Hi everybody,

I had my first pap smear with CIN3 and LEEP procedure done about a year ago. On my first checkup after LEEP the smear results were all clear and it seemed like that whole horrible thing is over. Now I’m in the same, if not worse, situation now because my latest pap smear results show CIN3 cells came back. My ob-gyn assured me before LEEP that chances for it to be unsuccessful are almost zero, and here I am, like I haven had procedure done at all.

I have three weeks to wait until I can get the next appointment, but I’m completely crushed by all this. I don’t know if I will have to have LEEP done again, or does this mean I already have cancer so they’ll have to do a hysterectomy. That’s the last thing I want, I’m only 28 years old.

Hello,

even though the success rates for the LEEP procedure are high, there are still cases like you experienced yourself, where the first procedure is not completely successful. The most common reason why this happens is that cells that need to be removed are located inside the cervical canal. So, what I think your ob-gyn will do before deciding on anything radical is a colposcopy and then you might have LEEP procedure repeated, to remove the remaining cells. There is a chance they will take a sample during colposcopy to be biopsied, and I know this is hard to go through, but there are still options available before hysterectomy becomes the only solution. Just make sure you talk to your doctors and ask them if anything from the results to the treatment is left unclear.

Wish you all the best,

Nicole
