My daughter is 6 years old, almost 7 and had her tonsils out at the end of July. She constantly tells me she is hungry. I feel like I'm being mean but I have read numerous articles about weight gain after tonsillectomy so I tell her she cant be hungry and only allow a few snacks a day plus her 3 meals daily. She has already gained 2 lbs since her surgery. I hope she doenst continue to gain weight. My husband and I were slim during our childhood and continue to be at a healthy weight. She has always been of normal size and I would hate for her to become overweight because we had her tonsils and adenoids taken out because of strep and snoring. Does anyone had the answer as to what to do to prevent her from gaining anymore weight?
Same boat as everyone else here! My son had his tonsils removed and his 5th set of tubes put in 2 years ago (age 8). He was always a husky boy but not with a huge belly. Within 4 months, he packed on 20 lbs! I took him to the doctor and she just recommended a dietician. I continued to monitor what he ate (always sack lunches with healthy foods). His eating habits really did not change.....no junk food kept in the house, normal portion sizes, etc. His is now about 35 lbs heavier than he was pre-tonsilectomy.
I have an appt set up to get orders for blood work. I want to have his thyroid checked out and also to check if he is pre-diabetic!
I am glad I found this site and I wasn't the only one frustrated with this. It is hard to hear him tell me about what the other kids say to him ("Your fat", "Hey fatso", etc.). Rips my heart apart.

sorry folks. even if there were a direct effect between tonsillectomy and weight gain, the weight does not come from thin air. Calories in vs calories out remains the bottom line. Did you read how many calories are in goldfish and pretzels? Cut out the manufactured/processed foods. No starchy/sugary snacks or drinks. The weight gain is truly hand-to-mouth disease.
My story is the same, My son had his tonsils out at age 7 and immediately began gaining weight. He is now 10 and weighs 115 lbs. I regulate his diet strictly and he is very active... He was underweight before the procedure.
When I found this discussion I felt I had to contribute. I was a normal weight child. Had my tonsils out at age 3 (1951). I immediately began to put on weight. Though I did not get obese, I was always overweight and on diets from age 9. The frustrating thing was I could be absolutely perfect at diet and exercise - and still not lose a pound. Most of my adult life I have been 20-30 pounds overweight despite all efforts at diet and exercise. Around age 50 I was diagnosed with low thyroid - a major symptom of which is weight gain. I believe it started at age 3. Parents: get your children's thyroid checked. However, this is not as simple as it sounds. You can have normal thyroid test results but still be low thyroid - that is the fault of the tests. And most of the time you will get the wrong medication. It is heartbreaking.

I am now 62 and finally getting my thyroid adequate treatment and beginning to lose those last 20 pounds that would never budge. I wish for you and your children that you not have to struggle with this like I did. Get the thyroid checked, and if your children have symptoms of low thyroid, don't stop till you find a doctor who will give you the right treatment. Good luck.
My daughter was tiny until she had her tonsils removed at the age of 3. No she has a tummy and says she is "hungry" all of the time. She is not a bad eater but enjoys eating now whereas before she didn't eat as much. I think this is where the "weight" issues come into play. Her peditritian is not worred about her weight but we still keep her active and eating good/healthy foods most of the time. We have cut out drinks with sugar except one Sprite on the weekends and the rest is water. I do think it has alot to do with the fact it was hard to eat before and how that they are no longer there they tend to eat more frenquently.
I just got my tonsils out 3 days ago and have already gained 8lbs! I was a skinny 110lbs and very happy at that weight....3 days later i weigh 118 despite only having liquids and water ice. I use to eat a ton and not gain a single pound, now im eating nothing and gained 8lbs!
My son had the same surgery as you daugher, tubes, tonsils,and adeniods as well. In the past year he has gained over 20 pounds. Doctors are telling me also that this is not the cause even though I know it is. I have 5 children in total and none have ever been overweight. My son was not either until after the surgery. They even checked his thyroid and it was normal so they suggest a diet for him. I am positive thats not the answer to the problem. He eats a heathly diet and is very active but the weight is not coming off. I want you to know that I completely believe everything you are saying and hope that more research goes into this issue soon for I worry about the health issues that could effect our children later in life due to the weight
This is going to sound so repetative but my son had his tonsils out when he was 3. He was thin before the surgery. Within months the weight came on. I thought it was stress due to my mom passing away and a divorce with my husband. He is now 6 and is 100lbs! He is very active. He loves to play basketball and run around. Although he's out of breath easily because of the weight. It tears my heart to see him suffer. Kids at school call him fat and all kinds of mean names. Adults make comments to me about how "big" he's gotten. I'm starting to think the weight gain isn't becasue of stress but becasue of the surgery. And sadly, I caught this page too late. My 9 year old just had his tonsils out 2 weeks ago. I'm so scared for him! Has anyone found any answers or at least a dr that'll admit the two have to be linked?? I'm scheduling an appointment tomorrow to get his thyroid checked out. Good luck to everyone!!
OK, so I went to the dr's today. She didn't throw the idea out the door that the two might be related which was a relief. She said his tonsils were probably too big to consume alot of food. Once they were out it was hard for him to control how much he ate. I did take him in last year because he was always having stomach aches and then he would be running to the bathroom and be on the toilet for awhile. At first we thought lactose problems but then we decided he was eating too much too fast. We cut his portions back and slowed him down. Problem solved. But he was still gaining the weight. Today he weighed 101lbs. He's only 6 years old! :( She think his metabolism is low so she wants me to try him on a low/no carb diet for 90 days. She is also ordering tests on his thyroid, choloesterol, and some other blood work just to make sure the damage isn't already happening. I so love my kids doctor!! She didn't make me feel crazy. And she wants the best for him. Hope this helps anyone out there. I'll check back in periodicaly to update my sons status. Fingers crossed!.........

Hi everyone! I wanted to give an update on my son. When I took him to the doctor a little over a month ago he was weighing 101lbs. She put him on a low-carb diet. He's lost 10lbs already!! We've been keeping an eye on his portions. That one is huge. Having his tonsils out made it difficult for him to control his portions the dr thinks. So far so good. Plus, i'm trying my hardest to keep carbs on a minimum. That is soooo hard but we're hanging in there. Poor little guy wants pasta so bad! His tests came back good except his glucose. they wanted 99 or lower and he was 101. Not too much higher but they want me to continue with his new eating habits or else it could be a problem. hi my names lynn, new to this site, which has made my day, for 6 years i have fought with doctors, after my sons tonsils adanoids were removed, he was only 4 years old weight 2 half stone, or 34 pounds, he was hypoactive as well. 5 months after op, doubled his weight, 5 stone,
now age 10 weight 12 stone, my heart is breaking, as he hates himself,still hypoactive up till 6 months ago, think the weight, is slowing him down, had blood tests for thyroid, still nothing, now waiting on results for, prader willi syndrome, which is rubish, as he is strong as an ox, so just wondering, have you got any answers, since last year lynn

help anyone had results, after child has tonsils removed, my son was 4 years old weght 2.5 stone within 5 months weight 5 stone, still hypoactive, evan more after op, still weight has increaced over the years, he is 10 now, weight 12 stone, have had a mmr on the brain, nothing blood tests on thyroid nothing, dibetes, nothing, only been trying for 6 years, told doctors from the beginning, it was through tonsil op, but they disagreed, infact i think there sick of me, waiting on results for prader willi syndrom, but my son was a strong baby, has normal mustle funtion,and does not crave food like the children who have the condition, i know something went wrong in that theatre,but need help pin pointing it,
