I am 63 and have had the same problem for about a year, I've tried everything from avoiding coffee in the morning to trying to eat something but nothing works and it's more then aggravating, sometimes along with is diarrhea which just adds to the fun! I wish I knew what causes this as well, my dr. didn't seem too concerned about it.

I am thirteen, and have had this problem for a little more than a year now. Very late at night, say one or two AM, I start to feel the nausea, and it usually goes on until noon. When it first started, I was told it was the stomach flu because I wouldn't be able to make it to school without vomiting. When after a week it didn't stop, I was sent to a specialist who told me it was acid reflex. I was prescribed a medication which didn't help, but made it worse. I saw him again, and then was told it was my seasonal allergies, which I've had problems with for years. My allergies were causing my sinuses to drain at night while I was laying down, and it went into my stomach, causing nausea and the urge to vomit. I've been on Claritin since then, and it seems to help, but it isn't clearing up.

I'm 18 years old and I've had this for about 3 years. Every morning driving to school I would feel miserably sick. I wouldn't throw up but I was always so nauseous that I was tempted to turn around and go back home. I only seem to feel sick when I have to wake up really early (for school or work). If I sleep in till around lunch time, I avoid this sickness for some reason. I recently was in the hospital for Gastroenteritus and I got two bags of IV and some anti-biotics but I am still getting sick in the mornings. Like many other people who commented, I never feel like eating breakfast but when lunch time comes around and I eat, I feel fine. Also, I usually have diarrhea that comes along with this nausea and my stomach ALWAYS growls excessively but I don't feel hungry. I've been taking Imodium pills every morning and they seem to lessen the symptoms. I haven't tried pepcid yet but I am planning on it.

I did not realize soo many people had the same thing. I think I am not a morning person. It started after the birth of my third child. I had a lot of problems with nausea when I was on birth control so I stopped taking it. Nausea went away until after my third child. I have not told my doctor because I was scared to have an endoscopy or some other horrible test. I figured it is not soo bad because it goes away after breakfast. But, if I have somewhere to be I am absolutely miserable. I had to go to court one day and had to leave to go throw up. Almost missed the start of court.I am sick of this interfering with my life. I see the doctor next month I will mention it. Thanks everyone.

My experience with mysterious morning nausea is most likely related to adaptation.

Appetite/sleep history:
In childhood, I did not have "naturally" healthy breakfasts. Just standard shelf/frozen items.
I was severely ADHD and never gained a pound.
By the end of high school I had no appetite for breakfast, but I was also more busy and active.
But, there were plenty times that I would eat breakfast WHEN I wanted it.
At this period in my life, my ADHD had gone dormant and I was up at 7 am and asleep around 1 am.
After high school, I suffered 2 bouts of acute alcoholism and cannibis use (because of manic depression), however my appetite didn't change. And of course I started to gain weight.
But I did remain active with basketball and hiking. I would be up around 8 am and asleep around 2 am.
My last physically intensive job caused me to over-do-it on eating large pasta meals.
Thus insulin sensitivity and borderline HBP.
I ended up facing restricted mobility and thus the weight began to pack on.
Then 5 years ago the morning sickness slowly began to emerge.
My body desired to wake up at 9am and go to sleep around midnight, so this was my natural sleep cycle for 5 years.
When nearing my college graduation, I had renovated my diet for healthiness but I had decided
to shift my sleep cycle from 9am/midnight, to 6am/10pm. ("Aging" typically slowly reduces sleep need)
That was 2007.

My findings:
Since 3 years ago, there has been a few "back-slides" due to becoming ill and I noticed something.
If I ate food within 1-2 hours of going to bed, my morning sickness would be stronger proportionally.
SO..., I can remember at least twice, where my morning sickness has vanished when I go to bed WITHOUT
food, and thus I wake up hungry. When I keep the wake/sleep cycle constant and go to bed slightly hungry.
I have found that my appetite is un-desiring of breakfast, BUT the nausea relates to my eating times.
Fruit ALWAYS has made me queasy. Yet I''ve been slowly adding it to my days for the past month.
Right now, all I've had is some low-sugar fruit blended with weakened orange juice and my nausea has subsided.
(Even though there could be a habituated anxiety effect from previous scholastics.)

For almost 2 years now, I eat JUST oatmeal (drained/rinsed) first. It is something which the body can slowly process
for long-term energy.
Later on in the morning by 9 am, my stomach is ready for a 2nd part of breakfast.
I don't ALWAYS "not have" a little something just before sleep, but I do try to MAKE the "waking up hungry" setup.
If I have dinner before 8 pm and GET INTO bed at 10pm, it's like a conditioning "flag" to my body's system.

