wavy lines are pretty intense. It's like looking into a fun house mirror. I'm following this thread with interest. Thanks everyone for posting about your experiences. The surgeon gives no reassurance in this area. This thread has been helpful.
I teach visual communications and web design. This should be interesting.

Wearing an eye patch helps me too.
I lost over 50% of my vision in my LEFT eye and had my first RD surgery 2 days later on March 21, 2021.
Fortunately, my RIGHT eye is my dominant eye.
I got my vision back for a week before the second detachment.
3rd surgery for scleral buckle. 4th surgery to take out opacified capsule.
5th surgery to replace lens on Jan. 20, 2022.
BLEED in eye so completely blind for over two months until a week ago - about April 1, 2022.
Blood has nearly cleared out FINALLY ... but vision is quite blurred and lots of wavy lines!!
WHY is there no instruction from the doctors about what recovery is like??
I wear a patch on my glasses to keep me from going insane.
I will be seeing my opthamologist in two days .... may get new glasses.
BUT, I can image how the waviness can be addressed.
Has ANYONE had significant waviness and had it go away or get significantly better???
I wish doctors would provide:
1. What the final condition might be like?
2. How to deal with the psychological effects of this type of confused vision? This has been psychologically and physically VERY stressful and exhausting!!
3. Suggestions on how to deal with two-types of vision. No one suggested an eye patch but I had to figure it out on my own.
Finally, Covid quarantining was nothing compared to this isolation. I haven't driven for over a year and have to get my wife to drive me if I need to go anywhere. I am going NUTS!!

Hello, You said that " I have been very pleased, even astounded, by the improvement after Lens Replacement surgery." I wonder if the distortion and scaling ( I have my objects minimized mostly horizontally, I'd say they look squashed) were fixed after the Lens Replacement surgery? Anything you can share or any advice would be highly appreciated! I've been 2 months post RD (macula off with 2 large tears stitched in the central part of vision). My doctor is very defensive about my complaints in regard to my expectations. I have awful headaches, head pressure, dizziness, totally out of balance, my right eye was -9 diopters with astigmatism before RD and it was my "better eye", so I also feel very handicapped lately.
