I traded my minivan in for a sports car back in 1998. No biggie, the surgery. Day surgery, takes about 15 mins, they don't put you under but they give you some wonderful to to relax you.
My advice? Schedule it on a Friday so you have two days you can stay in bed and be waited on hand and foot as you "recover." Actually, I never felt any real pain, a little discomfort but everyone assumed I was suffering in silence--and who was I to correct them
But do be sure to keep ice on the affected area and take some type of anti-inflamatory to keep the swelling down even if you feel ok. A friend of mine bleed and, well, swole up the size of an orange 8O and I am not kidding. He was in some serious pain, had to be hospitalized until the swelling went down. Infection is a very ,very small risk--real risk is overdoing it and bleending, thus swelling.
By monday, I was ok to resume my normal life. Now, taking the specimen in for examination two weeks later is sort of interesting......
And they will give you a prescription for some pretty good stuff to help with the pain. All in all, it wasn't a bad weekend :D

I had a friend who did this as a surprise while his wife was out of town. He
drove himself, too.
Let's just say she wasn't really pleased.
I personally think it's a great gift...

Thanks for the feedback even though I didn't ask this question. MRs. BOiler and myself talked about this after Kaylee was born. We just need to make sure we are both happy with just the 2 tricycle motors! (Which we definitely are) and then we just need to schedule a time after seeing all the necessary doctors etc! 2 guys at work have had it done and they both said they were feeling better after about 3 days. Although for one guy his urologist put him up in the stirrups 8O The second co-workers doctor didn't do that to him.
Mine probably won't happen until late summer or some time around then. I need to find a good pause in my race schedule.

And don't forget to make it as a bigger deal than it really is for the weekend
Mr. Airehead and I are having the same discussion. He wants to do it, but
I don't want him to get it done. I know I don't ever want any more kids. (In 32 years I haven't changed my mind about having just one). My fear is if something happened to me , his next wife might want kids.
Is that cockeyed thinking? Should that even be a consideration? Am I being
foolish?
Is the reversal process difficult?

I know someone who did that. ;)
You're being very considerate and thinking of all the possible future changes that might make his vasectomy a bad idea. That's looking out for him and that's great of you to do for him. It is a valid consideration. Banking his sperm now can give him more future options but it costs around 400 to 800 a year to bank sperm and around the same to set him up initially to bank his first loads. Plus some men's sperm freezes and thaws well and some men's don't and can be ruined or need expensive fertilization help to impregnate women.
The reversal is very involved and painful according to a buddy of mine who had a reversal done. They open the entire sack and reattach everything, so lots of cutting and pain after he wakes up. The longer a man is sterilized the less chances of his sperm being any good if he gets a reversal too. Wait too long and the factory is ruined and can't restart again after too much damage to the testis and sperm cords. Your man should thank you for thinking of him and his future. Way to go !!!!!!!!!

not codeine. My doc gave me percocet.
Before I went in I got 1 valium and 1 percocet. I was feeling good. I had no control of my body when I left. My mind was there but body was jelly.

Is the reversal process difficult?Yes! It's very expensive and not guaranteed to work. Insurance doesn't cover any of it. I think it is supposed to be more painful to have it reversed, Keith complained for weeks.
Adoption is always an option. No shortage of adoptees any time soon. I've adopted three so far (ref. shooting blanks).
That is one of the most thoughtful and selfless things I have ever read.