While it is endlessly frustrating to see so many people with the same problems, it is also comforting. I'm 20 years old and have had nausea in the mornings off and on for the past 2-3 years. During high school I never ate breakfast because it made me feel like I would throw up. My brothers are the same way as me, can't eat early in the morning. So is my aunt. I have always just attributed these issues to stress and anxiety. My mother, aunt, and great grandmother all suffer from some form of IBS (though this diagnosis is just a cop-out term and no 'treatment' has ever helped them), I assumed I have IBS as well. I cut caffeine and nicotine from my diet, as they seemed to really irritate my stomach more, but to no avail. I still felt cripplingly sick in the mornings if I woke up before 8 or 9 am. Early morning travel is a sure predictor of sickness, and in fact makes me feel worse.
Now I am starting to wonder if it has something to do with stomach acid, lactose intolerance, gluten allergy, and excess mucus... any or all of the above would help explain this. It is definitely exacerbated by anxiousness (even excitement! Visiting friends/family, something I really want to do, does not take away the anxiousness).
No one sees this as a legitimate problem either, which also makes it worse. It is very real, and very frustrating because of how many things it keeps us from doing! It is like bearing a silent burden, being at war with your own body, and not knowing what to do. If anyone else has any more suggestions/ 'cures' PLEASE let us know!!!

I have posted here earlier and since then (April) my doctor has pretty well determined that my problem is Anxiety/Stress. I do not think I stress about going to work or going places but I guess I do. He has had me on Xanax and it has helped very much with the nausea feeling. Also it has helped me shut my brain off at night and I can actually sleep. I have been working on relation techniques and read a lot of Anxiety/Stress books. Talking about it helps a lot too. I always felt sick when I went to school too, and I was nervous then I know. Doctor said thatthe stress/anxiety will aggrevate the IBS symptoms I get, and the IBS symptoms I get aggrevate the Anxiety so I am stuck in a vicious circle. He said some people have sensitive stomachs to stress and this can also produce excess acid in the stomach, causing the diarrhea and acid reflux. I took a prescription acid reducer he gave me as samples and since have run out, have tried to take the OTC ones and they just do not work as well. I go back to see the Dr next week, and hopefully he can just give me a prescription for acid pills. He also prescribed me a nausea med, as I told him I frequently get sick to my stomach about 3 days prior to my period and he agreed that it was hormone related. I have been through a lot, and talking to people who understand helps greatly as others just think your crazy.

Wow, I thought I was all alone myself, I'm 22 and going to college and stuff and I always get it real bad when I wake up in the morning before classes. I'll wake up at 830 all alone at the house and I won't feel particularly terrible except the normal slow and drowsy feelings, then about the time after I eat my breakfast... which admittedly is probably a big part of it, sometimes I'll have Jimmy Deans and stuff and it makes it ten times worse, but I'll get ready to get in the shower and then I'll just be overcome with terrible cramping and nausea and find it difficult to finish BM's when I'm on the toilet, I'll rock back and forth on the toilet and moan and groan and just pray to the good lord to make it all go away. I'll get this cough from deep within that is similar in ways to a smokers cough (I haven't had a cigarette in years, but I remember when I did for a while and got the cough) in that it is uncontrollable and heavy, but it comes from a different place, like one that makes me gag and makes me feel like I need to puke. I had the cough today real bad and my mom asked me why I was coughing so much... I had it real bad today which is why I googled the symptoms. It seems to be way exacerbated by drinking coffee and stuff, at one point I was laying on the floor because I felt like my insides were all f***ed up and I was just waiting for it to go down. I took some big swallows of milk of mag and it seems like it might be going away though. It's a real debilitating thing to deal with.

I know this post is old but maybe my experience will help someone.
I had morning and mid-day nausea for years (I am 37 old female), ever since high school, but my episodes are relatively rare -
maybe once/twice a year (catching me off-guard every time!).
Back in school, when this problem surfaced, my doctor diagnosed me with enlarged pancrease and liver. She said it was due
to poor (high school cafeteria) diet and stress. I didn't do any tests, but Dr. asked me to measure temperature every morning -
and sure enough, I ran low grade fever (like 100.1), which would subside by mid-day. I also experienced weakness,
headaches and general malaise - all worse on days of bad nausea.
Apparently, you can have "an inflammation" going on in your pancrease, which is sort of being dealt with by your immune system,
but any stress (food, early awakening, fatigue) will throw you off.
Treatment: exclude any parasitic infections, and then diet, diet, diet! I had water-based oatmeals for breakfast for a year,
no sugar/salt, very light lunch (like an applesauce, boiled chicken, broth; parboiled veggies), and something like mashed
potatoes for dinner. Definitely nothing fried (made me vomit anyway) or greasy (I found that grilled farm-raised salmon
is way too greasy for me!). I also drank lots of mineral water (my doctor said eat/drink only those foods that make feel OK
before I ate them), mineral neutral water was something that felt good. Eventually, I was able to eat everything sans
fried foods, and feel OK most of the time. I aslo firmly believe that this kind of problem is best addressed by either
a naturopathic doctor or another alternative medicine practioner (though I got my advice from a regular MD, she was a friend).

What about a stomach ulcer? I have had all these symptoms for like a week now and I think it might be a stomach ulcer?

Hey all! I'm 19 and have been having these symptoms since July 8th, 09. I'm amazed and saddened by the amount of us that are having these symptoms. It seriously alters our lives and it's getting to the point that if I have to deal with this every day for the rest of my life, I don't really want to live. Would never kill myself, but I feel like dying every morning :\

To go along with what some of you have said, it's only in the AM, usually gone by noon. A weird symptom I'm having that I didn't see anyone mention, this nausea has been waking me up earlier and earlier and earlier every morning. To be perfectly honest, I'm a fairly lazy person, I'm only working part time at fast food so not much stress there, and all my life I've slept in. If I don't NEED to get up then I'll sleep till 1 pm, if I do need to get up, I won't get up before 11. But since I started getting sick the nausea has actually woken me up every morning, almost like clockwork at 7 am. I'll wake up and lay in bed for a few, see how I'm feeling, my stomach will usually cramp and burn and I get that horrible lump at the top of your throat. After a few mins, at least enough to not throw up on the way, I'll go in the bathroom, have a BM, then get in the bathtub. I'll take my medicine[s] while in the bath, I'm prescribed generics for Zolfran and Prilosec. I'll relax in the bath for about an hour, then get up and I'll usually feel almost normal by then. Actually, the last about week or 2 have been good, I'm still waking up nauseated, but I haven't needed to take the anti nauseal fortunately. It exhausts me beyond belief. But the last few days I've started to feel sick again, and becoming very sensitive to emotions. It's really taking a toll on my relationship with my boyfriend, because I'll just be paranoid all the time. Also noticed I've had less BM's since I started feeling sick again. Not sure if the sickness causes that, or the lack of BM's causes the nausea. I feel really bloated most days, and the nausea is a low burn, is the only way I can describe it.

Before this sickness I wasn't on any prescriptions except my birthcontrol, Implanon, which I had removed yesterday [08/12/09] after having it in for more than a year. I've had multiple tests, including blood work, 3 part cat scan, upper GI, and stool samples. I'm going to guess that everything is negative since they don't ever ever ever contact me with the results. Andd I had a couple of pregnancy tests done, including one blood test, and all were negative too. I also smoke cigarettes and weed so that could be contributing.

/end rant. If any of you have any ideas as to what's going on let me know.

I'm 69 and have morning nausea. I've taken Protonix and it has not helped. I stopped the coffee and that hasn't helped. I use to take Neurontin so I quit that and it hasn't helped. The only thing that helps (for a while) is Benedryl. So, I take Benedryl every 4 hours and I feel fine with the exception of being sleepy.

I have also what I call "morning sickness". I have taken many pregancy tests all negative. It all started 4 months ago. I wake up feeling so hungry that I can't eat. I am going to school to be a nurse and I work in a hospital. I thought it was low blood sugar. But i have had that check out and no problems there. I finally went to the hospital and they found out that i had a bad gallbladder. I had tha removed and I still have the same nausea problems. I get it when I wake up. When I wake up and eat right away, like in 10 minutes, I am usually fine. Usually when i wake up early I dont have it, but when i get good sleep i wake up with it. I can't tell you the last time I was full. I take Zofran everytime I start to feel bad, it just helps take the curb off it. By 4-5pm I feel fine and I am eatting normally. Sometimes before I go to bed i feel the same way and wake up that way. I have also been on prilosec for 4 months and i see no differce. I have just recently been diagnosed with ibs. And even with that meds I still have it. My husband says it is all in my head and sometimes I feel that way. I just want to be done with it all. I guess I should see a GI doc. But many others have also and it doesnt help. Just wondering what it could be?? My doc that did my gallbladder said that I could still have the nausea even with my gallbladder out for ever. So I guess this might be something I have to just live with. At least the Zofran makes it a little livable!
